'18 OH DE Malik Vann (Cincinnati Verbal)

I have a friend who is very connected in Cinci HS football who thinks he's the real deal and best DL in Ohio. Underrated because of his measurables. This guy also talks shit about a lot of other players so I take him at face value.

I watched 3 minutes of his film, and here's what I thought.

If I didn't look at his listed height (6'1 & 1/2"), I would have thought he was 6'3". Just looks big out there, so I'm surprised to see he's only around 6'1".

Shoots gaps very well, but would be even better if he stayed lower (easy to teach).

Seems very strong - his go to move in what I saw, was just getting his hands into the chest of the OL and bull rushing them backwards. Very impressed with how strong he appeared. If he has speed to boot (I didn't see it only because he didn't use it in the film), I'd say he's a solid pick up and I'd be happy with his commitment.

People use the term elite way to much. This goes for the board as a whole. You can't watch Vanns film or others and throw out the terms elite anywhere in there. You are talking about the cream of the crop and the top .5 percent of high school football players. Malik Vann is a fringe 250 prospect. If he was 6'3 or 6'4 he would have offers from everyone. Fact is he's around 6'1 and doesn't do anything elite. Couver I'm not calling you out it's just you can pretty much go to any prospect ND is recruiting and you will see the term elite in there at least once. Also when you watch these "highlight tapes" there highlights of his season. If you are a 250 kid you better have at least three minutes of solid/great highlights. If you watch three of his games or more and think he has an elite skill set then that's fine but we need to remember we are watching highlight tapes.

I think this post is elite, because I believe in general we over estimate ND recruit's abilities.

I don't disagree with the premise of your argument, but you shouldn't use those numbers to prove your point. In 2016 there were close to 1.1 million kids playing high school football. That means if he is a fringe top 250 player, that is much better than 0.5 percent.

I meant to say the ELITE players are the .5%

Lesson to be learned. Don't talk numbers with an accountant.

Florida State offered him which is good enough for me. They recruit DL about as good as anyone in the country.

High school football players the elite, elite. Top 20 guys heck top 30 if you want. Just so you know
I totally guessed on the .5%. I was just trying to sound cool

I know, it just grinds my gears when a number gets thrown around with little or no thought.

If you want to say 5 star caliber is elite, your number is ~ 0.002%.

Does your number assume only 22-ish players from the senior class are elite?

25 consensus 5 stars, 2017 had more than that, 2016 was right at 25 and 2018 is now at 26.
I personally think elite can be more, since that is usually position dependent.

Also has TN, OK, and WI offers. Right? And we all know if he commits to ND, he will get his OSU, and probably his UM offer immediately.

But I really liked his Pitt offer. I think Narduzzi is bringing in the right talent for the Panthers.

Yeah 1.1M HS football players let's say that it's evenly split over all 4 grades that's roughly 275,000 seniors playing football. If Cannot is the 250th best player that puts him in the top .1%.

Not elite?

Ok fine, forget I said the .5 I was honestly just throwing a number out there without doing any research on it. My bad, my point was this board uses elite in just about every Notre Dame recruit thread and it needs to stop. If you want to call him a good solid prospect fine, no arguement from me. But no one who gets paid for a living to do this thinks Vann is elite. That was my point but I'm really glad everyone is focused in on the .5% I said.

You have to use this formula to determine if a player is elite or not.

It appears you forgot the "did he come to our summer camp" factor there at the end.

Add in the 'Kelly-Denbrock RKG derivation method" and we'll have our answer. I noticed it was woefully lacking from the original screenshot.

Do you even RKG bro?
