Brock on final five: 'I really can't lose'

By Matt Schuckman Herald-Whig

As he narrows his list of potential landing spots, Jirehl Brock believes the recruiting process is getting easier.

"You would think it would get tougher," the Quincy High School junior running back said. "But I have really good options. I really can't lose."

Brock recently announced on social media his final five schools -- Iowa, Iowa State, Minnesota, Northwestern and Purdue. He eliminated Illinois and Indiana.

He is taking his first official visit this weekend as he explores the Northwestern campus in Evanston. He is in the process of scheduling the remainder of his official visits over the next month.

Brock figures he will narrow his list again to a final three before picking his college destination. He'd like to have his decision made by late June or early July.

Other schools continue their pursuit of the four-star recruit, in spite of his announcement this week. He said he recently heard from Notre Dame and Michigan.

"Until I sign on the dotted line, I'm hearing that will continue to happen," Brock said.

Getting him to change his mind about his top five won't be easy because of the common theme the schools share.

"The head coaches of all five schools, I have a good relationship with," Brock said. "The running backs coaches, too. I've built a relationship with them as well. That's a big thing for me."

If there was a surprise among his top five, it was the omission of Illinois. The uncertainty facing the coaching staff during its rebuilding process impacted Brock.

"I just didn't feel good with their situation," he said. "The coaching staff is in a must-win situation now. If they don't, they could be gone. I don't want to spend my college career going through a rebuilding process."

Final 5
Northwestern - 5/19 OV
Purdue - 5/26 OV
Minnesota - 6/9 OV
Iowa St - 6/18 OV
Iowa - 6/23 OV

Hopefully Deon McIntosh and/or CJ Holmes come back and we get Kyren Williams because we're losing out on a talented, talented dude in the area.

He’s being added to last year’s list of Malik Vann, Devin O’Rourke, and John Waggoner of guys who I hope one day play ND and get 4 sacks each (or in Brock’s case 200yds rushing) and go on to have marvelous careers.

Where's that thread? The All John Waggoner team thread. List of guys we should offer/take but don't.

I would imagine that 90% of any hypothetical All John Waggoner team would consist of Chicagoland and Forth Wayne area recruits lol

You hope they get 4 sacks each against ND?

At this point I'll take anyone at RB. I'm also surprised we don't get better backs given the OL we produce.

At this point....8 months before signing day, you'll take anyone at rb?

Hopefully the staff feels differently.

The fact he already came out with top 5 and a July announcement date makes me think field.

Using a Rudy pic in your ND offer tweet makes me think ND.

Well he cancelled his OV to Purdue so he has a slot open for an OV if he chooses. Or he can just make it over for an unofficial. Hopefully the relationship building started a while back and he can make it before the month long dead period. Cause if not, he’ll be taking his last OV before the dead period to Iowa and that could be a game changer.

I like this kid a lot. He could get up to 215-220. He is quick and could be a powerful player. He is not a breakaway guy but He is talented. Get him and Kyren Williams or King Dourere who I am a fan of and we would be set.

Without copy-pasting... the quotes in here are not good for ND. Says it'll be hard for the late teams to make headway. https://247sports.com/college/notre...hl-Brock-discusses-Notre-Dame-offer-119021216

It's not yet mid June, "late teams"?

Surprising paucity of quality offers for a RB rated 8th, 9th, and 10th by the various services. Only 12 schools have offered, all are regional.

Unless he has his heart set on one school why the rush to make it to the prom early. MSU and ND both offered, UM is at the doorbell. He noted that he has developed a relationship with the head coach and RB coach at his 5 shortlisted schools. Yet only one head coach, Illinois, visited him and they were dropped from contention. The other coaches visiting him were the ISU OC and RB coach.

I’m really curious as to what the numbers are going to be in terms of the numbers of top 500 recruits or so and when they commit for the 2019 class vs. the 2018 class and see if there are some changes in trends as a result of the newly implemented recruiting calendar and OV rules. It seems as this cycle there are more coaches over the summer saying, if we use an OV on you during the summer or spring we need your commitment soon or by fall we’ll be looking at other targets. And on the flip side it seems as though some kids are trying to get those five OV’s done as quick as possible in order to get a spot in the class (Luke Deal, Jirehl Brock, etc). However, I know that coaches have pressured kids into committing early since the dawn of time so that’s why I’d love to see a numbers count compared to last year when this cycle is over. I think it’ll bear out to be similar, but it does seem odd that a RB who’s a 4* talent would say late schools will have a tough time when he has 8 months till signing day to build a relationship with other staffs.

I also find it interesting that he's using OVs for "local" out of season trips. Minnesota at about 400 miles is his longest trip. ND is slighty less and MSU and UM about 100 miles more.

I suspect the lure is "instant PT" as Iowa's top 2 rushers both used up their eligibility, 1 rushing for over 1000 yds. The next 2 leading rushers had low carries but good ypc and were freshman.

Cancelled his OV to Iowa. Wiltfong and two other guys moved their Iowa CBs to Foggy. Supposedly he's no longer a take.

Iowa apparently took 2 Juco's instead. This is good news as that frees up an OV.

He has 2 more OV's available or 1? Looks like he took 3 with Iowa State looming.

Iowa State (scheduled for today, pushed back to this weekend when Iowa was supposed to be) will be the third OV.

Notre Dame was supposedly pushing for a fall visit despite him only having four scheduled, so I don't know if it was a matter of running out of OVs. Could be a scheduling thing, could be that ND wants more time to actually evaluate if he's a RKG.

If this is good for ND, I think it's because his preferred school pulling out helps vindicates the staff's arguments that he should play things slow and make a later decision.

EDIT: And just like that, Loy throws down a Minnesota CB, lol.
