Word. Now can we get back to Pyne and maybe carry on Lawrence convo elsewhere?

Yessir, June 28-30, 2019. Follow Elite11 on twitter and enjoy. Will give fans a real good glimpse into Drew Pyne’s ability compared to his peers. I think he’s going to excel.

I remember when they showed this camp on ESPN. It was a great watch. Love how they worked their mental just as much as their physical. Have a feeling Drew will flourish in that aspect (along with his fundamentals and physical traits).

Trevor Lawrence by himself. You can have Phil and Austin and Ross. Trevor Lawrence might leave college with a couple Heismans, couple national championships, first overall pick in the draft last year, this year, the next year, maybe when he was a senior in HS. I just think the dude is that special and he's only gonna get better. Best QB prospect I've ever seen and he's started in like 10 college games and threw 33 TD's and 4 picks.

I created a twitter poll yesterday for the next 15 years would you take Trevor Lawrence or Patrick Mahomes
. Out of like 28 votes Lawrence got like 43% of them. If you want a good read go read Phil Jurkovec thread.

I voted in that, and voted TL.
IMO, once TL fills out and bulks up he'll have a more productive NFL career. Since he is more of a pocket passer, and the NFL are treating those guys like porcelain dolls, he'll be able to stay in the league longer, and the fact that he's just such a great pass now and will only get better.
PM has more of an outside game and I just don't think he has the size and bulk to stand up to hits year after year.

Odds are higher he never plays.

I said the same about Book so who knows.

Isn't Drew a top 100 recruit or pretty close? I think Ian wasn't even a top 200 recruit. He may never play but it's possible PJ starts in 2020 and 2021, then Drew takes over in 2022.Buchner will challenge for the start, too.

Feels like a crap shoot. I thought PJ was the second coming, now not so much. I thought Book was filler, and was not even close. Waiting for the next second coming...

PJ is a RS freshman.

Ian Book had a 61.3% cmp rate, 456 yds, 4 TD/4 Int his sophomore year. PJ has time to grow/develop.

I still have faith in his athleticism and in his arm strength. If he can progress in the short/mid range game, he still has an incredibly high ceiling. Kelly & staff know how to use athletic QBs.

Does anyone think PJ will be a worse passer than Wimbush? (I love Wimbush as a human)

Per the Composite, Ian wasn’t even top 500, lol. Drew’s current composite is 177, but 247 actually has him in the same range as they did Book (487), at 460.

Wimbush might be the worst passing ND quarterback in this century, so probably not. This is in comparison to the other starters.

For the most part of Kelly’s tenure ND fans have been wrong about who the next starting QB is going to be, including myself. Everyone thought it was Crist and it was Tommy (also over a higher rated Hendrix). Everyone thought it was Zaire and it was Kizer. Everyone thought Wimbush and it was Book.

Everyone thought Kizer wouldn’t play either and he is now in the NFL

Kizer was thought of as a filler between Maliq and Brandon and he ended up being better than both. Clark may end up surprising people. It seems at ND, the ones who are least expected to ever play are the ones who end up multi year starters and breaking records (Rees, Kizer, and now Book).

I guess I was thinking Rivals because they have him #82. Ian was never in the top 200 of any service. I couldn't remember how low he was so I went safe with "not in the top 200"

Bring in a 4-5* QB every cycle if you can. That’s usually the best you can do.

2016: Ian Book
2017: Avery Davis
2018: Phil Jurkovec
2019: Brendon Clark
2020: Drew Pyne
2021: Tyler Buchner
2022: ???

I think the staff has done a solid job of always keeping the cupboards full. When that happens, you don’t have to rely on a FR or youngster to immediately the job from a leaving starter. When Book leaves (likely after this season), you’ll have 3rd year Phil Jurkovec, RS FR Brendon Clark and incoming FR Drew Pyne. At that point you’ll have 2 QB’s with experience and knowledge of the playbook and a QB who enrolls early so the QB job will be competed on in the spring, summer and fall with a full complement of QB’s. As long as they continue to recruit at a high level, I’m confident they’ll find someone who can play QB well. I think Phil Jurkovec will be a fine QB in his 3rd year at ND. Hopefully he gets a lot of minutes this fall.

Malik & Brandon did win the jobs and were the best options when they won it.

Until they lost it to younger less heralded prospects. Neither left ND the starting QB

Malik lost it to a serious injury THEN couldn't beat out an equally heralded & more experienced QB upon his return.

Wimbush won the job an started an entire season.

So succession went as scripted then changes happened for different reasons.

And Crist “won” the job as well, just couldn’t keep it. Don’t really care about who wins it, care about who keeps it.

Point is, neither Zaire or Wimbush were the answer that everyone expected. They were older, given their chance, and ultimately lost the position to younger less heralded prospects. Malik was rated a fair amount higher coming out of HS than Kizer.
