2014 Spring Practice Thread

So outside of Hegratty and Hanratty (who I believe have another year because of RS?), every presumed starter from Saturday's spring game besides Koyac is scheduled to be back for 2015 (and I'm not even sure Hegratty/Hanratty are both starters).

That's pretty crazy considering how loaded this offense is with athletes.

Quick, top of my head guess at the defense without going down the list, I'm seeing KVR, Day, and Ishaq being the only starters leaving, and Day and KVR can definately come back.

Wow.

I've sort of forgotten about Onwaulu's position switch as I haven't followed spring practice as closely as in the past. He's mentioned briefly in the article above, but what are we hearing about his move to LB? Should we expect him to see significant PT on defense in the fall or will he need more time to acclimate to the position and work through the depth chart?

it was noted in a presser i believe but there was mention of him playing against spread teams and in sub packages....he certainly won't be an every down player which i know you know, but kelly had high praise for his efforts/transition thus far

I have a new rule.

You're allowed to look forward to the season that is one year less than earliest class of 'profiles' IE has listed for recruits. Since we've made '2016 class profiles', I can look at 2015 season.

Some interesting comments from Kelly after BG game.

BK: (Senior linebacker) Joe Schmidt is a leader on our defense. There's no one probably that has the kind of leadership and understanding of our defense than Joe has right now. Right now he can't come off the field. His knowledge base in terms of getting people lined up and having them execute what we do defensively, he's absolutely integral to what we're doing.

You know, we'll obviously have to do a lot defensively. Joe is not 255 pounds, and if the game is a downhill iso game, we're going to have to be cognizant of what his shortcomings are. But right now, as a communicator, as a leader on our defense, he's emerged in the spring.

So it would be him, Max Redfield has had a really good back end of the spring. And I say the back end, probably the last 6-7 practices, has really stepped his game up and his knowledge of what we're doing has been really good.

I think we found a role for (junior lineman) Romeo (Okwara), one that I think we feel a lot more comfortable where he is. He's got to do a good job of taking care of his body and keeping up the weight up and doing those things.

-Kelly is aware that Schmidt's size could potentially be a problem.

BK: I think I commented on this the last time I talked, and I think that that is a situation where we are not going to sort that out until camp.

We are going to give the left guard position an opportunity to be competed by (senior Conor) Hanratty, (senior Matt) Hegarty are going to get a chance to compete in that left guard position, because (senior) Nick Martin is going to come back and be our center, and he's been out, right.

So Hegarty has to take that position at center, but we don't believe he's our starter. We believe Nick Martin is. But he's had a really good spring. We want to give him a chance to compete at left guard. So if that's the case, are we better with him at left guard and (sophomore Steve) Elmer at right tackle or better with McGlinchey at right tackle and Elmer at left guard? If you want to boil it down, who's the left guard with Elmer at right tackle or Elmer at left guard and McGlinchey at right tackle? So that's going to kind of sort itself out in preseason camp.
- This is basically what I stated last week about the Oline battle.

It really seems like the initial belief that Schmidt was a "placeholder" for Morgan was unfounded. I would be surprised if by fall Joe slipped into a limited role. He plays bigger than he is and they have allowed him to take a leadership role on the field (much bigger deal than just in the locker room). I don't see a freshman coming in the fall and being able to catch up in that respect.

Maybe his size will become an issue in the future and let a guy like Morgan slowly chip away at his playing time. But if the season started today, I don't think there is any doubt that Joe would be our starting MLB.

Regardless of how it turns out. I find that remarkeable. He should be extremely proud of what he's accomplished.

Yeah, I think like Kelly said, unless the opponent wants to run ISO plays at him or something like that, Schmidt's too important as a communicator to take off the field.

Kelly has said previously (and Schmidt showed us last year in games like USC) that his speed of recognition more than makes up for any slowness of foot. So I think Schmidt will play lots of passing downs and standard downs and even rushing downs, unless the opponent forces us to fill that spot with a bigger body by running straight at him.

But I agree with Wooly, hats off to Schmidt for busting his ass and beating out more athletic guys.

Remind anyone of a certain QB whose eligibility recently expired? Regardless, congrats to Joe for earning the schollie and making the team better with your dedication.

That front-butt has a decided schematic advantage over that belt.

Sorry, I'll go say 3 Hail Marys now.

Totally worth the penance ;)

No need to apologize dude. Only thing Charlie Weis had a schematic advantage of was which donuts from Dunkin Donuts were the best.

I think his belt executed the bend but don't break approach to perfection. It was one of the greatest performances in ND history but you just don't hear people talk about it that much. It's a shame.

Core of Irish defense beginning to emerge | Inside the Irish
Making an impact during a spring game is always a good thing. But sometimes, the not making one is a good thing, too.

Saturday, Irish fans were excited to see how the pieces of Brian VanGorder’s defense are coming together. How would Sheldon Day look playing defensive tackle? Would KeiVarae Russell follow up a great spring with a big Blue-Gold game? How would Max Redfield look at safety?

None of those questions were provided answers on Saturday. And that was perfectly fine with Brian Kelly, who kept some of his best defenders off the field.

“Sheldon Day played a cameo role today. Jaylon Smith, Max Redfield, a lot of those guys got in and got out early,” Kelly said after the game. “So we feel like we’ve identified some of our really legitimate playmakers and then we’ve identified some individuals that will really play roles for us.”

Even in our brief look at Smith, he was incredibly productive. But the fact that Day got in and out of the game without injury was enough for Kelly, as the head coach identified him as the team’s best “on the ball defender” after the game, certainly not new news for those following along.

That Redfield was classified in this group has to be a positive sign for the young safety. After all but being forced into the starting lineup for the Pinstripe Bowl by Kelly, Redfield has taken the step forward this spring that his head coach demanded, looking more and more like a piece of the bedrock that this group desperately needs.

“Max Redfield has had a really good back end of the spring,” Kelly said. “Probably the last seven practices, he has really stepped his game up and his knowledge of what we’re doing has been really good.”

That wasn’t necessarily the case last season, with Redfield stuck behind veterans Matthias Farley and Austin Collinsworth on the depth chart. But Farley has shifted outside, playing nickel back and corner on Saturday. And while Collinsworth had been singled out as one of the defenders that quickly picked up VanGorder’s new scheme, the fifth-year safety was on the field quite a bit Saturday, leading the team in tackles but also getting beat for a touchdown by C.J. Prosise.

After finishing last season strong, it’s clear that Collinsworth has a role in this defense. But safety Elijah Shumate made a few big plays on Saturday and Eilar Hardy played some productive football last season as well. With the addition of Cody Riggs in June, that’s another defender who will spend a lot of time on the field, creating a very good problem for VanGorder and secondary coach Kerry Cooks.

It’s all part of a new look defense that will be handled differently than Bob Diaco’s. And while the Irish will certainly miss a core group of defenders that played a lot of snaps, the roster’s depth will allow this defense to be optimized by its personnel.

“I think what Brian has done is he has found players that maybe have not played a lot of football for us, that can have roles in assisting and helping our defense,” Kelly said. “And I think that that’s what his experience brings. Here is somebody with a lot of experience that can take an individual and say, all right, here is where he can help us.

“So I think that that’s what the spring has allowed us from a personnel standpoint defensively to do. And secondly, we’ve added a scheme that certainly has some more pieces to it that we didn’t have in the past.”

After 15 practices building the foundation, the core of the defense is starting to emerge. Sheldon Day will lead the defensive line. Jaylon Smith will anchor the linebackers. KeiVarae Russell and Max Redfield will headline a very deep secondary.

Different, for certain.

And while the strength of this unit won’t be in the trenches, we’ll see in the fall if the enhanced athleticism can carry the day.

Doug Randolph is a big ass dude

He definitely looks the part. Also, I love watching Shumate play football. His aggressiveness will put him in some poor positions at times but its fun to watch him fly around and hit people.

In an ideal world, he steps up and starts opposite Redfield.

Also, Russell has such awesome energy and enthusiasm. Hoping he takes a leadership role in our secondary.

I know this was discussed a lot prior to spring practice but who do you guys think the captains are going to be this year? I'd love to see KVR get one of the Cs, not sure about anyone else though.
