Couldn't we take 28 and have 4 EE's, 4 count against last class and 24 this class? Didn't Weis do this in 2006?

Unless we go over 85, we haven't over signed.

We could do this, yes, but I don't think we'll even have the space for that amount.

We'll have 59 official scholarship players back after the 2013-14 season. If Golson does come back, and currently things are pointing that he will, we'll be at 60. Currently, right there, that only leaves 25 open spots for the 2014 class.

We have 9 senior's who have an extra year of eligibility (Hendrix, Massa, Welch, Lombard, Heggie, Utupo, Moore, Collinsworth, and Lo Wood). Out of those nine mentioned, probably 2-5 will be brought back. The only one right now I can say for sure that will come back, assuming he and the staff both want that, is Lombard.

Lombard + 60 originally on scholarship, and that'll leave about 24 available schoalrships. This number can go up and/or down depending on many variables. But for now, that's the max number. Meaning currently, 9 more available scholarships for 2014.

IMO, there are 9 spots that ND will take, and I think they will be distributed so:

RB: (1) - Dante Thomas-Williams
WR: (2) - Michiah Quick, Isaiah McKenzie
TE: (1) - Dalton Schultz/Tyler Luatua
DL: (1) - Thomas Holley/Matt Elam
LB: (1) - Dillon Bates
CB: (2) - Nick Watkins, Darius West
ATH: (1) - JuJu Smith

Robbing Tennessee and UK for elite recruits. I don't think the commitment from West (UK) and Bates (UT) last. They will most likely look at ND after mediocre seasons from their respective commitments. To say that ND is far ahead of UT and UK is a major understatement. They flip to the Irish.

What's with Luatua? His summer camp campaign was a huge flop. He was, essentially, a no show at the Opening. Where's his motivation to play tight end? Weischar will make a better tight end receiver than Luatua.

not sure...he kind of reminds me of a jarron jones situation...maybe the kid is just bored right now and just really enjoys the games more than the work necessary outside of the game (practice, lifting, conditioning, etc.) to get better.

sure every program and class has those types of kids...ones that we would die to have their size and ability.

or maybe he's just a soft spoken kid who likes to go about his business without much attention

Basically, Luatua plays rush/press defensive end for his high school, not middle linebacker. Unlike Yeargin, he has shown no coverage skills at the camps. Tom Lemming of Maxpreps is keen on Luatua, and Tom has stated that Tyler would prefer to play tight end in college.

He is a bit light for that at the moment but nothing we haven't already covered in the Tranquill thread. I have a fellow church member that is a coach at his high school, and he does not seem to think he flips anywhere. I'll follow this one closely, but he is a legacy at UT and I believe he stays there with the momentum they have on the trail.

I think the "Luatua is not motivated" talk is overblown. Didn't this start by one person saying he looked disinterested at the Rivals Challenge? Has anyone outside of this one person said this about him? This could be a situation of that person not accurately interpreting what he saw or maybe he took off one play and all of a sudden he's disinterested and not a motivated player. I'm not saying it can't be true, but I'm also not taking this snippet as gospel on Luatua. If it was widely reported, then I'm wrong, but I think this is a situation of one person not being impressed and that word spreading on this board.

My understanding re: The Opening is that he had a prior commitment and could not make it. From all accounts he was very impressive during the 7v7 circuit in the spring. With that said, I've always thought he was overrated as the #1 TE. He's very talented and worthy of his 4-star status, but nothing jumps out at me that separates him from the group of top TEs.

Uh, our coaches put plenty of stock into camp settings. Certain ones more than others, but they like seeing what guys can do against other elite talent in camp settings.

I don't think they would necessarily disagree, let alone strongly. IIRC there is/was disagreement among staff members about who should have been the top target. Some thought Weishar should have been. Additionally, they will play two very different TE positions and I think it is completely fair to suggest that the Flex TE target will be a better receiving threat.

Here's his highlights. TJ has some good things to say about him. We're still evaluating but I like his highlights. His body needs to work but what potential NG at this age doesn't.

Uh, our coaches put plenty of stock into camp settings. Certain ones more than others, but they like seeing what guys can do against other elite talent in camp settings.

TJ has noted many times the staff pays little attention to these camps. What they prefer is to get a kid on campus where they can size him up and work him out. That's how they landed Bonner. They were so impressed with his workout on campus they offered. Same with Izzy. The fact that Luatua supposedly had poor camps means nothing to them. They still consider him the best TE in the class.

I like the idea of bringing in two NT's this cycle. Never made a profile so I'll leave that to the experts but here's some info on him. Can bench 395 and is currently 6-4 325. Doesn't care what position he plays. UW is making him a major priority and right now it seems like a UW/UCLA battle. Lupoi is said to be all over this kid. "All hands on deck" effort to get him. He has relatives in Tacoma WA and a friend that will start playing for the huskies this year. They make it seem like a tough pull but he's not even ready to name a top 5 so it that would tell me he's pretty open.

We probably would prefer to bring in six guys along the CAT-WDE-SDE-DT-NT spectrum. And given that there is only one Louis Nix and he isn't available, three of these should lean heavily towards the DT/NT end. Hayes plus Dickerson sound like two. Holley would be three. If this fellow or Elam would come, then maybe staff would consider Hayes totally DE.

If available guys are not only powerful but surprisingly athletic, then you consider them all along the WDE-SDE-DT-NT spectrum no matter how big they are. Thus Tuitt, or Vanderdoes if he'd stayed.

He doesn't have offers from USC, Cal, Oregon or Stanford, so I wouldn't call his regional offers strong. He is a 3 star on Scout, Rivals and ESPN. 247 is the only service that likes him.
