The Irish getting a game from Virginia doesn't look weird anymore.

Living in the Northeast, you probably don't see as much "hate" as others do. I can tell you that the hate is strong down South. Saying it does not exist is just plain funny. Hell, if coaches comments about joining a conference lately isn't an indicator, I don't know what is. I get bashed daily at the office for being Irish. Yes I'm a huge fan, but I'm not a blind homer. I'm even a part time Tennessee fan, so you can't say I blindly hate the SEC.

And yes, we are different. We have a unique fan base, our own TV contract, and try to carry ourselves on another level academically. Some folks just don't like that. And that's OK. It's not a bad thing IMO to be hated for those reasons. It does suck however when AP voters and coaches ding us for that hatred/dislike. The USC fan/writer is a great example.

...I like to see that. Really glad this team continues to persevere. It has even looked dominant, despite key injuries. However, my preference would be to quietly go about getting it done w/o the expectations.

I don't think we should be viewed as one of the 4 best teams until we prove we can beat a 2-dimensional team.

We murdered Texas because their passing game was anemic (and OL was garbage).

We butchered GaTech because we were dialed in to prevent the run (but they started passing and had a lot of success in under a minute).

Let's see what we can do to UMass and see if we can handle Clemson. Then I'll tentatively start believing but even after Clemson, USC and Stanford will be difficult tests. And that says nothing of Temple, Pitt & BC who are all going give us their best shot.

Excited for the team galvanizing against GTech but I need to see it each week, not every other.

Except Brady didn't do anything. That's why the allegations that I'll blindly defend ESPN are so misguided. I've openly criticized them for the way they handled the deflategate situation to the point that I was personally embarrassed by the company's reporting on the issue.

There's a big difference between identifying individual cases of bias or poor journalism and the belief that everyone is out to get you always. I believe you're the one who pointed out that some joker USC voter had us ranked #13. Several people pointed out that it's pretty outrageous that Auburn is still ranked. Those are perfectly reasonable arguments and are much different than "OMG SEC BIAS NODER DAME SHOULD BE NUMBAAR ONEE 4 EVAAAAARRRR!!1!!!1!!! #FSECSPN #HERBIELOVESTHACHODE"

Remaining SOS doesn't matter for FPI, but does matter for expected final record. FPI is a measure of how we'd be expected to perform against an average team on a neutral field. The reason our win out percentage is higher than than some teams ranked ahead of us in FPI is because those teams have stronger opponents remaining, especially those likely to play in a conference championship game. Another "unbiased" ranking is the Colley Matrix.

ETA: I know preseason FPI includes things like head coach's tenure, returning starters, and recruiting rankings. I'm not sure if or how those metrics are used once the season gets going. I think it's safe to assume that the in-season model includes injuries, which would be holding us down below our efficiency.

ESPN acknowledges that it's not perfect, which is why they don't use it exclusively in their Playoff Predictor.

Each week throughout the season, the Playoff Predictor will use ESPN's Football Power Index (FPI) and human logic (i.e., the eye test) to determine which teams are still alive in the chase for the College Football Playoff.

So, FPI has us at 9 but we're 4 in the Playoff Predictor. Meaning the model actually underrates us and the analysts (i.e. the actual people at ESPN) overrate us.

Is the reason GT is rated 58 now solely because of their FCS wins and their ND loss?

In other words, if they garner some quality ACC wins, could they move up in numeric rating rapidly?

And if that is true, would it positively affect the Irish?

PS. : PI, I think that a P5 school should be punished for a FCS loss, like made ineligible for the playoff!
