Has there ever been, or ever will be, a bigger miss than Sam Hubbard? How our staff failed to get a kid actually committed to our school for a different sport is beyond me. Who needs big, athletic defensive ends, amirite?

Don't know if we would have gotten him, but I thought slow-playing DeForest Buckner while we had Manti T'eo on the roster was the dumbest recruiting move I can remember. It taught me to not trust the process.

We had just come off our DE mega-haul, so we slow played everyone and got no one. We were fine with that at the time because... we were stupid.

Slow playing talented-DEs is always dumb.

Not recruiting Gio Bernard hard during Kelly's transition was also mega-dumb...

As my father used to tell me, "If you're going to be stupid you better be tough".

Not really sure what he meant, but I can really take a beating! Cheers

The funniest part by far is when they asked him some question after signing day about what school Demetris Robertson should pick and he was like "oh definitely Notre Dame, they set you up for life. Love that place."

But our staff was like "nah, pass..." Yeah, who needs a guy like this? lol.

It's also fair to say that some staffs like players more than other players. They liked Claypool more than Callaway. Another staff may have liked Callaway more than Claypool.

That's the beauty of recruiting. A coach can like a kid most staffs don't like and he pans out ...it's a great story. It goes vice versa as well.

There were teams that never offered Justin Brent even though he dominated at The Opening and looked like a million bucks. Notre Dame missed.

If Notre Dame never offered a top player in Indiana, who dominated at The Opening and passed the look test, can you imagine the uproar? They would have been off not offering him in hindsight, but they did and took him.

There are players each class that are borderline bc half the staff likes them and half the staff doesn't like them. Then it comes down to need and skill set. Every school is going to hit and every school is going to miss when it comes to these kids.

Why did they need to choose between Calloway and Claypool?

Notre Dame has passed on a few Indiana 4-stars during the Kelly era. They always just say they aren't a good fit.

The fact is, college coaches have to make tough decisions under a lot of pressure and time constraints, and sometimes they make bad ones. Sometimes those bad ones were made for good reasons, and sometimes they were made for bad reasons.

Ezekiel Elliott at DB......

Thanks Diaco

Yes Eliot right there with him.

Thank Jon Tenuta for scouting Fox and completely over looking Keuchly in the same game.

Nothing against Dan Fox. Everything against Jon Tenuta.

His brother is a member of BGI and posts there from time to time. So the family clearly likes ND, as has been mentioned before. But I haven't seen anything directly mentioning if this would be the case.

Can we please add him, Mustipher and one more rush end to this class? Anyone care to grant me this wish?

In the above interview, with BGI, this week, he had this to say.

“As a kid it was always my childhood dream, but at this point with all the offers I have right now it’s not really a straight just, ‘Oh I’m set going there if they offer.’ It’s still going to be a big decision to make and I’m going to have a lot to think about.”

Think ND could take a huge lead here. What's he going to say public "ya if ND offers its over for me"? Most kids don't but hopefully he lives out his child hood dream. Would be nice after Wagner went to Fitzgeraldville. Plus everyone who is pounding on the table screaming about why we haven't offered him in march can relax. Would love to see any offer this weekend.

Could lead? lol They've led since birth.

O'Rourke is committed to Northwestern at least until ND can't get what they want. That remains an if.

The table pounders have every right to question the process. But there is no doubt this staff is more in tune with the pounders than the last and that is a good thing.

They're clearly trying to get guys like Booker, Carson etc. on campus first before moving on to the next offers. Doubt this is BK's decision, more than likely Elko's.

Right, but this is what they do every year and it didn't work.

It's one thing if he doesn't fit, but we all know that we have to do better on the DL here, and slow playing the good ones rarely works out in our favor.
Booker is my number 1 want in the class though, so be ready for my melt down when he picks the tree and Waggoner stays home or is a Buckeye, lol.

Not really, we'll be getting a majority of our top targets, at his position (tyreke Smith, Carson, Booker, Perkins) on campus in the spring, and have a good idea of where we stand. We're not chasing pipe dreams. Again, those 4 are planning to visit before the summer is over. We are going after mutually interested players, that they like better. Hard to really argue with the approach, IMO. They'll have a really good idea of where they stand by the summer. This staff is much more aggressive with communication and staying in contact with recruits.

That's actually a great point about the new staff. They have done an excellent job landing some top targets in Allen and Gervin, but I think DL recruiting just haunts us fans. Hope Elko can rid us of that stigma and get the most out of the guys this year to ensure it. Daelin Hayes is my pick to get recruits at that position to notice us again.

They haven't landed any top targets. The other staff had 2 top DBs committed for most of the 2017 cycle, and even had one of the most promising DEs committed early on. None of them signed. These aren't OLinemen. Kids de-commit.

The problem isn't that the strategy is bad in the abstract. The problem is that BK has not had actual success with this strategy for years, especially at DE.

The only two real rush ends we've landed in the last 3 classes are Hayes and Okwara. One had a brother on the team. The other is a regional kid who had a strange recruitment. Other than that, it has been all go for plan A, watch plan B commit somewhere else, scramble for plan C.

I give some position recruiters, like HH, the benefit of the doubt. But D-End recruiting has been bad.
