Right, even if you only do it on 20% of the snaps, it stops an opponent from being able to come into the week going "OK, here's how we're going to neutralize Jaylon Smith" it's "OK, here's where they line up Jaylon Smith on various plays, how do we account for that?" It goes from being a static element to a dynamic one in their prep.

Very well put.

Good read on Elston's thoughts on his new role as RC. It sounds like he's smashing this.

https://notredame.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1749656

It's refreshing to see the change in approach and the acknowledgment of not putting your best recruiters in the role of coordinator. I think that was hurting us with Alford in that spot. Not that he did bad, but he could have done so much more. Elston looks as though he will do really well in that spot. Thanks for sharing that Lucky!

yankee,

I'm always confused by your signature. Are you telling me to "have a f*&^ day"? Have a "go f&*^ myself day"? Or should I have a fantastic f*$^ing day (with myself)?

Wild speculating [but it's the season for it]:

Jarrett Grace --- starting middle linebacker and defensive playcaller and get-in-your-face defensive team leader. Grace came to ND as THE Ohio HS All-Star linebacker --- loaded with experience at the position. Diaco immediately saw that he had "the instincts", and called him his first "werewolf". "Grace Knows Middlelinebacking." If he stays healthy, he is the Man. And, "coincidentally", everybody else is suddenly crosstraining... yeh, coincidence.

Notre Dame lines up defensively in the fall: on the field are Redfield and the Cal safety, Luke and Russell. Sebastian is calling the deep backfield re-sets. Redfield, Luke, and Russell can just play. Grace and JSmith walk out there as starting linebackers, but is Joe the other? Probably. The pre-Grace commentary about Onwualu vs Martini may be a thing of the past, or it may be Onwualu and Schmidt. Nyles and Grier probably wait in the wings. ... as would, perhaps, Matthias. On the DLine, out comes Sheldon and Isaac, but does Trumbetti beat out Okwara, and, mindbogglingly, Hayes, Tillery, or Cage beat out Jones? I say Jarron gets a little afraid and ups his efforts and starts, and Andrew and Romeo split time. Grace calls the plays. Sebastian makes the late adjustments deep. The other guys relax and go instinctive animalistic.

We roll. With good luck regarding no DBack injuries and Grace standing tall, we roll all season.

Now, come on, Malik and Everett --- get YOUR unit rolling! You've got studs at every position.

Ha, a buddy of mine said that to my boss one day as he was being really obnoxious. It just kind of stuck with me as a nice motto for anybody that wants to be combative with me. In general I would rather everybody have a fantastic day, but if necessary the other option is always available ;)

By the way I am excited about Malik taking off his red jersey and going full go. I think Golson should do this as well. It would really show who can run the option and throw under pressure.

I doubt Golson didn't also have to take his red off, they probably just didn't show any footage of it (because they hardly show any footage at all this year). Making the quarterback "full go" is a coach's call and I can't think of any reason why Kelly/Sanford would have one QB go live in a QB competition and not the others.

Yea, I thought that was a little misleading how they stated that. Until I hear otherwise, I definitely think it was a coach decision, not Malik's.

25 seconds of relevant video, with "relevant" being a generous description, and of course the valued judgement of Jac Collinsworth that ND has the best coaching staff in the country.

You're too kind, ND.

Another short and non-informative video. Add that to no Power Hour on ISD, pretty disappointing Monday.

Yea, I'm not saying that we've been able to take a lot from these videos in the past but they were at least fun to watch. This stuff is just terrible and almost pointless to make. I'm assuming that its the football program that has asked to cut down on the amount of footage they put out.

I had heard that it's the fact that most of the Notre Dame FIDM resources are currently dedicated to basketball on their tourney run.

Agreed. This has been a very poor year, content wise. I don't mind having Collinsworth this year but let's actually see some footage. Show me drills if you must but let me see something! We used to get 2-3 mins and I thought that was short lived but now we get 30ish seconds? I hope they are planning to release some major cuts later in the year.

There was commentary rather long ago that Kelly was unhappy with how much coverage ND practices had and was cutting the viewing time way back. This paucity of video just seems to me to be congruent with that attitude.

So I'm a novice on this topic but what I don't get is, what resources do they need just to make a longer video. The camera guy is there, they have someone editing footage, Jac doing commentary. I guess I'm confused on why they are able to make a 1:30 min. Video but not a 3:30 min video? Just tape more action, right?

Hah!! IrishYJ, you are being inflicted with the vocabulary of a prehistoric mind which studied the physical sciences but also 18th and 19th century intellectual history. THAT cost me many neural cell die-offs plus most of my friends.

Terminal damages to linguistic storage in Wernicke's area is irreparable and causes sudden outbreaks of unintelligible gibberish --- unless you're an Englishman who somehow has kept breathing for two centuries, or resides in the basements of old libraries.

.... to put it another way, sorry for the thread distractions.

Mike, you are one of the few people I've come across on the internet that I'd thoroughly enjoy knowing in real life. It's rare to find someone so well-read and interested in open, honest discussion.

I've lost many friends as well.

flattered.

But our "table" at the IE pre-game BBQ would be small. Whiskey would probably come over and sit with us.

Whoops --- almost forgot Bogs and BGIF --- don't want them mad at me.

I'm not sure if you're being humble or not, but most on here would be thrilled to grab a beer with you. You're definitely one of the best on the site for your offensive line knowledge alone.

OMM, have you thought about a "Word of The Day" thread? :)

Try this:

A.Word.A.Day Home Page : Word of the day, vocabulary, wordpower, words, language, quote, quotes, quotation, quotations, english, dictionary, lexicon, logophile, wordsmith, vocabulaire, vocabulario

Were I more savvy and adept at the ways and wonders of the net I'd start a new thread in the hope of padding my vBank balance.

Quite some years ago my younger sister (RIP) "gave" me a gift subscription. It's been a part of my morning routine (get the coffee started, shower, check e-mail, etc.) ever since.

If you enjoy such things you should try this:

https://www.duolingo.com/

It's completely free and honestly works really well. I've been learning Spanish and lessons take roughly five minutes a day and are pretty fun. I might start a thread on it where we can all keep track of our learning if anyone's interested in learning a language with me/others.

Edit: I'm making the thread. If no one's interested it will die.

Merci, grey. I'll go with French as a start.

I'll also look for your thread to continue with this.
