ND is evaluating WR Lawrence Cager per Wiltfong.

Cager is the hot prospect across the country. Tore up camps all spring and summer. Camped at Virginia Tech, Kentucky, Alabama and Tennessee and was offered by all of them. Canping at OSU next and they would be the favorite if offered. ND would be a player if we moved on him.

Just to add Wiltfong calling him borderline elite after his spring and summer. Thats some pretty high praise.

The US Army All American game has 83 commitments to date:

4 from Notre Dame: Fertitta, Hoge, Tillery and Barajas

That is tied for the most with Tennessee, USC, and Oregon

The entire Big 10 has 3 (OSU 2, PSU 1) and the entire Big 12 has 2 (WVU w/ both)

Found that interesting.

So the SEC has the other 74?

Saw that Aca'cedric Ware is announcing today and has us a finalist. Considering he hasn't been mentioned in the recent Intels or anything, I'm assuming we're just a hat on the table. Anyone know about his recruitment at all?

Par for the course these days, he is announcing his commitment with full intention of taking visits later. At this point we are expecting a visit.

247 is down for maintenance but it seems like USC if you read this exchange

Tj regarding the current state of DE recruiting for ND.

First, from the incoming class, all of Williams, Blankenship, Trumbetti and Bonner have a real shot at being good to very good DEs at ND in our schemes. It's possible Hill also could factor into the pass-rushing portion of the DE equation, too. Staff is very high on this group -- that's all I can say there.

Second, let this season play out and let's see what BVG and staff can generate defensively in terms of aggressiveness, energy, enthusiasm and sound play, where guys are more free to make plays and "get after it" and exhibit a style that recruits and kids much prefer. Results will matter, of course, but style and image of play likely will matter more for kids who often make emotional and stylistic decisions. Nowhere defensively is that more of a possibility (to impress and demonstrate need) than at DE, perhaps along with DB.

Also from TJ,

I thought I was being realistic....

Anyway, the effects of the BVG hire from the NFL, etc, and his schemes and style of play and coaching demeanor -- especially for DEs (and DL generally, plus DBs) -- can't really be "seen" until they actually are seen....this fall, on the field.

The rebuttal to negative recruiting in this regard -- to the "boring, restrictive 3-4..." defense -- comes from the cliched "proof is in the pudding" and the product on display. Let's see what happens.

To that point, how worried should we be, scale of 1-10, of a Tenuta 2.0?

Will you elaborate a little more?

I do think the defense will be more fun to watch and there will be times it clicks and recruits take notice. However, I also think there will some rather significant growing pains. Whether those result in losses will depend on the offense, IMO. To your question I think the overall performance will be better because BVG has a pretty solid foundation to pull from during trying times and he has BK to manage the situation. For Tenuta when things went south there was no HC to help because Weis had no idea. Also we have more talent on D.

IMO... very legit question. Blitzing for the sake of blitzing is suicide. And it's tough to pick up complex blitz packages in the amount of time this team has to learn them.

I give BVG's defense a 20% chance of disaster. I'll believe this new exciting aggressive defense when I see it. The only thing that is encouraging to me is that I think our secondary (IF THEY STAY HEALTHY) is good enoughto not get torched.

I have always worried about this. I have told people who have asked that we are going to give up more points but we are also going to create more turnovers and have more sacks. This team is going to be rely heavily on the offense.

The key to our offense clicking consistently and scoring more touchdowns and not settling for field goals every trip down the field is to get the other team's offense off the field. The VanGorder defense may give up more points than the Diaco defense, but there will be fewer sustained drives by the opposing team, drives that eat up the clock and keep our offense off the field for extended periods of time. With VanGorder's defense we are likely to give up a few big plays now and then, but we can also expect to see our opponents turn the ball over, punt from their own end of the field, etc. We could end up with five to six more possessions per game, and you can't score if you don't have the ball. With our offensive depth we ought to be able to play fast while rotating players in and out to keep everyone fresh.

More possessions + Better field position = More points

VanGorder's aggressive defense can get us more possessions and better field position.

Wonder what the breakout is between kids we offered that were already committed, and uncommitted kids we offered that chose to go somewhere else. Also wonder how many offers we made last year at this time compared to this year. I'll assume BVG's lack of uber selective behavior = more offers.

Relative numbers update from TJ

Assuming the numbers and desirable options get us to a class of 23-25, a reasonable allocation of remaining spots likely would allow us to take three more on offense: a RB, a WR or APB type, and a "best available" offensive skill athlete.

Defensively, the current plan is: at least 1 DE, 1-2 LBs, and 1-3 "best available" for DB, DL or LB, pretty much in that order.

Surprised Lovette couldn't find room.

Per TJ. This is mostly about Guyton but has a mention of Humphrey that answers your question.

The staff are big fans of Guyton and his game, too! They wanted him early, and obviously they got him.

I pretty much agree with the excellent assessment from PreTill, to be honest. JG may not wow with any single element of his overall skill set and talent, or even profile, but he's good to really good at just about every part that makes up a complete WR. I think the part I like best is his natural and crafted ability (takes both) to gain separation from DBs -- whether pre-catch, in-phase or post-catch -- and the resulting knack for YAC.

I think he's fairly comparable in quite a few ways to a TJ Jones and a Corey Holmes, if one needed a comparison.

As for "big time speed WRs," we have CJ Sanders at Slot/Z already, which was crucial, and still have a shot at a couple others, whether they're more the WR type a la John Humphrey (must survive his upcoming OU visit) or the APB type.

Awesome info. Thanks for that.

I've been thinking about this too. It's become fashionable to bash Diaco on this board because of recruiting, but I think it's hard to argue with the yard/scoring stats his defenses put up. Playing more aggressively sounds great, but be careful what you wish for.

The best example: the fact that we survived the second half against USC last year, which is definitely one of the most amazing/miraculous things I've seen as a football fan. I was practically hyperventilating by the time the game ended. Diaco deserves all the credit in the world for holding USC off for that whole time, with the way the offense was playing.

Tuitt was amazing that game. Literally took it over in the second half. USC was putrid on offense...mainly due to the qb.
