I'll go ahead and start this year's thread with this jewel.

Wake Forest has lost 7 players with eligibility (either quit the team or were dismissed) since Feb 2018. Incoming they have 6 Freshman signed in the 2018 class as well as 4 transfers. Not really sure what's going on in Winston Salem.

I just saw this before you posted. Very interesting development. I think it'll be hard to develop the League because some of these 18/19 year olds could use the practice against a 21 year old who has been in a D-1 strength program for 3 years before turning pro.

And the true NBA-ready talent pool is going to be small. So the League could end up having 8-10 players who are NBA-ready and the rest aren't going to get drafted. Then what? They've already blown their amateur status in the eyes of the NCAA, correct?

Believe so. But given everything that is going on in federal court (and the cases still yet to go to trial), I would have to imagine this hurts the Duke's, UK's, etc who have been relying heavily on this talent pool in recent years. Hell, look at Duke this last cycle. If it's true that Zion Williamson's family (and who knows who else) was walking around hand out to major CBB programs, why would the want to "play school"?. The $125K, shoe deals, etc would be quite the incentive to forgo 1 year of college.

Good segment with Brey. Also, I subscribed to the Yahoo College Sports podcast about a month ago, and it's really fantastic. The other one I would recommend is "One Shining Podcast" from The Ringer.

Anyway, anyone else so needy for College Basketball that they watched the Duke Scrimmage highlights? Will be interesting to watch them throughout the year.

Bold prediction: Duke is outside the Top 10 by the start of the NCAA tournament. Watching them play, I'm not sure they have a guy who they can rely on to actually hit an outside shot. With so many good teams in the ACC that can take advantage of that, I think they drop quite a few more games than anticipated when you pay, err, get the number 1,2,3 rated recruits in a cycle.

I see what you are saying but I disagree. It just makes the talent pool in each class that much thinner. For example, guys like TJ Gibbs or Harvey would be more welcome to open arms to UK or Duke if their Plan A guys decide to head* to the D-League.

However, after typing that, that does bring the talent level of these teams down a notch so maybe in retrospect it does hurt them. Interesting to think about what this will actually do to the NCAA as far as "superiorities" in college basketball

Are you surprised? Been going on for 30+ years. Duke doesn't keep landing all of the 5 & 4 star recruits year after year because Coach K has a sparkling personality. UK started doing this when Rupp was the coach. Wooden was well known for stock piling players.

Coach Painter from Purdue was speaking about this subject yesterday. He mentioned how players were getting incentives years ago, it's just the structure has changed. It used to be primarily HS coaches getting money from shoe companies and boosters to sway kids. Now shoe companies have created their own sponsored teams & tournaments and pay these dads to run the team. Money is then funneled through them or a mystery man. By forming these elite teams and tournaments they have unknowingly exposed themselves and made it much easier for authorities to figure out.

I saw a G League article last week and it was short on details, as this is an evolving proposition. On the surface, it sounds great.

However, I highly doubt the NBA will pay multiple projects 6-figure-salaries. There is ongoing friction as it is among the owners and players association regarding access to medical histories, especially when it comes to nixing the now standard of being 1 year removed from high school. I think they will definitely continue to pay multiple projects 30k salaries though.

That being said, I can't imagine a system that will actually be much different from the current set up- owners paying for development when they can get it for free from colleges and young, often misguided, people making terrible decisions for themselves and families' futures.

Good opening night last night.

Kansas looked unbeatable for a moment, but MSU made it a game.

Duke looked unbeatable for a moment, and then continued to look unbeatable.

I HATE dook with a fiery fiery passion... but living in the midst of UK’s fandom, I’ve gotta say: it was sweet, beautiful schadenfruede to see Coach K doing John Calipari’s thing better than Calipari himself.

Calipari hangs his hat on recruiting the studs and letting them grow, so UK fans are always ready with the “these guys won’t be freshmen in March” excuse if they lose a big early-season game.

It was hilarious to watch Coach K go full dark side in building his team the same way, and to see his young group look so much better than Calipari’s.

Calipari is always going to get outcoached, but the talent usually covers it up, or the youth of the team at least offers an excuse. Not anymore. All the UK fans on my social media pages are at a loss, because they realize they got smashed by a team that was just as young as their own. Already a lot of, “what are we even doing with Calipari anymore?”

It’s wonderful.

Caught just a little of both games.

Anytime Duke loses it's good, but it's always better when UK loses. Especially with Calipari at the helm given he's left programs right when they were coming under the scrutiny of the NCAA. UK fans showed up in droves in Indy for this game. Ride home was longer than expected.

Sparty losing isn't a surprise. Izzo's teams have a history of losing these early season matchups against other top ten teams. His teams tend to gel when the B1G season starts.

If a meteor would have hit that Dook vs KY game five minutes in it would have been the best thing for this season in CBB, IMO. Those paid pros with no intent to do school have no business getting in the way of true student athletes. Truly impressive athletes but if I want to see that I will watch the NBA.

Just depressed me to watch some of that game after streaming the ND game earlier.

I was so happy (as an IU fan) to see Romeo Langford playing yesterday and some of the new freshman at IU. Really looks like it will be a better year for them.

Then I watched the Duke vs UK game and was wondering how anyone is going to compete with Duke. They are the top of college basketball IMO and I'm not sure how they aren't #1 in the country.

Don’t get your hopes up. Brey has been know to stick to his senior leaders when it comes to the starting 5. This may be a Mooney move.

However, it's been a long while since Brey has had a "leader" (that was a senior) that has unperformed. He's had the Jerian/Pat/Bonzie/Matt's that grow into stud's by their senior year, and he sticks with them blindly (justifiably so). There's also the Austin Torres captains that never had "a big role" to begin with, so there's nothing to "pull".

This is going to be the first time in a long time where he's had a starter "plateau / underperform" to this level. I think he's definitely capable of making the switch. He's not going to pull a Joe Schmidt on us. Especially considering Rex won't be a part of the future and this season is probably going to be a development year anyway.

Time to trim the fat, unfortunately.

unranked IU spanking Marquette so far 19-4. Very excited for their chances this year.

ND was frustrating as hell tonight.

You an IU fan or ND?

They have their own boards, ya know?

Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk

I'm both. Born ND, IU bus grad.
It's what happens a lot when you are an Irish Italian German Catholic born in the 70s in Indy. Come at me out-of-stater...

Romeo is awesome. Very happy with Archie so far.
That game should get them into the top 25.
22pts in his first big game. Phinesee did pretty good too with 12pts and 8 assists too.
Looking forward to @Duke late this month.

IU vs Duke coming up. IU too injured to have a shot.

Anyone else watching the OSU vs Syracuse game?

Not much in this world gives me greater joy than watching Boehiem's face when his team is down, but good lord this is a poorly officiated game.

Fouls are 20-10, with 3 or 4 guys on Syracuse with 4 fouls (with almost 10 minutes left).

Yet somehow the Orange are up 7.
