I think it might have been a Rivals article or PC that I was thinking about (where someone said they expect him to grow quickly into a SDE). Only so much stock you can put into the different depth charts... But like I said, I could have easily confused him with another as whatever it was, it was back when he got PT I think in September. I still could have sworn that he went in for Kareem. That's what is driving me nuts.

The depth chart above (in the ISD article) is the one released from the ND athletic department. Really the only one that matters. I have no idea why Rivals would have a different depth chart. Stuff gets weird over there.

Pretty sure a majority of his snaps versus Wake were at Drop. Same for against VT when Hayes didn't travel.

He very well may have substituted in for Kareem on some occasion or several but not that doesn't mean he's a SDE. Heck, Kareem has lined up as a 0T before, doesn't mean he's a NT. We run a variety of fronts and move the guys around. We'll put Okwara and Hayes on both edges, doesn't mean we run a 3-4. In the base, Justin is a Drop. That could change, but if we land Foskey I doubt it happens. For balance we want Justin to stick at Drop so the 20' depth chart is Justin/Nana and Ade/Foskey.

With some collection of Seniors Hinish/MTA, Juniors Jayson A/Franklin, and Sophomores Lacey, Cross, and Spears on the interior. Expectations are we should continue to field a very competitive DL.

Article mentioned that Howard Cross III is the same height as his dad was in high school and his dad’s final playing size was around 6’5” 270lbs. I’m telling you right now that if HCIII gets to 6’5” then he’ll be an all American. I think he’s that good. I think he’s limited by his size right now but if that growth spurt did happen then he’s adding to his very good skillset.

If that growth happens, there are a number of positions he could play on OL/DL. I know in the past we've struggled to field a dominant defensive front with competent backups but I believe those days are behind us.

He is one of the sleepers in this class. If he continues to grow late, like his father did...he will be an absolute monster.

I didn’t watch the second half, have it on DVR so eventually will, but Ryan Harris was raving about Howard Cross III on the radio. Ryan Harris was completely gushing over Cross’s play. Harris stated that Howard Cross III is going to be a superstar in the future. You have to love hearing that from a former NFL starting OL.

What would Harris have said if he had TWO tackles instead of one?

So is he an end or a tackle?

I really don’t understand your sarcasm. Sorry I’m just not understanding your point.

Point being that HCIII didn't really do much to earn the praise being heaped upon him (assuming he only had 1 tackle on the day). Not that he didn't play well, but I don't think it was quite enough to deem him a future NFLer quite yet...

There is more to being a productive player and playing well than just tackles and tackles for a loss. I trust what a former starting O linemen for many years in the NFL sees and evaluates over an arm chair QB.

I will say it was hilarious. Yes other ways to evaluate a D lineman beyond tackles made. Hope he can be more productive than Bonner though. Not sure how ,any tackles Bonner was in on but it wasn’t a lot.

He IS small. He's 6-1 & change. But so are Sheldon Day and Aaron Donald.

It's not a deal breaker.

Understood - just seems like we have a heap of those hopefully one or two of them becomes Aaron Donald like.
