Find it comical to look at the weekly polls and see Penn ranked #1 in 6A with another blowout win against someone like South Bend St. Joseph. It happens every year.

Carmel is a good team and that is the first time Penn sees one every year, in semi-state. Bullies of Northern IN HS football. I don't even think they play Fort Wayne.

Then find it comical that the Indy writers vote them #1.

Why should they play Fort Wayne schools? They're no bigger than The NIC or DAC teams they play right now. Plus they schedule good out of state teams like St Mary's MI and Brother Rice IL

What the State of Indiana needs is a 7A classification for the mega schools. All of the MIC, the bigger schools of the Hoosier Crossroads, Penn, Lake Central, Crown Point & the consolidated Elkhart HS which will be 3700ish students.

Even then, Carmel will win the majority of the state titles because they have 5,300 students. Just like Penn used to win state championships when they were equal size as Carmel 15-20 years ago.

6A only has 32 schools. Not sure what a 7th class would accomplish.

Besides, in the 4 years of 6A in the state, 4 different schools have won: Warren Central, Carmel, Center Grove, and Ben Davis.

Carmel is far from world beaters. There's schools here that get them every year, but yes, the rest of the state won't win again at that level.

No disrespect to this kid, but is he good enough to get an offer? If he's such a lock he seems like someone you can slow play for a while.

Agreed. TE recruiting might be a struggle after the haul last year though.

1. 20-25 of those schools have no business being in with 5,300 student Carmel and the 3,000+ student schools like WC, BD and Penn. Hats off btw to Center Grove for being able to compete with just 2500 but they have the whole southside to recruit and one of my HS buddy's from MC had to get an apartment in CG's school district so his kid could play there instead of Franklin Central.

They moved LaPorte into 6A. A town of 22,000 that just barely has 2000 students only because their school district goes 20 miles in each direction. They were just... ok at 5A but they got thrown in with Carmel and Penn because they wanted 32 in 6A and possibly because they advanced to a state final at 5A on a unbelievable run in '14 when they had 5 losses in the DAC alone. So Indiana might have a Euro Soccer system where you get bumped if you are successful, which works for the Cathedral's and Andrean's but no one is getting recruited to LaPorte.

2. It's not just the last 4 years, the MIC schools and Penn have won ALL of the championships going back into the 90's except for 1 championship by Fishers... who should be in the MIC and has over 3000 students.

3. Carmel is the world beater. I've never looked it up but I guarantee they have an insane lead over the second place school in team and individual championships. They've got the most kids, they've got the most resources.

Which is exactly why a 6-6, 3 star legacy like Anthony Torres makes sense. No?

Points taken.

To the Carmel being world beaters statement, I'm talking about football, which they CERTAINLY aren't.

I don't give a crap if Carmel dominates swimming, cross country, etc.

They have 8 state football titles, Warren has 8, Ben Davis has 8, and Penn has 5. Like I said, far from world beaters.....

*Im a biased WC employee who loathes Carmel, so TIFWIW. They have replaced Valpo from my Region days as the rich kids you want to see beat every game.

Looks like you have your 3 world beaters right there... all at the top of the Mega Indiana Conference.

Valpo? Did you go to a DAC school? I thought you went to one of those shady Lake Co schools like Griffith or Calumet? Why waste the hate on Porter Co when you had Segregation High right there in Munster? Valpo was my big rival. Of course 3 of the guys in my wedding played for the Vikes. Even though they're a bunch of snobby, rich, country club d-bags, they're ok by me. lol

Good memory sir. Went to Calumet schools up until 10th grade, and finished at Portage High School.

Through my experience, Valpo kids were generally snottier than the Munster ones, but my exposure to Valpo was much more intense in Portage than my exposure to Munster was in Gary.

*I'll PM anything else that pops in my head about this, so we don't turn this kids poor thread into two Rats arguing about the Region, which I agree has a 0% chance of ever winning a state title again in any sport.

Hell if I know. What I do know is that it's bullshit to act like Penn has to travel all over the damn state to be relevant. It's high school football, not travel league. They play their conference and then try to schedule teams within a reasonable distance. They end up facing the best of the state when they get to the playoffs, just like everyone else. I also don't see Indy teams coming up here to play northern Indiana teams either.

I was just saying, that everyone makes the playoffs in Indiana HS football. I don't disagree that they should HAVE to go all over to schedule teams, BUT, if you want tougher competition to prepare yourself for the postseason, it doesn't hurt to schedule some out of conference schools who are better.

Thank you...those world beaters would welcome a home and home with Penn. Why doesn't Penn TRY to get that? Come down here for one, play one at home...two good games a year. Instead they go to Michigan???

Penn hasn't won a title since 2000...LOL. Please save that they've won 5 titles BS.

1. Do you have a link to where those 3 schools have publicly asked Penn to do home and aways? Why would they want to?

2. Carmel was scheduled to go to Penn in '15 for a pre-season scrimmage and backed out last minute.

3. In any given year, Penn is no worse than the 5th best program in the state. What's wrong with that? If they were in a conference with LN, LC, NC, Fishers, HSE, Noblesville, Brownsburg, Avon and any other big school in Indy, they'd win it 90% of the time or more. They'll continue to square off against Carmel every year in the tourney until they change the format... and that rivalry has been competitive over the last 3 years as I showed.

Don't let the 6A poll bother you if Penn is on top. We used to laugh when the Indy schools were ranked at the top of the basketball polls in my day and the entire metro area could only win a title about once every 10 years. That's the power of the Indy Star. Polls mean nothing.

To be fair, WC has gone to Ohio the last two years to play Colerain and Carmel went there to play Lasalle in 2015.

This is a little of topic but Elkhart Central and Elkhart Memorial are combining schools. That will make things interesting as long as kids can stay eligible. Elkhart has kids that can fly and ball but they all seem to quit school or get caught up in things.

Surprised Crusader didn't jump all over this one:

Years ago, Michigan City Rogers merged with Michigan City Elston.

To be blunt (and unfortunately racist), the general consensus by many people was the "athletes" from Rogers paired with the "discipline and coach-ability" of the Elston kids would create a mega-team. Think "Remember the Titans."

Here we are two decades later, and MC is still a pile of garbage athletically, perhaps even more so than before.

This whole Penn and Elkhart schools thing will probably get moved to the office topic thread...

But to add to the Elkhart schools thing, a number of people I know in Elkhart think the administration is doing it for athletics no matter how much the say it's for the kids educational improvement.

1) No, but would be a good start for Penn if they'd like to be in the conversation. Until then never rank them #1 in the best class of this state.

2) OK...???

3) Yes, again, ranked them appropriately. Then ranked them 5th. Never, ever, should they be ranked #1, again. Ever. Until they deserve to be so.

We'll pick this conversation up again come October when Penn is ranked #1, again.

No, never had the pleasure to compete against Penn. One of my high schools (who says the Catholic schools don't recruit is a liar), although rich in championships, was not big enough to schedule them. Back then...we did however own Cathedral (now 6A for some reason, think they are moving back to 5A), our bitch per my words, but that was a long time ago...long enough ago to remember Penn was worth a conversation.

I'm passionate about HS football in IN. My pet peeve is seeing them ranked in IN's best division above 3 or 6 teams every year who everyone knows the are not better then...

Playing South Bend Saint Joseph is the equivalent of Warren or Ben Davis playing Ritter or Scecina. It is a joke.

I have a thought getting back to topic...speaking of IN HS foolsball. 6A and 6A only with having just 32 teams. Instead of N/S pairings, why not just rank them and play true tourney style? That might mean a north school having to go south vice versa...but will give a true champion. Plus prevents Warren/Center Grove/Ben Davis/that other Indy-area 6A school from knocking each other off in round one Sectionals....

Crusader, Steel, Beau...I'd be interested in your opinions among others. Wooly can keep his in his pocket.

Penn is a prisoner of its location. They do try to schedule at least a couple of strong out of area teams every year but what are they supposed to do about their conference or local rivals? Are they supposed to travel and hour plus to most of their regular season games (or their opponents)?

Look at you going all wax poetic about your high school days. You must have been really cool when you were a kid. Bet you coulda won state if coach would have just played you in the fourth quarter.

I understand, but yes...travel, if that is what it takes...and play someone good. Invite them to do the same...they will home and home. Went to Michigan twice but couldn't go to Indy once? For their best interest, if they want to compete again...they're first good game cannot be semi-state.

LOL. For what it is worth I did play every down of the fourth quarter and we did win state. But football wasn't the sport that paid every dime of my college education.

1. Once again, 32 teams don't belong in the current 6A. If you got rid of all the little LaPorte, Valpo and Chesterton's (schools with 38% of Carmel's enrollment, you'd get Penn down to the Indy mega schools in the second round after they beat Lake Central in round 1.

2. Next, does basketball do such a system? Football should follow however the King of Indiana does it.

3. I'm not sure how old you are but were you the guy calling for LaPorte to play in the Indy sectional so they could prove they were the best baseball program in the country?

Good points, but - if not 32 than how many? Can't go to 7A with only 8 or so teams can you? And if so that still doesn't help Penn and their garbage schedule. If it has to be 32 then rank 'em and let the best play at Regionals forward...

Basketball is a 12 person sport. Stop comparing hoops and football.

I didn't even know LaPorte had a baseball team. Are they good apparently?
