Lou Somogyi, editor at BGI, says that he can't remember a time when we've had 8 cornerbacks as good as Jackson, Russell, Wood, Luke, Brown, Atkinson, Butler and Kinlaw on the roster at the same time. Lou's memory goes back a long ways ... he is a true ND historian who has been covering ND ever since the mid-80s and following ND for more than 40 years. I thought that was worth passing along.

That is legit. Corner is honestly one of the positionswhere I have the most confidence. Ironically, our front 7 last year had to be extra special to take pressure off those guys. If our DL and LBs play as well as they should this year, our D could and should be the best in the country. No more chunk yardage stuff like Oklahoma (although it worked). Just simply shut down defense forcing turnovers.

Right. Lou was saying you typically only have four corners as good as our eight; he wasn't sure he could ever remember having more than five or six. And I agree, having solid corners, and solid corner depth, could mean we see a dramatically different defense this year. It's really exciting.

Lou said he does not remember ND having 8 scholarship corners on a roster. Not that this years group is better or worse.

having 8 starting corners should mean improved special teams play this year then! :)

Oh you are probably right. The exact phrase was "I can never recall having 8 scholarship cornerbacks on the roster like this season," and then he went on to talk about how well they were doing. At first I read that to mean he can't recall having 8 cornerbacks like these, but maybe he meant he can't remember having as many as 8. If it's the latter, not nearly as cool.

This makes more sense. Some of these guys are depth players and others are true freshmen who haven't played a single snap of college ball yet. Saying this is the best corner depth at ND since he's followed doesn't make a lot of sense...considering at the moment only 3 (maybe 4) are of true starter caliber (at this point in time).

its surprizing too all the CB's have stuck around and we have lost none to transfers. Compare this with the WR core for instance.

Well by default then you would have to be right Emcee. If we haven't ever had 8 scholly CB's then we couldn't have had 8 CB's this good.

Read the article. Lou doesn't say ANYTHING about the corners being the "best" or "better". He just said he does not recall having this many on the roster.

Ferguson?

Not sure about Davonte. I know he had a kid back home...

Those are the only two that come to mind that transferred and I believe it's well documented on this site that Neal wanted to be at ND but wanted to be closer to his kid. I don't think depth had anything to do with it. And I could be wrong but weren't there rumors around that Ferg didn't stay because of a mary jane issue, not a depth issue...and that was just the cover up?

Haha I suppose that's true.

But I think Damion is right ... the comment was about the quantity of guys dedicated exclusively to the cornerback postiion (especially compared to last season), not necessarily their quality. I read it wrong the first time.

Honestly I have no idea about that. They were just the two that came to mind.

And I do believe that Davonte made the decision for his kid. not based on PT.

Is devonte playing this year or does he sit out a year? Sorry it's in the wrong thread but I didn't want to bump his.

He'll have to sit a year unless the NCAA grants him a waiver. I don't think RichRod is pursuing one for him.

Originally, he was not granted a waiver. He's in an appeal process that is somehow still going on.

Everything I have seen says they are still waiting to see but RichRod was expecting it to be that he would have to sit out.

NBC's Keith Arnold just posted an article on the players fighting to replace Spond in the wake of his retirement:

BEN COUNCELL
6-4.5, 254 — Jr.

Just when it started to appear that Councell was in danger of getting lost in the mix, the junior linebacker will now be thrust into a very important role. A season after it was clear he wasn’t yet ready for a starting job, Councell will have another shot at taking control of the position, now three years into the defensive system.

From a physical profile, Councell is the best fit for the job on the roster, with or without Spond. At nearly 6-foot-5, Spond has the length needed to effectively play the position, and athletically he’s able to do a lot of the things that made Spond so good. Playing in all 12 games last season in a reserve role, Councell was able to learn on the job, chipping in four tackles during the Irish’s dismantling of Wake Forest at senior day.

Perhaps the best glimpse into Councell’s readiness for the job was gathered when the hulking linebacker was stuffed into a bleacher seat in Miami, doing his best to avoid the sun during media availability before the BCS National Championship game. Sitting beside teammate Jarrett Grace, Councell was open and candid about the learning curve associated with the outside linebacker position, but felt confident that his season spent mostly watching was far from a lost year.

While it appeared Councell was in line to back up Spond at one of the more crowded positions on the Irish roster, that confidence will come in handy as he now prepares to slide into the starting lineup in less than two weeks.

JAYLON SMITH
6-2.25, 230 — Fr.

Any worries about how Smith was going to see the field this season have all but been eliminated with Spond’s retirement. Instead of being a specialty wrinkle in the Irish defense this season, the door is wide open for the talented freshman to take the job and run with it.

That said, thinking that Smith will just step into the starting lineup and wreak havoc is a bit foolish. Just look back at other elite defensive recruits that came in as freshmen — both Aaron Lynch and Stephon Tuitt were used carefully as they went about learning the nuances of their jobs. All the skill in the world doesn’t do much for Bob Diaco if he can’t get his young talent to play assignment correct football.

Of course, Smith is a different breed. It’s not hard to watch just the glimpses of the freshman’s work on the UND.com practice reports to know that he’s the most athletic player on the Irish defense. With the ability to run like a cornerback and also crash off the edge, this is less a battle for the starting job than finding the way for both players to complement each other.

“They’re both gonna play,” Kelly said on Saturday. “They’re both gonna play a lot.”

ROMEO OKWARA
6-3.75, 258 — Soph.

If there’s one player potentially most effected by Spond’s injury, it could be sophomore linebacker Romeo Okwara. A season after seeing the field out of necessity, Okwara might do the same this year, cross-training once again at the drop linebacker position, even with the body of a defensive end.

There’s been plenty of speculation about potentially redshirting Okwara this year. The sophomore will have just turned 18 years old on opening day, playing all of last season as a 17-year-old college freshman. Of course, Okwara might be too good to keep off the field, and that he’s able to drop and run at his size gives you an idea about the Charlotte native’s athleticism.

With Prince Shembo and Ishaq Williams both sitting in front of Okwara at the Cat linebacker position, Okwara’s versatility might be his biggest asset right now. Then again, the whole position group seems to have the ability to do multiple jobs, with Kelly talking about Williams ability to slide down and be the third defensive end for the Irish, now more important than ever with a knee injury to Tony Springmann looking like it could be potentially serious.

Even with Okwara’s versatility, he’s likely the third option in this race. But with injuries reshuffling the front seven, the outstanding depth Kelly and his staff have built up front will now come into play.

Man, I hate to beat a dead horse but it'd be awesome if Romeo could RS this year. He has so much growing to do, and if he plays through we're going to miss a hell of a year from him.

You can redshirt your sophomore year (after playing your freshman)? I honestly didn't know that.

As others said, yes you can.

Kona was supposed to sit out two years ago, but Tuitt messed up and was forced to miss the Purdue game...forced Kelly to play Kona.

Still angry about that whole circumstance.

Another year of Kona would have been amazing.

Kona should just fake a back injury like Gardner.

Remember how a year ago this time the big question mark was the corner back position... things change fast in cfb.
