It’s a lot tougher transitioning from high school to a freshman student-athlete at ND than most schools...including Clemson. That’s a huge load for an 18-19 year old on his own for the first time.

Besides, Austin won't be a 5th year guy unless he drastically underperforms expectations.

I expect Austin to lock down a starting WR spot by the 4th game of the year. He's too athletic and talented for anything less.

That's assuming Book has improved on the deep ball or PJ received the promotion.

Yep. I'm excited to see what he can do if he's locked in and stays out of trouble.

Looking for a BIG spring game from him, Young, and one of Keys/Lenzy to get the hype train going on these young WRs.

Austin will be special. After him, I'm most excited for Lenzy.

Agreed. If he comes anywhere close to Fuller (one can dream) and Stepherson (w/out the drama), I will be ecstatic. We really missed the skill set that those two gave this offense this season.

That's why Boykin leaving was such a mixed bag for me. He was easily our most productive receiver and a great talent..but I'm excited for what the ceiling can be with this offense with speed on the perimeter that we simply didn't have with Boykin and Claypool both on the outside.

I would have loved Boykin to stay IF they split him and Austin up.
Austin + Boykin/Finke/Keys + Lenzy/Claypool would be my lineup.

Are you down on Young? What’s your impression of him? I think he has shown flashes of great potential minus the turnovers. He hit some big plays here and there throughout the season.

I was disappointed in how little we saw Michael Young this season.

I don't think he's as fast or dynamic as Lenzy or Keys can be, but I don't think he's that far behind either. I also think he is a very underrated blocking receiver. He's got wheels but he's also not just a willing blocker, but surprisingly very good at it. We need that.

I hope Finke's role in the offense is like Renfrow's next season. Not a starter, but he's still part of the rotation and sees a good amount of throws. But we need to really bump up our athleticism and speed at the position. If that means seeing more Austin, Keys, Young and Lenzy, so be it.

I completely agree. Looking forward to what Austin is going to bring to the table, but Young has had some nice contributions. He just needs to gain some confidence and experience in order to lockdown some of those turnovers. You described his positives well. The potential is there.

Same here. I hoped all year long we'd see more Austin and Young targets, and at least get a look at Lenzy (and others). Just seems Long went with the "safe" guys 99% of the time.

I should have listed him with Claypool. Was responding too quick. I do think he's got a lot of potential, but I do think others will likely pass him. I think at minimum he'll be a solid #2 at one of the WR positions.

After watching tonight’s game it is obvious the speed of our WRs has to improve. It was like having small TEs out there with Boykin and Claypool. You can just tell that Austin is football fast and fearless.

I'd bet Book mysteriously is able to throw the long ball overnight as soon as the OL holds up and we start playing some of the speedier WRs that can actually get down field and separate.

To anybody that thinks this is true, I’d suggest trying to watch an All-22. Or just read ISD’s breakdown where they highlight some of it.

LL, not saying he's a long ball guy. What I'm saying is that just like BW stunted the growth of a lot of our WRs last year simply by not being accurate or having timing issues, Book's growth with the long ball has been stunted by OL inconsistency (no trust, or just simply bad play), and lack of separation downfield due to slower WRs.

Keep in mind, Book didn't have 1st QB reps preseason, and what he inherited as targets were guys who were out there to make the best of BW's 50/50 tosses. What Book did with what he had at his disposal was amazing IMO. Having 100+ ranked OL, slow WRs, and still having a top 10 QBR is pretty crazy.

Give Book some time with guys that can separate consistently, and with an OL that he can trust, and I'd bet you see that improvement. I simply find it hard to believe that he can be awesome (accuracy and timing) on short and intermediate tosses, and that bad with longer throws (he showed he CAN throw it long),..... and he did have a couple long balls that were dimes.

We shall see.

Again, watch the All-22 or read some insight from someone that has.

insight about how he performed with a 100+ ranked OL and slow WRs, after not getting 1st team reps during spring/fall practice and the first 3 games isn't going to tell me anything definitive about how he will perform with a better OL, and a full off season with 1st team reps with faster WRs to build chemistry.

who knows if long balls will click with him, but it's silly to assume he can't take a major step forward with a better OL and faster WRs.

A lot of offense left on the field with clean pockets and WR’s with separation, that’s all.

they'll likely say the same thing about Bama and Tua.....
and Bama has a top OL and speed at WR...
just saying.

Not sure I get your point? Tua was 22-34 for 295 yds. and 2 TD’s. With 8.7 yds/att. Not sure how much more offense was on the field than that.
