Loved Josh Adams tape and think he would have been a top 150 player without injury. His size, speed, and agility for his size are extremely impressive. If he can bulk up a little bit and not run to upright I think him and Dex could be a hell of a combination.

There is not a true "break" in the first seven games aside from UMass.

Notre Dame is favored and should win them all, but it's not going to be as simple as FPI makes it seem.

Texas is a Charlie Strong defense. They are thin and bad on offense, but this is not a breeze-through game either (though I hope it turns out to be).

Virginia scares me because it's a classic mediocre opponent that's got a few 5-star guys here and there that could put it together and get up for their game against mighty ND.

Georgia Tech is Navy on steroids. That's frightening.

UMass is a glorified bye, which is nice.

Clemson is a good football team, but a bit young and unproven in places. They could be very good, or they could still be struggling to get their feet under them in week 5. However, the timing of this game is where the biggest difficulty comes from.

Navy is Navy, AND you have to play them after a night game at Clemson? We should beat them down like we did in '11 and '12, but the memories of '13 and '14 haunt me. Plus, it's the perfect "trap" setup between Clemson and USC.

USC after Navy? The most difficult game on the schedule just got even more difficult lol.

Impossible to manage? No. But I stand by my "brutal" descriptor, especially when considering the Clemson-Navy-USC stretch of games.

I'm not saying any game will be easy. But "brutal" it isn't.....

Since CJ is out with a hip flexor, they're trying to limit Folston's reps. Also, it's good to get the fresmen the reps since one of them will probably be the third RB.

I wish I had the energy to go back and quote everyone that dogged Adams in his thread. It was widely believed that he was overrated and not even in the same league as Dexter.

But here we are...

So today's presser made it sound like KVR will be full-time nickel, with Butler moving to his spot on the outside when KVR shifts inside, unless I misunderstood and this is more of a special-package thing.

All sorts of surprises there:

1. Sounds like Crawford really put himself in position to be the #1 nickel
2. Butler needed to improve massively, and it looks like that might be the case
3. Perhaps the staff was elevating Coleman not only because of his abilities in man coverage, but also as a motivating factor aimed at Butler and Watkins.
4. Where you at, Watkins?

I'm fairly certain I was one of them so I offer my head before thy guillotine. I thought Adams was going to be a 3rd year back but he looks much faster than I expected. I thought Dex would come in and lock the position down for 3rd reps.

I'm happy to be wrong.

As of now I'll have a tea spoon of crow on this one. I never said he was overrated (he wasn't rated that high) but I didn't see a natural RB. FWIW, from the short clips of practice I still think Dexter looks better running the football. As of now it wouldn't surprise me if Adams has just picked up the offense faster as he seems like a very sharp kid. More to go here.

Catching up here and was literally about to write 'where the hell is Watkins?'. Good call. I like KVR in the nickel, he's our most physical corner and will lay some hits. But very disappointed that Watkings didn't take over the 3rd corner spot. I personally am not a fan of Butler as a corner.

I think some of us are reading way too much into Josh getting reps. Not saying he isn't going to be good, but he hasn't even played a game yet, and it's not like he has taken anyone's spot.

He's definitely better suited to be a corner in a zone scheme like Diaco's, but I also don't think he's as big of a liability as some think. He's a junior, so he's still a work in progress that has some time to work with, and some improvement in his technique could help make up for his lack of speed/burst in man coverage.

He gave up some big plays last season, but he's also flashed some skills that could still be very useful to ND's defense as a cornerback.

I know a couple guys that played against him in Hs and they all said that Josh was there entire team and they struggled when he wasn't in. He was bigger and faster than everyone he played against.

I've seen a few reporters comment that he runs low and it surprised them. The opposite of GAIII was the comparison.

I really liked Adams as well and enjoyed following his senior year. Rooting for him big time.

Nothing can come close to the wave of emotion during the final 5 minutes of the Bush Push game.

I was sitting in our "blue hair" section, and even the people with oxygen tanks were standing up and screaming during the end of that game!

O'Malley quoting BK on Devin Butler: "If we were handicapping our corners, we would not have thought that he'd be our third corner. He's had a really, really good camp. Plays with so much more confidence, speed. He's a different player than we saw last year."

Russell to play nickel and Farley in certain situations

Very excited for Butler. As long as we can keep a safety babysitting him over the top, I am confident in him on the outside when we go Nickel. We should be able to do with that Redfield and still be able to bring blitzers on 3rd down if need be. Luke/Russell shouldn't need any help in coverage at this point.

^and obviously if we're in zone then none of that should apply and we'll be good to go with Butler on the outside anyway.

A couple things.

1. Folston is getting reps. Remember the media only saw 5 full practices. However, it's crucial to keep him fresh for the actual season. He is the only back with actual carries at RB and he has a solid grasp of the offense. ND needs to get the younger guys reps whenever they can.

2. I am not sure what else you want Watkins to do. He has a good camp. But he isn't all of sudden going to break into the starting lineup with Russell and Luke there. Butler has played for 2 season and has a ton of experience. Watkins is a sophomore. He is doing about as expected. He isn't a nickel.

3. Farley is still going to be the nickel back. Russell is going to play in the nickel. Notre Dame has depth for the first-time in years in the secondary, so you can plug in different guys in different situations.

Teams are forced into playing nickel almost as a base defense. Russell isn't going to spend that time in the nickel. In 3rd and long, you will see him slide inside, so Farley can come off the field, but everywhere else, Farley will be in there, because he is good vs the run.

TP, overall, what are you hearing about BVG's defense? Anything you care to share?

  1. I think Josh Adams will push for reps.
  2. I think we are in a good position at running back, especially with the power we have coming in this next year with Tony.
  3. I think that every member of the defensive backfield will be a massive improvement over last year. Someone really shined a Lyght on them . . .
  4. I think of all things having a receiver-eating defensive backfield is the fuel and motor that makes BVG's defense go. (Last year the d-line was talked about and KeiVarae was mentioned as an aside. But I think having few competent, healthy secondary defenders really killed the defense last year, not the injuries, or anything BVG did.)

I know its early, but I wonder what's in the cards for Lyght if our defensive backfield has a huge year. I don't expect him to leave any time soon, but I'd be interested in hearing where he sees himself in 5 years. Autry is likely a career RB coach with the potential to develop into a stud recruiter. I could see Lyght doing a host of different things including returning to the NFL, training to become a D-coordinator (not for us but maybe a smaller D1 school), or even trying to become a HC somewhere down the line. I think the sky is the limit for him.

Mike Frank has raved about Lyght since his first practice and interview. He definitely sees him as a future HC.

247: Must-Know Details From Brian Kelly Press Conference

Irish head coach Brian Kelly dropped some personnel notes—including a coaching move—into Friday’s press conference with other noteworthy items. Here’s a rundown of the most important points Kelly made in the final practice of fall camp.

Sanford upstairs; Denbrock on the field

Kelly still hasn’t decided who will call the plays – the candidates include himself, associate head coach Mike Denbrock and offensive coordinator Mike Sanford. But he does know where the coaches will be positioned on game day, and Kelly revealed the newest hire will be upstairs while Denbrock mans the sideline.

New look in nickel package

Losing Shaun Crawford for the season is a blow to the secondary, especially when you consider the true freshman was in line to start against Texas in the nickel package. Now that he’s out with a torn ACL look for senior KeiVarae Russell—the team’s best corner in man-to-man coverage—to take Crawford’s place inside in the nickel package. Russell spent some time in the nickel package with Matthias Farley and Crawford at the start of fall camp. Kelly also revealed junior Devin Butler has established himself as the team’s No. 3 cornerback behind Russell and Cole Luke, and he’ll play when Russell slides in to cover the slot receiver.

Jones, St. Brown will contribute

It became clear earlier this week that freshmen Equanimeous St. Brown and Aliz’e Jones will contribute this fall at wide receiver and tight end. But both played with the second-team offense on Friday and showed why Kelly expects both to contribute instantly.

Kelly called both players extremely gifted athletes and said the 6-foot-5, 240 pounds Jones is a “matchup nightmare.” [link url=" http://notredame.247sports.com/Bolt/Kelly-Jones-and-St-Brown-Will-Be-Tough-To-Keep-Off-The-Field-38872215"]You can read more on that here.[/link]

Kizer settling into No. 2 role

If Kelly had to release a depth chart today, sophomore DeShone Kizer would be his second-string quarterback. Kizer’s looked more comfortable in the offense and looks to have won the competition going on behind Malik Zaire against true freshman Brandon Wimbush.

Team sees live special teams action

Kelly had the Irish go through live special teams action at Friday’s practice. It’s the first time Kelly’s done so with one of his teams since he coached at Grand Valley State. (Kelly left Grand Valley State in 2003.) Either C.J. Sanders or Will Fuller will return punts for the Irish, while it looks like C.J. Prosise—who was back at practice after missing 10 days with a hip flexor injury—is pushing Amir Carlisle as kick returner.

Three tight end set?

Notre Dame's deep at the tight end position, and all four tight ends could see the field at different times. Three could also see the field at the same time, with Kelly noting Friday that the Irish could use three tight end sets this fall with Jones flexed out wide. Chase Hounshell and Tyler Luatua will be used largely as blockers, while Durham Smythe, Nic Weishar and Jones will be threats in the passing game.

Hunter Jr. needs touches

Torii Hunter Jr. might not see all of his playing time at slot receiver. Kelly said the team’s most versatile receiver needs touches, and the coaching staff plans to move the junior around in order to put the ball in his hands. It’s possible he could carry the ball in jet sweep packages like Prosise did in 2014.

No clarity on Bryant's future at Notre Dame

Kelly was asked Friday if he thinks the door has closed on suspended running back Greg Bryant's Notre Dame career. The Irish head coach, who said a day after Bryant's enrolled at ASA Miami junior college that he hadn't spoken to the running back, didn't sound optimistic about the junior's future.

"I think the last we heard that he was thinking about another school," Kelly said. "We get different reports each day."

I only go to one game a year and that was my 2013 game. The most fun I've ever had in a stadium.

RE: Pitt game; after being very respectful throughout the whole game with a few sarcastic taunts to a group of dbags a few rows behind me, I got cussed out of Heinz by a ten year old and his father. I'm very lucky my buddy was just strong enough to pull me down the stairs into the concourse after starting a couple stairs up to speak my mind to afforementioned dbags, or I could have ended up in a world of hurt and/or trouble that night.
