Baratti did have a nice interception in the Michigan game..

I don't know what to think about Farley yet. He showed flashes good and bad. Of course he was a new guy in the backfield, switching from WR. Hard to judge a guy like that.

I credit Baratti for not biting on the fake and being disciplined, but let's be honest, it's not like he made a play. OMM could have made that pick one handed while giving the heisman pose with the other hand. It was lofted to him from 10 yards out.

Not sold on Farley, either. I know that we went to the NC, had a great defense, and therefore it's hard to imagine him not returning and starting. And I think he will, but I wouldn't be surprised if Redfield is taking big time minutes by the end of the year.

Personally, I am bullish on our secondary. We all know that experience and depth matter in college football. We had neither in our secondary last year. You can't right off freshman--much less fr. safeties--based on year 1 performances (think Harrison Smith). And you can't assume that a unit can play at a high-level for 12 games without quality reserves. All that said, they were part of a 12-0 squad.

- Farley played incredibly well for a converted soccer-player, converted WR. He is an athlete from an athletic family. And he is so obviously very, very intelligent. I expect him to continue to step up his game in dramatic ways. In fact, I would not be suprised if he starts the rest of his career (I do think we will rorate more than we used to).

- Collinsworth seems like a potential D1 starter to me. He appears to have elite football intangibles (attitude, toughness, understanding to the game), even if he is not an elite athlete. He will force everyone in the unit to play tough nad smart if they want to beat him out. You are not going to go 85% knowing that the kid giving you a breather is Austin Collinsworth.

- Baratti was a true freshman last year who played all over the field in highschool, but played very little safety. He does, in fact, have pro-measuables. I see no reason to think he won't develop into a force back there, if he stays healthy. The fact that he played QB, WR, RB, and LB in high school is a very good sign, not a question mark- the coach wanted him in the action.

- Shumate seems to be like a more athletic Collinsworth. The sky is limit for him.

That is four I am very, very comfortable with, now that they have a year under their belts.

Then we have Max Redfield. Everyone in the recruiting world agrees he is a stud. I still think his playing time will depend on everyone's health. The guys ahead of him are great athletes with a year of the system under there belts. He could be a very good WR too, but I see Corey Robinson and Onuwalu already suprising people.

It's crazy that Onawala and Robinson are already getting good reviews, and they're probably the #3 and #4 most hyped WRs in this class alone. By all accounts, Fuller and Huner Jr. are expected to be better WRs.

FYI - I'm not expecting much from Onawala this year. Not a hater, just not buying in yet like a lot of you are.

Wouldn't be shocking to me if it is Redfield and Farley who are the starters by mid-season. One of them will have to beat out Shumate, which is a tall order, but I think they both have the talent to start and play at a high level.

All I am saying about Onawala is that it is clear we got a tough, athletic, smart football player with good size. He seems like a faster, more focused Daniel Smith (who has some ball skills, if you watch his high school tape). So together with Robinson, Fuller, and Hunter Jr., I don't think we have an immeidate depth problem at WR; I think those 4 are a MUCH more solid class than the previous year (before the departures).

So, IMHO, we have no need to take Redfield from his natural position. Its one thing to take a K. Russell, who was kind of a tweener, and put him on defense where he potentially becomes vital every play he's in. It's another to take away your prototype safety and future defensive QB to bolster the WR depth chart.

I'm not buying stock in Badger, Collinsworth, or Baratti. Of course, Baratti allegedly runs a 4.45 laser time at 215+, which would probably make him the most coveted safety in this year's draft based on measurables, but I would not be surprised at all if by season's end, Redfield is in the game more than all of those I listed, and maybe even Farley. Farley is a competitor, but not exactly a play maker.

Collinsworth because he's a senior and he's never really played meaningful minutes. Why would we expect him to A) Stay healthy and B) Be an impact player enough to pass Farley or Shummate who were playing last year?

Baratti will be good, IMO. Not great. Baratti made a few plays this year (honestly, a few is being generous). I think Redfield will be making a much bigger impact than Baratti did last year. I also do not buy Baratti's 4.45 laser 40-yard dash at all. I'd bet my alleged son that that's not an accurate time.

I do not buy it. A relatively chubby, 6'3", 220 lb player who runs a 4.45 laser doesn't come to a ND secondary let alone any secondary in the country (or NFL for that matter) and not stand out like a sore thumb. IDK if it's not really 40-yards, if they messed with the camera to get their website hits, or what but if Baratti runs anywhere near a 4.45 laser 40 I, Jake Kuehn, will wrestle a bear.

LOL!

Kuehnja, a chara,

What the fukkinda name is Kuehnja? (LOL, again.) You were the one that said you were bored.

Seriously, do not underrate Mathias Farley. This guy is tearing up. I mean sky is the limit. This spring he owns it. I have heard those more knowledgeable that me say he is looking beyond elite, maybe among the best ever. Normally I would say yeah, yeah, but privately and publicly Bobby Elliott has that "look" when he speaks (glowingly) of Farley.

And with DB's the difference is A) Bobby Elliott, and B) the combination of Bobby Elliott and Kerry Cooks. They are a dynamic coaching team. I mean having two for four, and two that are that good . . . and consistent. People talk about how many different coaches the guys up front have had, this group is almost as bad! They all will take a giant step forward this year!

If you're saying that, as of now, he wouldn't run 4.45 at the NFL Combine then I agree. But that's the strictest timing environment in sports.

Haha! I guess you don't believe Councell's 4.4 40 time either then?

Seriously though, I am not sure why a tenth of a second would make anyone stand out from the others in the secondary.

The laser could have been off or it could be an accurate time. Either way, Barratti was deemed worthy enough by the coaching staff to see minutes as a freshman last season. I think the coaches want to see a rotation of guys back there so my thinking is that the top 4 guys will see quality minutes. I think we will start to see more of a rotation at cornerback as well.

.... re: interceptions and "old people"--- at Iowa State in 1964 was it?, our grad school intramural football team {yep, we were ready for prime time} played the Chem Engineers, who had ringered in the previous year's ISU starter at QB {some guy named Schweikert or something like that}. We picked him off four times and I got one of them ---- so maybe I could have caught that Baratti interception. Stranger things have happened, though I know not many.

Regarding the discussion above: most of it is readable, but I can never get why some of us reach for negativity on some of our players. Why can't we make our points with positives about who we're "selling"? Or, at a minimum, "I believe that X has sufficiently greater speed than Y Z or Q, that this will be a major reason why he'll win the position". "Winning an IE argument" is less to brag about than me intercepting Schweikert. or Switzer, or Swarmbobble or whatever his name was.

While you fellows are speculating on how to get Max Redfield on the field, it might be relevant to note that the defense basically picks a positional player and sticks with him all game and all season [barring injury] --- I'm referring to DBacks here. The only alteration of this is mop-up time or nickel or dime. So, with Russell and Jackson holding two spots, and Lo Wood contending for a Nickel, and with Farley returning, and Shumate, Baratti, and Collingsworth wanting time [and it's not really straightforwardly honest to say that those three do not have significant experience], the DBackfield is pretty crowded with studs who can play. This is not to preclude Redfield from passing everyone up, but we shouldn't think that this is in any way an obvious "snap".

Conversely Kelly has a completely different philosophy as to receivers. He is willing to stick with a standard line-up if those guys are the ones who are really producing [ex. Daniels, TJJones, two TEs or one TE and Prosise or Onwualu], but in most games he likes to sub in a lot of different receivers. Some of that is situational but some of it seems like he just wants to get fresh legs and bodies and different types of receivers that the opponents aren't ready for on the field. Kelly likes using 6+ more-or-less traditional WRs in his offense [thus, Toma, Smith, Goodman, Brown et al].

Opportunity would seem to be broader for Redfield {or anyone} at Receiver for playing time than at DBack just now. Plus, Receiver may be easier to "fit into" with only August practice, than the Diaco D-scheme.

I have no idea whether Redfield's great talent will get him on the field in regular downs and have no dog in the race. All I know is that no one is a fool for arguing one of the many positions that I'm reading [including the redshirt one].

i think its possible to have a nickel sub package by adding a third safety in the nickel position. Bobby D has been doing this a lot with the likes of navy. did it with slaughter a lot in the '11 year as well.

What does his 40 time have to do with how well he plays the safety position? Do we want kids who stick out when doing a combine drill or when the ball is in the air on 3rd and long. I'll take the kid who gets the job done and has the wrong listed 40 time.

Using your example, you do realize that the kids with elite speed and athleticism are much better at making tht third down play, right?

If baratti runs a 4.45 laser 40, he's already shown he understands the defense so I will say Farley has zero chance at beating him out. If its true that he's a 6'2", 220 pounder with elite speed he is our starting safety and its not even close.

Reading an offense, getting into the right formations, getting others into the right formations, shedding blockers, tackling ability, intangibles... all things that also factor in other than just weight and speed.

Redfield is probably the best/most athletic WR on the team and he's not even in South Bend yet. Just get him on the field, IMO.

Sigh. Pointing out the obvious, thanks. Since baratti saw the field as a freshman, not to mention against our biggest rivalry in a close game (not to mention he played qb in hs) I assume he's not a mental clam. So going on the hypothesis that he can read a play book and recognize plays, there's no chance Farley starts over him if baratti runs a 4.45 laser 40. He'd easily be the biggest specimen on our team given those measurables.

I'll be sure to remind the coaches that high school laser timed 40 times are the determining factor in deciding playing time / starting spots.

Sigh.

That's part of it, but if you think speed rank is reliable in how they measures barattis time, then you must think he's the second coming of Taylor mays, who is the only safety I can think of that's in the 6'3, 220 plus range who runs/ran a legit 4.4-4.45 laser 40 yard dash. Given that baratti is smart enough to handle a defensive play book, he would start his entire career at safety. It would be really hard for even redfield to ever see playing time until he was a senior, assuming he stayed at the same position as baratti. You guys are nuts if you think baratti is that big and that athletic and won't start on an nd secondary. He'd be the best safety in the NCAA given he can tackle and read a play book.

If its true, beating out Farley will be nothing. He'll have as good of a chance as any of being a 1st team all American as a true sophomore.

When arguin' comes first, it is followed closely by logic rushing out the door next.

Baratti ran a laser timed 4.45 forty yard dash.

Farley will start at his spot and has a good chance of being voted Captain and making an AA team this year.

There is a log jam at safety.

It may not look like it yet, but there is a log jam at wide receiver (and slot) too.

Arguments are futile. More posts should start with, I would like to see . . . (me included.)
