Sunday’s Under Armour camp in the Baltimore area brought out some of the most-competitive aspiring college football players in the Northeast. Many Notre Dame fans celebrated exactly one month ago when coach Brian Kelly secured a verbal commitment from 247Sports Composite four-star safety Litchfield Ajavon.
After 247Sports national recruiting analyst Brian Dohn scouted Ajavon as one of the top prospects at Sunday’s Under Armour camp, there is even more reason to be excited based on his development since last season at Alexandria (Va.) Episcopal. Ajavon could be ready to play from day one and, "is everything Notre Dame should want in a football player."
“If you’re not a die-hard recruiting person who follows every turn, there’s still a lot of reason to be excited about,” Dohn said. “He is everything Notre Dame should want in a football player. He’s a good player. Academics are incredibly important. He comes from a very challenging high school. He’s going to fit in from that regard. On the field, you’re excited. Physically, he’ll be ready to play as a freshman. The question is if he can get the playbook down and assimilate to college. He can go play as soon as he gets on campus from a physical standpoint.”
Ajavon already looks the part physically. He chose the Fighting Irish last month, shortly after other unofficial visits to Penn State and North Carolina. According to Dohn, who twice scouted Ajavon this offseason, Notre Dame has a player that could be game-ready upon enrollment.
“He looked comfortable in his backpedal,” Dohn said. “I felt like he was a little more explosive this time. In coverage, he did a really good job of being physical, which is hard to do when you’re in shorts and a t-shirt. He’s got really good length. He was able to use his hands more fighting for the ball down the field. He’s not going to be a kid that picks off a ton of passes, but he has good ball skills and he can run.
“His work rate is really high. When he is in a rep, he is in it to win. He’s not just going through the motions. Look at him from a safety standpoint, which is where Notre Dame will play him, he has the physical size to come downhill and impact the run game. When you watch him drive on the ball, you understand how he can fill those gaps.”
Notre Dame’s 2019 recruiting class ranks eighth nationally, according to the 247Sports Composite. The Fighting Irish hold 10 verbal commitments, including eight four-star recruits and two three-star prospects. Notre Dame’s most recent commitment came Saturday out of Texas. Fort Worth (Texas) Nolan Catholic defensive end NaNa Osafo-Mensah verballed to Notre Dame as the second-highest rated prospect in the Class of 2019 to date.
