'17 NY QB Jack Coan (Notre Dame Transfer)

Im not confident in what we have in our other QBs and I think Buchner needs a year at least to grow. Coan seems like a day 1 starter if he can gel with the other guys.

Film was nice. Decisive, progression checks, and some decent deep balls.

FWIW, Sampson commented that if Coan was on the roster he would be penciled in as the starter today for 2021. Not saying that holds true but if you had to roll with one TODAY, he’d be the guy.

What film were you watching? Dude stood tough in the pocket and took hits getting rid of the ball. Go watch the film study that Urban Myer did on him. Meyer talked about him being very good at going through his reads/looking off DBs and standing in the pocket to make a throw.

I didn't notice one highlight where he seemed to go through any progression. First read and throw. It is nice that he attempts to pull DBs away from the first read by looking them off. Not impressed. He had the advantage of a devastating running game, but may have lacked outside threats. Maybe with a better surrounding cast, he will perform better than he did at Wisconsin. I just don't see much of an improvement from Book...in fact, I think Book is a better QB...more accurate and more mobile than Coan.

IMO, ND would be a more competitive team if we had a very mobile QB with adequate throwing skills. Think of Wimbush with better passing skills.

Literally none of this is true, and easily refuted by using your eyeballs. The only similarity in their games is not stretching the field vertically. Everything else is a virtual opposite.

I feel like he is the game 1 starter. I don't know what happens by game 6 though. If Buchner reverts to his old throwing motion and is destroying the D in practice, they will have to get him on the field some.

The alternative is he get his first minutes in the Horseshoe in 2022, with likely a full stadium, at night.
