I do see some similarities to previous cycle debacles but also differences. Those really came about because of narrowing down recruiting to a small (sometimes very small) group and when we missed, we had extremely limited or no options. We'd just miss on numbers altogether.
WR resembles this the most, IMO. 2-3 spots to fill with a board of only 3-5 guys. However, there is one significant difference. We already have the best WR recruit of the Kelly era committed. Most of the scenarios/position groups we lost sleep over, couldn't say that, at that time. You may not agree with the targets but that's a different conversation.
On DB recruiting, I do think it's interesting that they are pushing back visits/possible decisions but I think the general tone is completely different. In fact, they just got done with expanding the board after in-person evals/school visits and are now in the process of focusing in on those new targets. Don't see how that's the same.
For example, would I take Jerrin Thompson on his OV and possible commitment. Yes, I would. Would I do so if I thought LSU could eventually push and take him out of the class. I'd probably wait until the fall as well.
With BVG there was a clear lack of direction and ownership with recruiting. With Diaco he got too stuck in his "profiles". That's just not the case with Lea, Elston, Polian, and notably Bill Rees. They are communicating, evaluating, and acting accordingly.
Lastly, I remember reading Loy's post NSD scoop and thinking how crazy it would be if we had another spot or two in the class. There was a lot of interest late, some real and maybe some not real, but it sure would be nice to be able to see how some of that would play out.
