I really was hoping to see him kill it on specials this year. Oh well.
While completely agreed, I am a tad concerned with the precipitous drop in schollie players. Eventually something has to give depth-wise, even if on special teams.
This would be my only concern. We do need some guys that are just content to run down the field and hit people like Bennett and Collinsworth were early on.
I'd prefer not to run every single 2-deep guy on ST. I'm sure there is a set standard that a head coach looks to have, and running all your 2-deeps (which is pretty much that whole list) on ST seems risky to me. I'm not sure what the typical status quo is though for a head coach.
I disagree and so does Brian Kelly. He even wants some starters on special teams not just 2 deep players.

I'm hoping that Jarron Jones listed in the two-deep is due to his effort and improvement, and not because of necessity.
Two things, as of when we played Bama in the NCG they have a more functional two deep across the board. Therefore player attrition isn't as big of a deal. Next, we aren't going to be playing starters on ST against Temple, Kelly means in certain big game must win environments he will start doing that. Bennett Jackson probably won't be playing ST.
Hey, they could have put Utupo there, or even listed Schwenke as a backup at both end and NT. I consider it an encouraging sign that Jones made the two-deep.
Agreed. But he also wanted some starters to step up and want to play special teams. See TJ and the punt return job.
As to the functional two deep, I agree that last year was a little rough for us but this year that shouldn't be as big of an issue, so there is no reason that we can't play lots of the 2nd team players on special teams and then occasionally sprinkle in some first teamers. I have to admit I would love to see Nix and Tuitt on FG block in a big game.
Good point. Does that mean that Rochell passed Utupo too, or do they play whole different position?

I think it means that Rochell and Jones are both ahead of Utupo ... but I don't know.
I feel like it's one of those things, kind of like whether there is such a thing as a "starting" slot receiver, considering that we will likely do a lot of two-TE stuff, that is more complicated than the depth chart makes it seem. I mean, Kelly said that Schwenke can play a lot of techniques and is the most improved player on the team, along with Nick Martin. So I get the impression that Schwenke is really the number 2 at all 3 DL positions. Not sure if there is a pecking order behind him or if it is situational or what.

I respectfully doubt that Kona is the second team DLine in any sense. Diaco needs bulk substitution there, just as in last year when Day/ Kona/ Tony would ALL come in at the same time to spell the big boys for a series or two.
Our second team DLine was supposed to be Tony/ Kona/ and Justin for awhile there. Tony went down and Isaac jumped everyone. So it's Isaac/ Kona ... and? This is why I believe that Ishaq is training about half and half as a "regular" DE. I look for a "Breather" DLine of Isaac/ Kona/ and Ishaq to sometimes show up in games. If Jarron really IS ready, so much the better --- we certainly could use some help there.
I also have a weird intuition that we might just see Stockton play some whether moving Kona to DE or he himself lining up side-by-side with Kona in a 4-3.
There wasn't much that surprised me with the depth chart. The only two things that did surprise me were:
1. Onwaulu over CJ
2. Bivin as the #2 LT. I realize Elmer is likely the true #2 LT should anything happen to ZMart, but seeing Bivin listed as a OT was surprising. I thought he was starting out at Center and also thought I saw him playing OG in some of the camp highlights. He's my personal favorite to take over for Watt at LG next season.
Also, I think it's safe to assume Collinsworth should be considered a near lock to return as a 5Y. To date, the only "lock" we've penciled in is Lombard while Collinsworth has fallen into the "questionable" category depending on who you talked/listened to. Hard to imagine the staff doesn't bring back a starter, regardless of how much depth is at the position.
I think Hendrix is a lock too if he wants to return.
