Not sure I've seen his film before.

He doesn't have the strongest arm, which before watching Tua/Lawrence go at it I would have said was overrated in CFB. But I think that's a bigger limiting factor now than I previously thought.

But he has fantastic feet for a HS'er, he moves in the pocket better than some CFB seniors. And you can tell he's a competitor, seems like a football player and not just a QB. Seems very accurate too, but they're highlights so of course all of the throws will be accurate.

Who woulda thunk? Koon not being fully impressed.

6-1 (probably under 6) and 165lbs at the beginning of the process probably isn't going to scream strong arm in the first place. He's still growing, and will get stronger. Will be interesting to see how he does in the camps.

Rich man's Ian Book? 16-17 year old Drew Pyne can already make throws that 20 year old Ian Book failed to make this past season. I don't know if that says more about Pyne or Book, or both?

Overall, I think Notre Dame is set for the next 5-8 years with Phil and Drew.

Nah, he's Ian Book with less mobility which is still a very good quarterback.

I think he'll be a tougher runner, and has more arm strength than Book. Which those 2 things would make Book damn good.

Nothing in that video leads me to believe he's less mobile. Although, there was a lot in that video that makes me believe his arm is already better than Book's and he's just as good in the short passing game.

Drove the ball well enough on outs and hitches. Ability to put it over the linebacker but not float it on some of those deep slants was impressive. Good feet, pocket presence. Leads receivers, throws well on the run.

Nitpicking... I'd like to see him bring the ball up about 6 inches when he is dropping back and setting up. He's got a quick motion, but it would be even quicker if the ball starts a little higher in his chest. Second thing, he reads the field, but a lot of them are dummy reads. He looks to one side without any intention of throwing there to come back for the deep ball on the other side. That will work a lot in high school, and does work some in college. But sometimes a college secondary will bait on that read. Either way, that's something that can EASILY be fixed.

Good thing he is only a junior in high school and has plenty of time to get stronger and work on all the issues you guys are pointing out.

Book had a higher completion percentage in college against some elite competition vs. Pyne playing against some 15-18 year old scronny kids. Everyone keep piling on though on annointing the next guy our saviour.

I get it. Everyone is on the 'Book sucks train' now because they remember one game from last year. It's the worst part of this fan base. It's the same with the attitude towards Kelly. Short term memory when something negative happens and on the other hand many still hold onto things that happened two years ago when we're in the middle of perfect regular season.

I don't think Book sucks at all. He's probably a top 30 QB in college football. But I'd be fooling myself if I said that he doesn't struggle pushing the ball downfield.

I never said that Pyne is a more accurate passer. It doesn't matter what kind of competition it is, it is pretty easy to see that Pyne throws a better, more accurate deep ball than Book.

If we're honest, there were 3 games: Pitt, USC, and Clemson. Any team that took away his short rhythm throws, jamming receivers, and got some pressure through blitzes caused him trouble. If you're a team coming in this year, you have a blueprint to slowing him down. I don't think I would say Book sucks, but he has some growing to do before we consider him "Elite" or able to take us to that next level. I think most fans see that and so we are hoping for the next guy to be the guy.

And everyone wanted to buy into the narrative that BW could improve and get more accurate... IMO, it's far easier for an accurate QB to get stronger and better at long passes, than a QB who has a strong arm and has accuracy issues in general.

It's also a head scratcher to me that folks write Book off without considering lack of speed at WR and poor line play. To have a good deep game, a team needs 1) a QB that can throw it, 2) WRs that CONSISTENTLY get separation, and 3) and OL that can consistently give the QB and WR enough time for the play to develop. The fact he was inserted after the 1Q of the season without 1st team reps to build chemistry is another thing people like to forget.

Who knows what he will do year 2, but it's just plain silly to write him off now.

If we're honest, Narduzzi called a hell of game and had Long head scratching. Clemson did as well, not to mentioned they smoked Bama too by doing the same thing.

If we continue to be honest, the next guy in won't do a lot better if the OL doesn't take a big step forward and WRs don't get faster and more separation.

Book has to improve no doubt, but so does the entire O.

Yup. TL is obviously a great talent, but some of the catches his WR made on completely mediocre throws were amazing.

Good things happen when you have speedy WRs, a dynamic RB, a great OL, and a phenom QB. His WR helped out a lot, but their OL are the real heroes IMO. Actually the trenches on both sides.

TL is a special and rare talent. Then you have an OL that ranked top 20 in 6/9 advanced stats, and then sprinkle in Etienne at RB, and 3000 yards or WRs in Ross, Higgins, Rodgers, and Renfrow.

Completely agree with your view. Well said! Not thrilled with some of the struggles, but I LOVE having a QB that can throw on time and accurately. Not to mention he’s a decent runner and pretty tough.

The point must have gone over your head. Book is playing against 19-22 year old D1 athletes and has a higher completion percentage than Pyne who only has stats in high school.

Sure Pyne could make similar progres or he could go full Wimbush and his accuracy could tank. Only one of them is a known commody as far as accuracy and his accuracy is excellent.

I think the better comparison would be Book's completion % in high school vs Pyne's. Book is a college junior and Pyne is a junior in high school. You can't really compare Pyne now to Book now.

I think it's a decent assumption that succeeding in HS is easier than at a major P5. But I do agree that it's cleaner to compare HS stats at the same stage. Still though, then you need to understand level of competition in HS.

I'll pull stats in a few. Might drop all of our QB's HS stats in a new QB thread if we don't have one alreay, and if they are easy to pull.

I have no doubt it's easier to succeed in HS than college but it's also safe to assume ND has better receivers than what Pyne has and even as terrible as they were this year, they have a better OL than a HS team. But then they are playing better defenses than HS QB's. So again the best comparison is HS Book vs HS Pyne. In a few years we may be able to compare college junior Pyne to college junior Book. Even then the level of receivers and OL that Pyne has to work with will likely be vastly different than what Book has, whether better or worse remains to be seen.

it's not really about "better" when comparing his HS WRs and OL to ND's. It's about his WRs and OLs performances relative to the competition in HS, and ND's relative to the competition at the D1 level. For example I'd guess Pyne's OL's performance is likely better in HS, vs ND's OL in college.

He's a talented QB that committed to ND very early, and hasn't played the off-season games that the recruiting services love so much.

His composite will drop to match once Rivals gets their act together.

Yeah, watch the film. He has no reason being a big-time prospect. (yet, needs to grow)

ISD had an article up about him a week ago. They see it the same way. Nothing that jumps out to you on film. He hasn't gotten any bigger year to year. Have to wait and see what happens.

But to answer your question. Is 247 high? The answer is, No.

I understand he needs to grow, but his mechanics are sound he he has a great arm with accuracy.
