That statement is not about Phil specifically but a general statement regarding HS students focusing on college and pro careers. If you think all students-athletes should play multiple sports then you should root for an Ivy League model which is the most ND like in make up without taking the athletics seriously like ND players do because of the level they compete at and the possibility of making a playing career a lucrative one.

Dear Overreacters,

I'm not against multi-sport participation... just the opposite in fact. But there comes a time when some athletes need to focus on their moneymaker and Phil's one of them. Compared to 99.99% of HS athletes, Phil has a chance to make one of his HS sports a multi million dollar career. He's already had a good time with basketball and had a nice HS career but if he plays next year he is risking a serious injury... that's not fair to ND.
God forbid he be a kid and enjoy himself for the last year of his high school life, before he has to endure the pressure and grueling routine of being a college quarterback. If ND mandated that Phil not play any other sports next year...would that be fair to Phil?

Phil needs to be able to walk on campus and compete for the #2 spot. His skill set as compared to Book and Davis demand that. In a perfect world, he'll get to redshirt but that doesn't always work out as we all know. ND is investing a lot of money and the most important position in the program on him as they are not going after another QB. He owes it to ND to NOT play basketball next year and from this day forward, he owes it to himself to train with a laser like focus to become the best possible QB at the next two levels. If you don't agree with that you should be rooting for Harvard, Yale or Princeton.

**** off. I'm pretty sure you're aware we are not a football factory, but your post says otherwise. Jack has said if the NCAA were to split into two divisions, with one containing academic minded schools and the other focusing more on sports, ND would be in the former category. ND cares about kids succeeding in life off the football field. Phil doesn't owe ND anything right now, not till he steps on campus. We need to remember at the end of the day this is just a game. It's a game we probably take a little too seriously as fans, but it's still a game. Who gives a crap if ND is investing a lot of money? While they do their best to shill fans and longtime donors, the fact is money is no object in this case.

Phil is not a slave. He's going to be a student athlete at the University of Notre Dame. Phil owes it to himself to be Phil and make his own decisions. We hope he makes the right decisions legally and academically for his own sake, but it's silly to say he should not participate in other sports during the off season. Urban consistently recruits multi-sport athletes and they work out just fine on the field for him.

I'm plenty mellow, and I don't really care who agrees with your opinion. Your opinion is wrong at a human level. Like it or not, you're treating Phil like an object here, like he's something to be owned. ND doesn't own athletes. Yes, they invest money in their success by offering them free education and benefits to assist in that education, but that's where it ends as long as Phil does well academically and upholds his end of the scholarship while on campus. It's up to Phil to decide how he uses his free time away from studies. If he wants to play other sports, that's his call and he's not wrong to pursue them, especially before he's enrolled.

I think what Crusader was driving at was that being ND's starting QB is a big deal. And we've made it clear to Phil that we want to groom him for that role, which is a tremendous opportunity for him. It also involves a significant investment on ND's part, in terms of money, time and opportunity cost (ie not recruiting back-up options in case he flakes or gets injured). So it's not unreasonable to expect that Phil recognize the enormity of the role and the size of ND's investment, and signal that his own level of commitment will be appropriate to those things. One obvious way to do that would be for him to set aside other athletic pursuits and focus solely on football.

We're not in a position to "mandate" he do anything right now, and both parties obviously know that. But there's still lots of signalling going on regarding both parties' level of commitment to each other. And if one party starts indicating that the level of commitment is asymmetrical, it's only prudent to take measures to protect against it. For instance, if ND indicated that it was no longer sure that Phil would eventually start for us, by recruiting another QB over him, he'd be perfectly justified in visiting other schools and opening up his recruitment. Similarly, if Phil indicates that he's not all in on football, ND may decide we may need to spread our bets around a little instead of going all in on Phil.

I don't really care about Phil any longer. I'm just crushed were not bro's. But at least we're pals. So we'll always have that.

Whiskey's not going to be happy that you don't agree with him. Could be facing a perma-ban. Italics probably applicable.

***Never mind, he seems to have taken your dissension and insubordination in stride. As you were.

Dear Overreacters,

I'm not against multi-sport participation... just the opposite in fact. But there comes a time when some athletes need to focus on their vBucksmaker and NDCrusader is one of them. Compared to 99.99% of board members posting about HS athletes, NDCrusader has a chance to make one of his comments about HS sports worth multi million vBucks. He's already had a good time with arguing with other board members and had a nice career creating recruiting profiles but if he argues too much next year he is risking a serious finger injury... that's not fair to IE board members. NDCrusader needs to be able to stay seated in his chair and continue creating profiles and commenting on this board. His skill set as compared to other posters demands that. In a perfect world, he'll get to wear a shirt but that doesn't always work out as we all know. IE is investing currently zero vBucks and a somewhat important position on the board on him as they are not going after another profile-creator / commentariat. He owes it to IE to NOT argue too much next year and from this day forward, he owes it to himself to train with a laser like focus to become the best possible profile creator / commenter at the next two levels. If you don't agree with that you should be rooting for NDNation, NDNation, or NDNation.

See, if Crusader's response wasn't so heavy handed and was more eloquent like yours, I'm sure there would have been less push back. That said, that doesn't change my stance on the topic. If Phil does want to pursue other sports, I don't think ND needs to feel like he isn't committed to football. There are plenty of very successful college QBs that were two/three sport athletes in high school. It's also true that for every Brady Quinn that meticulously prepares for football, there's a Johnny Manziel that prepares very little and is successful regardless (At the college level at least, the NFL is a whole 'nother animal). Before anyone starts in, I'm not comparing either of those QBs to Jurkovec here. I'm just trying to make a point that focusing all one's free time on football (Especially in high school) does not necessarily guarantee success on the field. It shouldn't indicate a commitment level either, Phil has obviously shown commitment through his attendance to camps and the recruitment process.

From an investment standpoint, ND is always going to be providing more to the student athlete than the student athlete provides in return. ND guarantees a four year scholarship to players that toe the line academically, and the player must stay academically eligible and attend their practices as part of that deal, but there's no guarantee that the student athlete will perform on the field....although at football factories they're completely fine dropping their end of the bargain if the player doesn't meet their qualifications on the field. Players will either find success on the field, or they won't, not every 5 star recruit becomes a household name and plenty of 3 stars achieve legendary status. ND spends tens of thousands of dollars on a student athlete's education, but that doesn't change if the player is a benchwarmer for 4 years. I don't think Phil will be a benchwarmer, but if he never panned out and he had focused on training his senior year, wouldn't he feel a bit cheated? I'd be kicking myself if had given up a final chance at playing basketball my last year of high school, only to ride the pine on the football field in college.

Ultimately, if Phil does play other sports, maybe ND should look at recruiting a backup option, but I honestly wouldn't worry about it. It's not like our QB plans ever work out 100%, there's always some unforeseen hand screwing with our QB development or causing prospects to transfer. It's pretty hard to achieve USC level success where a school just churns out decent QBs on a yearly basis with few, if any, hiccups.

Whatevs. Let the man live, at least while he's still in high school. Which brings up the more important question: Is he planning to EE?

ESPN seem low on all ND recruits. Ademilola not in top 300. Mustipher 250. Etc. Did we do something to them?

Seriously they are low on every single commit, except for Allen which they have him ranked fairly.

Jurkovec is a consensus 5-star QB. That is not up for discussion. The film has spoken.

Just another reason why few people pay attention to ESPN when it comes to recruiting.

He could be a 2 star, NR, prospect and he'd still be a perfect fit for Long's offense. He finally put out his Junior tape from the 6 games prior to injury and he's a baller.

Except no service has him currently rated as a 5 star. Just stating facts, not my opinion.

We should really begin to start calling them recruiting businesses. They're only doing themselves the service.

Don't care. His film shows nothing but 5-star caliber. I get why certain sites decided not to bump him due to his injury. It just emphasizes how utterly idiotic ESPN is by dropping him that low. He has no business being ranked outside of the top 50 of any site.

ESPN takes 247's player rankings then hits shuffle.

Jayson Ademilola is the 26th best DT in this recruiting class?

He's not a consensus 5 star and isn't a 5 star on any site. He's rated right where he should be and he has plenty of things he has to work on. But the tools are clearly there. Recruiting services put a lock of stock into camps and he has struggled at every camp he's been too. If he was a sure fire 5* he would be going to the opening instead he struggled and hasn't even received an elite 11 invite. He clearly has as much upside as any QB in this class but he's far away from being a complete QB and as plenty of things to work on

Are you implying that if he was a 5 star, he'd automatically be going to the Elite 11? Or are you implying that if he was worthy of it, he'd be going? Because they are different things.

The first implies that they will automatically bring in the 5 star QB's for exposure. The latter implies that they are accurately evaluating the talent and finding the best 11 QB's. First one I agree with. The second one is hilariously not true. The Elite 11 has been a joke if you look at the ratings and where the players ended up. For the most part.

No, I'm not implying if he was an automatic 5* he would get an invite no matter what. It's something that is obviously earned and Phil wasn't earned it yet. He's struggled in those camps. I was referring to him struggling in camps and it's a reason I believed he has slipped and isn't a sure fire 5*. He was some things to work on and he knows it. He's got all the tools to be a 5* three year starting QB at ND. But he's not even close to being there yet. But the tools and potential to get there are for sure there.

I guess my point was, is whether he makes the Elite 11 or not, has nothing to do with his talent level. They've been historically pretty terrible at judging that event, or at least that event being a predictor of future success.
