Iowa State (scheduled for today, pushed back to this weekend when Iowa was supposed to be) will be the third OV.

Notre Dame was supposedly pushing for a fall visit despite him only having four scheduled, so I don't know if it was a matter of running out of OVs. Could be a scheduling thing, could be that ND wants more time to actually evaluate if he's a RKG.

If this is good for ND, I think it's because his preferred school pulling out helps vindicates the staff's arguments that he should play things slow and make a later decision.

EDIT: And just like that, Loy throws down a Minnesota CB, lol.

5/18 Northwestern
6/8 Minnesota
6/22 Iowa State

Ideally, ND could get him on campus for an unofficial before Friday’s OV. If not, they have 7/25-7/31 to get him on campus and then convince him to take in a game atmosphere in September. I think if ND really pushes hard then they can beat the three schools above. The issue is the three schools left have been recruiting Jirehl really hard for a long long time and idk if ND has recruited him much before the offer.

Terrible recruitment. Bungled from the get go. Kid is 5 hours away and has his Freshman thru Junior year film and stats available. Don’t know why they waited for sooo long to offer him. Could’ve been waiting for end of year grades to come in or something along those lines.

Or they just didn’t like him that much. Similarly to a lot of other big Power 5 football programs.

If Iowa was his favorite, and they chose Jucos over him, something had to steer them away??

Yea, and there are a lot of programs that didn’t offer. Not that by itself this means he’s not a good prospect, by any means, but there are obviously other programs that don’t think he’s worthy of a scholarship at this time. He was probably just further down the board for our staff. Hence trying to get him to OV in the fall.

Plus we just got an RB commit from a player we’ve been targeting for a long time. Staff is probably comfortable keeping an open RB spot for the fall. Which I don’t think is that crazy of a strategy.

Of note, TJ, poster from from Irish Illustrated (I’ll let the you all decide his legitimacy) said that the target for this class is 20-21 scholarships. If that’s the case, I’m not sure a 2nd RB is a given. As we’ve speculated here a little recently

I could be wrong, but I think Mike Frank at ISD has been saying 21 for a while now, too.

I wouldn't be surprised if the staff wants to check out Smith/Flemister this summer and fall before deciding if they want to take a second RB.

That would make sense. If those guys can really play, you don't want to create a logjam with two RBs in back to back classes. If they're not starter material, you still have some time to go after recruits who might be.

Yeah, basically every top Big Ten team passing + our very late offer + Iowa pulling out screams that either there’s an off-the-field issue or he’s simply not as good as his ranking would suggest,

That’d be my assumption as well.

Yeah it’s one of those tough timing things where Notre Dame’s staff did an amazing job during the month of June and got to a top 5 class and then the last week before dead period we see Zach Charbonnet go to Michigan, Jirehl Brock leave us out of his top 3, Donovan Greene commit to WF, Erick All commit to Michigan, and Nick Henrich start trending toward Nebraska. That shouldn’t diminish where the ND class stands but it was just a timing thing that some non-ND decisions all happened going into dead period. I’m sure right at the beginning of fall we could see some awesome news because ND has the biggest and best game to attend as an Official visit in the country in week 1!

I didn't see any of these kids coming to Notre Dame, so its hard to get upset about it. Charbonnet hadn't been linked to ND in months, Donovan Greene to ND story didn't have any real substance, and I'd rather have two 2020 tight ends so UM can have All.

The one that I guess would sting the most is the Henrich news, but the staff has already taken 2 linebackers that they really like. Plus, I have this sneaky suspicion that Notre Dame is in better shape for Tristan Sinclair than people think.

Not that it's a big deal but ND's handling of Brock's recruitment was poor.

Maybe the recruiters could apologise to him and explain they were typing his name wrong into google thats the only reason they were not all over him earlier.

yup allen lazard

Didn't Lazard have personal connections to the Iowa State program though? (like his dad played there or something). Also we took a legit shot at him. With Brock it was like things never got started - for us or any major program, really.
