I'm still in the camp of..... why can't we have open tryouts for a KO specialist? There has to be a soccer player or someone on campus that can put it through the end zone. Is it not allowed to put someone, already enrolled at ND, on the roster?

My understanding is that, if they are a soccer scholarship player, than that will count toward the 85 football limit.

are we at our 85 limit?

but the big Q, is can we add to the roster mid season as long as they are already enrolled at ND?

Absolutely massive commitment. Need to build some depth in the kicking game. I’m a firm believer in the Alabama route where they have 4-5 walk on kickers/punters who were top 10 dudes and the two best are scholarship guys. If you can ever get a top 10 ranked kicker in the country without a scholly then that’s a huge win. Hats off to Polian for Leonard and Rutherford

That moment when Koon realizes the new K dwarfs this cycle's RB.

I don't want a constant parade, just one guy for one year, that can come in and kick it through the endzone. KOs is a place we should always have someone (PWO, or soccer player, or existing student WO) that can kick it through the endzone. I'm not talking about FGs or Punting, just someone who can blast the ball consistently, then go back to the sideline and finish his beer and cigarette.

I thought that is what Doerer was recruited to do ... blast it thru the end zone?! That's been a major disappointment!!!

I text my buddy last week saying that we're likely to lose a lot of guys after this season, but the one that may be felt the most often next season is the loss of Yoon. It's been nice the last couple years to not stress out constantly during field goal attempts.

Yes, Yoon is my favorite ND player ever (not really), but he has been under-appreciated (at least online), and damn I can't believe he's almost done. Time flies.

Evidently a pretty good baseball player as well. Maybe he can walk on in two sports.

Wow, the staff must really be at it's wit end with Doerer. Is it a case of the yips? Or does he have some hidden injury? Doerer was a highly rated kicker wasn't he?

Can a kick off kicker really have the yips when their only job is to kick the football as hard as they possibly can?

From what I have read we are getting a good player. Hopefully he can really turn the corner on special teams.

Should we call this Gold Shirting?

PWO the first year, play right away, gets scholarship starting year 2.

Would have loved to have been a fly on the wall and listened to what was said, not said, how it was said and watched for the winks and air quotes during the presentation.

I think the staff is doing the appropriate job of adding depth to a position group. I think too many people look at the 3 scholarships or 4 for special teams and think that's what you need for special teams and that's it. I hope ND looks at it like they need 2-3 deep at each position group and only have 3-4 scholarships to work with. Basically get really highly ranked players to take PWO's to ND and when there's a big time talent then you give them a scholarship. Next year it would be nice to see ND pick up a PWO punter who is potentially ranked highly so they could have Doerer-Leonard at Kicker and Bramblett-Freshman at Punter.

Kicker/Punter
GS Tyler Newsome - #4 Kohl's, #10 Sailer
SR Justin Yoon - #1 Kohl's, NR Sailer
RS JR Jeff Riney - #34 Kohl's, NR Sailer
SO Jonathan Doerer - #11 Kohl's, #3 Sailer
FR Jake Rittman - NR Kohl's, NR Sailer
HS SR Harrison Leonard - #7 Kohl's, NR Sailer
HS SR Jay Bramblett - #4 Kohl's, #1 Sailer

Long Snapper
RS SO John Shannon - NR Kohl's, #2 Rubio
RS SO Matt Bushland - NR Kohl's, NR Rubio
FR Michael Vinson - #33 Kohl's, #13 Rubio

PWO now, but if he earns a spot kicking off or kicking field goals and extra points then reward him with one of the available scholarships that always seem to pop up due to a career-ending injury or transfer. If we can give Van Gorder's son a scholarship to be the holder on field goals, we can reward a deserving kicker with a scholarship when one frees up.

This was one of the smartest and luckiest additions to the 19 class. Huge need filled by a very solid kicker that we got to accept a preferred walk-on offer.

Agreed. I think we really lucked out on a lot of under the radar guys last cycle. Will be fun to see how they pan out.

Up 30 pounds & near 215 at the moment. Saw that last weekend in a post about notable freshman weight gains. I thought that was pretty wild!

Do you have a link

It was in a tweet listing all the June arrivals weight gains. I’ll see if I can locate it.

Update: Having trouble posting links on here. Twitter @CarterKarels posted 4 days ago. He’s a recruiting insider for the South Bend Tribune.

Why do non scholarship players have to enter the portal to transfer?
