As much as I didn't like playing Georgia, I "get it" why that makes sense.

I don't know what playing Ohio State does for us, unless we think beating them gives us an edge in recruiting that state. If Option A is Ohio State and Option B is a southern school, I'd take B.

Agreed, from a recruiting standpoint we seem to be doing ok going up against OSU. Where I think it would make the most sense from a risk/reward standpoint is SEC territory. Maybe because we'll be playing a lot of ACC games they believe we'll be down in the Carolinas and Florida enough. At this point not a fan of it, if it indeed is true.

I feel like we recruit the hell out of Ohio. I think it'd help recruiting there.

If we're going to play a big ten school, might as well be in ohio. We don't recruit Michigan as hard or as well as ohio.

Drop Michigan and MSU and add OSU. If they keep MSU/Michigan is back on the schedule by then, then I hate this move.

I think it will be an awesome game but I agree with you Lax it doesn't really expand our brand or help with recruiting but it will make for entertaining Saturdays in Cincinnati

Yeah, those are going to be some potentially epic battles and its good for fans to have these marquee games. It also potentially helps us with playoff aspirations, as OSU is the predominant favorite in the B1G for the foreseeable future. Whenever you can knock off a potential league champ, that can give you a trump card in selection debates.

One interesting thing... it shocks me that Hawai'i isn't a recurring home-and-home. It's weird that after Weis/Te'o we've almost completely stopped recruiting the islands under Kelly.

because we are gaining a good amount of players from there already...we don't lose many battles for kids in ohio vs osu, although we are certainly fighting for 1 next year in the TE

If we are already recruiting Ohio well, then whats to gain from playing them. Its risk/reward. So we gain a little but could lose a lot. I don't think we get guys like Hilliard if we beat OSU because they just offer something different. Now if we can get more kids like Tuitt from playing GA, where we don't recruit that well, then it makes a lot more sense. Keep in mind that we only have so many available slots to put in potential powerhouse programs on our non-conference schedule.

Sure, we recruit it well now. Wait until OSU starts winning and is eligible and makes the playoffs this year. Going to be a hell of a lot tougher IMO.

But my point is more so that if were going to play a trough game, at least play it where we're recruiting (not Michigan). Gotta take care of the golden goose.

This hasn't had much impact on their recruiting. Also, if a kid in OH is the right fit for ND he knows it, his family does, and is comfortable coming to ND. If a kid in Alabama, GA, NC, FL, TX etc. is the right fit for ND he doesn't know it, his family has no idea, and he isn't comfortable traveling up north for school. There are plenty of kids in the south that are good fits for ND but they don't have the exposure like kids that grow up around it. If you believe that ND focusing on Ohio is more important then that goes into a completely different conversation about national vs. regional recruiting and I won't be partaking in that at the moment nor do I think there is much of a discussion to be had.

I'm not saying it has. They haven't won a bowl game since Urban's been there and there hasn't been a ton of excitement because the undefeated season didn't count, but they're about to peak and peak hard, IMO. So no, it hasn't HAD much impact on their recruiting, but it WILL. Just my opinion on the state of their football program.

And I think you're missing my point, which I think you probably agree with. If we're going to play a tough B1G opponent (I prefer drop them all, but that's apparently not happening), at least play it vs. Ohio rather that UM/MSU. Those are tough wins in areas we do not recruit as hard as Ohio.

Agree?

They also haven't beaten a top 15 team yet. Urban has been good at beating up the bad teams but has struggled to win close games against the decent teams, and has lost to the good teams they've faced.

I'm with you. But good luck telling the recruits their schedule sucks when Urban's flashing playoff games (or worse) + 11-1/12-0 records in their face. They're about to roll (yes, partially because of their shitty schedule).

Just my opinion.

Fall Camp thread. Sorry for being part of the derailment but we should squash this in this thread. There will be a lot to talk pertaining to ND's camp and this is completely OT.

In what I have seen so far, I don't think I am off in commenting that everyone looks to be in better shape. If a player doesn't have more energy and isn't crisper, I haven't noticed yet.

Brent doesn't look like a freshman, he doesn't seem to run routes like a freshman, and he looks faster, as does CBreezy, DD, CRob.

The other guy that looks faster, I mean by far, is Everett Golson. Even though it wasn't a full go play, and Smith let off at the end, I was surprised that Everett even scampered outside on him at all.

CRob's hands are ridiculous!

The running backs look much faster, and more decisive. They all look more sure-handed.

Jay Hayes really looks good. After all the talk about Cage and Mokwuah, I think we have a pretty good complement of freshman defensive linemen. Also including Bonner, Blankenship, Trumbetti, and Williams. Did I miss anyone?

Kizer looked okay for a really big freshman.

Haven't seen much defense. But I am surprised at not seeing Tranquil, or Onwualu, or Turner more.

KeiV is a boss. And I know this has been a hot topic and some have given their explanation, but I'm seriously concerned with the amount of potential holding and def. PI calls this season. Those two loops above will almost certainly get called every time. And if the defense can't get off the field because of it, it'll drive me bananas.

Just any ol' southern school over OSU? Yeah, no thanks. We play 5 ACC games every year. We'll have plenty of games in the south. Give me marquee match ups.

I believe Tranquil can be seen with a good rep in the most recent practice video, locking Durham Smythe up with pretty good coverage.

I get that this is practice and all...but i am 100% completely on your side regarding this..every play by db's in the vids has been just blatant PI

Agreed. I'm worried about the 3rd downs, I expect to see many more flags. We must've been one of the least penalized teams the last few years and I took it for granted.

Tranquill is getting started off at S per what the coaches promised. Supposedly hasn't looked good... doesn't know the position yet.

Yep. Sometimes the PI is a good thing if you are simply beat. But developing bad habits in practice will come back on you in games. Hopefully they get that cleaned up.

This is my concern. You play like you practice. It's one thing to be aggressive. It's another thing to do what we've seen over and over so far in these vids. (I know, we're over-analyzing short clips from practices, but still.) One of my biggest pet peeves is having a team pushed back in 3rd and long and you give up a free first down by doing something stupid. I really hope that's not something that becomes the norm this season.

It's a legitimate concern and a momentum breaker for a defense if it happens. Still, I think the coaches will push to correct the issues. It's asking a lot of the secondary to man up when they haven't as much in the past. Once they get more confident in their skills, I think we will see a lot of this disappear.
