Wouldn't really classify Shayne Simons as elite. I think he's a tweener like Allen and it's pretty much why Allen dropped in the rankings

3* on 247 and not in the rivals 250

Agreed, but he's pretty darn good and I think severely underrated. He's also a perfect Rover for Elko.

My thoughts exactly and regardless of the fit, I rank him as a top 150 player with his skill set, elite athleticism and great size. I also watch a lot of prep film and I find St. P's to be very well coached and play very good competition. All of what I said makes him being anything less than a mid 4 star a head scratcher for me.
Just my opinion and we all have those

One of the best recruits in the country at a huge position of need. Just an absolutely monster pickup. Welcome young man!

Hey now. Don't be hatin on the Ville.

He wasn't, he was hatin' on the drive. We bought a company in Evansville and I've had to make that drive a couple of times recently. It's a pain in the ass.

If I'm reading the Bogs tea leaves correctly, my guess is Gant

Gant is the only one I will be clear about.

Gant isn't anyone I expect to commit in the next week. But don't read that as bad. It isn't either.

But there will be others. Maybe it will rain recruits.

Get an umbrella.

He's not a composite 5 stars, or a 5 star on any site. I know, who cares and just be excited, but I was just pointing that out before everyone starts going with "we got a 5 stat corner".

Derrik Allen, Lassiter, Cornerback

Wow, that's a real drop. How come? And someone should correct the OP. That's where I got my rating from.

Derrik and his family and other closer sources that I have heard say the staff likes him at corner against bigger receivers. That's what I am going by.

People that slam his speed - 'yawn.' Kind of like a conversation I heard about a freshman enrolled at ND. Same thing some said the year before about Tony Jones Jr, watch how that turns out.

Fact is, Derrik can jam, disrupt and has really nice feet to play off the receiver, and stay in a position to make the play. Those aren't my words, I have a hard enough time spelling them, let alone understanding them. But I understand from a couple of people I bother about such things that they are true, germane, and that shows Elko excelling in recruiting, because that is a specific need he has, and he was able to fill it so well with a capable player. Now we are past my depth.

Except - Yesterday, the day after the kick-off event in the ND Class of 2018 recruiting effort ND landed two awesome cornerbacks, and I saw over a dozen posts bitching about something or another. Not yours, thanks for correcting my obsolete data. But I have to wonder why a guy like this drops like that, also.

Man I hope that's not true. We haven't had an elite safety since Redfield, and the only thing he turned out elite at was guns and drugs. Leave him at safety and never think twice about it.

What corner plays at 220? That's what he's going to be. I trust the staff won't F this up but I can't believe it's being tossed around that he's a corner.

He's an athlete in the secondary. He can play whatever the f position he wants to play in the secondary. If He can cover at 220 pounds, then why not put him at corner in some spots? Watch his tape and you'll see that he is really good at cornerback.

Because we recruit safeties poorly, and not as well as corners. Because he's really big and going to add some weight. Because we don't have an elite safety on the team, or committed. Because Clemson thinks he's a LB, etc. Did I answer it?

He's one of a kind and has elite speed, which Allen does not. He's obviously safety and not a corner to me. Hell, Clemson thought he was a LB.

You asked, I told you. Thems the facts.

If you want to go into hyperbole, then we can also ask how in the hell Richard Sherman plays corner at an elite level being 6'3"/205 with 4.56 forty speed. Way taller than the normal corner and without elite speed. The reality is that the defense being played has a lot to do with where your secondary guys are gonna play. Clemson plays a lot of man with their corners. Hence, it makes sense that they don't see a fit there for him.

Well I mean you're right, there exists really large corners, but they're few and far between.

I just hope he stays at safety, primarily because he has the size and we've had such poor luck recruiting it. I know corner back recruiting hasn't been exceptional either, but it's been much better than safety recruiting.

Elko plans. I don't know, but at this time I have no questions of them.

And sure, there is always the possibility I screwed up on this. But I don't think so.

We have safeties. And we have a few scary big and fast ones coming. I don't know if we will land them, how admissions will go, etc., but we are looking at some back-end behemoths. That I can say.

I would think of this guy at another position, too. Because that's always the way it's been at ND, but, don't look now, the talent level is rising pretty quickly.

If someone says ND needs another big corner to bang these jumbo sized receivers, who am I to disagree?

What's the "f" position?

The email being quoted is in response to all the rover idiots out there. If you read much Irish press, and post much, everyone talks about who will play rover.

Bunches of people are saying he will play rover.

What bunches of people can't figure is that he dropped Clemson like a rock because they saw him as a linebacker. He isn't a linebacker, and doesn't want to play linebacker.

His problem isn't speed, he even talked about adding a little muscle for some explosive speed. Which he should be able to do, and would be all he needs.

And didn't people say DV wasn't fast enough and couldn't play corner, before the season?

Funny, it used to be the small guy at corner that everyone dismissed. Not it is the big one. You can teach a position, you can even teach speed. But you can't teach the kind of length this kid has.

My opinion doesn't have a ton to do with thinking a big guy can't play corner, it's more about who in the hell is going to play safety at an elite level around here. We've sucked balls at getting safeties, and will probably have to move 1-2 corners to safety this year just for that reason (Watkins, White are my guesses).

As far as that conversation : Remember when Elko talked about moving everyone, all the heck all over the place in the spring? And then moving them again by summer?

They're not thinking about hiring that guy are they?

Heard more than once, there are nothing but problems with that guy, Ben Dover!

Why does he have to add weight? Our new S&C staff may develop a program where his primary focus is agility and speed.

He doesn't have to add weight. He's already safety-size, which is part of my point. But my bigger point is that we land CBs easier than Safeties, so when we get a legit safety, I hope we keep him there.
