I think that's unfair.
The ND talking heads have been pushing the idea that the staff has been higher on Franklin for a while and I agree with dad4 in that I was also disappointed with PJ's score. Emil Ekiyor who HH reportedly thought was not in good enough shape to recruit ran circles around him even though he's 50lbs heavier.
Ekiyor:
6-2.5 - 339 lbs
5.18 - 40
4.78 - Shtl
50.0 - PB
26.0 - Vert
Total = 101.97
Yea. Those numbers are not good and seem to validate what the staff must think. They don't view him as a disruptive DT, probably best positioned to play NT.
I'm not big fan of evaluating solely based on combine numbers, at this early stage of development, as a lot can change with maturity. However, what I will do is see if what is on film is somewhat validated, or not, by combine numbers.
For example, when I watch PJ's film I don't see a quick twitch DT. He's long, strong, uses his hands well for a HS Junior and he seems to understand leverage. Those are all traits of a solid DT, which I think he'll be. However, I do not think he'll end up being an extremely disruptive DT. He's not very quick off the ball, he is very deliberate in his movements, and seems to lumber a bit. I think these numbers validate that. It's mentioned that he's enamored with the idea of being a gap shooting 3T, which I don't see, and I don't think ND does. However, that is what Tenn. and PSU are pushing. I think he could be a very solid NT. So I think these numbers are another piece to the puzzle that says, he truly might not fit what Elko is looking for.
