Notes from today:
- Golson looked good, but still needs to get up to tempo
- Also noticed Goodman's NOT so solid hands
- Cam Roberson was practicing and looked good
-Theo taking control of RB's for a talk
- Troy Niklas looked HUGE
- No real defensive highlights

Hansen has an article up on sbt and said Golic started at right tackle. This has to be an error no?

Man, when we didn't get our paperwork done on time for camp it meant lots and lots of running.

“@ISDUpdate: BK - team maturity improved in january when BK decided to become a better head coach and spend time with his players...”

“@ISDUpdate: BK *- felt he was drifting away from his players a bit... *feels he fixed it in off-season...”

“@ISDUpdate: BK - knew he needed to be a better head coach and he is more hands-on than he has been in recent memory...”

This is what i like to hear, admitting his own mistakes and improving. Starting to feelmmore hopefull about our chances this year

From the clip that I saw it looked like Golson was correcting Theo's place in the formation. It's good to see him taking charge rather then looking befuddled. I hope he gets it together, he looks like hes confident, if he really blossoms this year our offense has the potential to put on a show

Hounshell was 1 of 6 players I highlighted. Yeah, he played...but sparingly. "Mean streaks," whatever those are, don't impress me much. Lots of dudes in the world have "mean streaks", but it doesn't mean they're good football players. I guess, for him specifically, it will depend on how much Williams and Shembo play DE in 4-3 sets. If Hounshell gets in, plays some downs, and isn't counted on for ~40% of defensive snaps, then great, I think it'll be fine. If he plays a ton of snaps at DE this year, then yeah, I'm a little nervous. Of course he might turn out to be awesome this year, but I'm not counting on it, at least this year anyway.

Day is a true frosh. Anytime true freshman are depended on for key contributions...I get nervous.

The 4 guys I highlighted from the secondary: do I really need to explain my nervousness there? 1 sophomore who's never played a down, 1 sophomore who's never taken snaps in a game at CB, and 2 seniors (are they both 5th years, or just McCarthy?) who have basically never been able to contribute defensively on game days.

The depth chart will look a little different in a couple weeks...and again in a couple months. I really hope Hardy, Shumate, Jones, and/or _____ are all able to step up and help contribute this year. I hope J. Atkinson is able to really step up and be the 2nd/3rd CB the team will desperately need. But yeah, that depth chart, as it stands today, makes me nervous. Frankly, I wonder about anybody who feels good about it the way it currently looks.

So were you nervous when Lynch and Tuitt practically started last year? I get excited when I see young talent sniffing the starting line up, that means they are impressive more than anything

They did say he matured over the off-season and he spent a lot of time in the film room. I am super excited about Golson

Watch his highlight film, that is a mean streak. I know highlight film mean nothing. But, he has one. I do not see him playing a lot, but he is fine for a back-up. Does anyone have a link to the 2012 roster. I do not see one.

Does anyone know if und.com will have highlights from practice today?

Yeah they will. I actually think und.com is the only group that has access to every practice. I would check the site for a report around dinner time

Neal looks like he is electric, and GAIII is a beast, I see him pushing Cierre, and Amir pushing Theo.

I think he means he gets nervous when freshmen on "relied" on for key contributions before playing a down. Lynch and Tuitt just turned out to be freaks, I don't the coaching staff was depending on AL being an all american and Tuitt being a monster, it was just a pleasent and valuable surprise when everything worked out that way.

I am sure that some of or frosh may compete for playing time to get the necessary reps for growth and experience but, atleast in the beginning, it will be controlled then depending on how they perform (and injuries) they will get more and more time as the season rolls on.

Well I'm more than comfortable with Sheldon getting quality snaps in games. He has been here since January, so he has been around. The coaches trust him. So why not throw him in there in clutch situations? That's where real players are made

Yeah, but that's also where you lose games potentially. NOt everyone is clutch, and if it's tied 17-17 with a minute left to play at MSU, I'm not throwing out Sheldon Day to see if he;s a real player. As a D1 coach, I can't afford to do that. I'll put in KLM b/c I know he's a real player. Ask any coach if he'd rather have an experienced player in a clutch situation or a freshman, and he'll take the veteran.

That is the point he was trying to make. You'd rather have experienced, talented guys on the 2 deep vs inexperienced guys or walk-ons. Hard to argue with that logic...

Day will battle for alternating as a starter, (one a and one b thing). He is a freak above the neck, also.

Yes to Tommy and NDinL.A./S.B.

Tuitt and Lynch were exceptions. One could also argue, however, that Tuitt's "freshman mistake" not only caused him to miss the Purdue game, but blew a year of eligibility for a teammate as well. Look, I'm all for playing freshmen, much like GA III and Hounshell last year. Get the guys who are ready in on special teams and in mop-up duty all day, everyday...and for the rare specimens, get them some meaningful snaps like Tuitt, Lynch, and Koyack last year. But you can also pretty much bank on the fact that if ND were relying on guys like GA III and Hounshell to carry the load last year, arguments wouldn't be made that ND was 3-5 plays away from being a BCS team.

You can have a team full of studly freshmen who all the high school accolades one can receive, but the team would still resemble 2007. It's just not a position one wants to be in ever.

Physically, 60% of freshmen just aren't ready at all. And of course it's on an individual basis, and certain skill sets can do X for a team before a player matures and reaches his full potential. Plus you have to learn the position too even if you're physically ready.

In my opinion, WR, K/P, KR/PR, and DL are areas where you'd see physically ready freshmen play most often. They're just easier positions to learn than the rest. There exceptions to all of this, but that'd be my guess. That's why you see almost all OL/LB redshirt.

I feel like Sheldon Day is being somewhat under-rated in this conversation.
If we hadn't just landed Lynch and Tuitt, he'd be about our most talented d-line prospect in years. He enrolled early, and by all accounts impressed mightily in spring ball. Not saying he's going to be an All-American, but I don't see anything wrong with expecting meaningful minutes out of the kid.

I hope Hendrix is our starter...still not sold on Golson yet.

Neal can push Wood all he wants, I like him better at receiver.

I am a fan of Golson, I think his improvisation makes up for his deficiencies. I could definetly be wrong but I dont know that Hendrix has that ability.

Davonte looked great. He's very competitive, and his burst is ridiculous. I'm so excited for this year
