Heard his name come up on the BGI podcast as a candidate to move over to FS. I think he would be the least evil option of all the freshmen currently listed as corners, and his upside at FS may be even higher than at CB.

I still think you train Watkins at FS for the 3 weeks whIle he heels and let the freshman continue to grow in their roles they've been working on rather than switch it up on them but coaches know best.

Cool. But they need someone else their for Texas. And I don't know how many reps you get in on a guy that just had surgery to stimulate bone growth.

I asked around, didn't get a good answer, but I am still thinking that Watkins may not be much of a contributor this year. (See THJr. as a Freshman.)

Agree on Watkins. I thought Love was best suited for safety out of HS so I was somewhat surprised he stayed at CB through camp. I'm not sure he has enough speed to match up 1:1 with some top-end WRs, but his athleticism and willingness to hit could be an asset on the back end of the D. Like you though, I defer to the coaches on this since they've seen more than the Hudl clips I have watched.

At Texas, your options are:

Tranquill at FS, Studstill at FS2. Sebastian at SS, Elliot at SS2.

Or,

Studstill FS, Elliot FS2. Tranquill at SS, Sebastian at SS2.

Not agreeing/disagreeing with you, but since you bring up 'what about Texas', here's everything we have without any movement.

So,

  • Do you think Tranquil is enough improved that he can provide any kind of downfield coverage?
  • Do you think that Sebastian is healthy or fast enough to play at all?
  • Do you think that it pays more to amp Elliot's game and start working on someone like Love to back him up, or move someone that has no possible future at the position?
  • Do you look at Sebastian is any more than a placeholder?

Personally I would go with Stud, Elliot, and maybe a Love as a backup for Free, for Texas, and keep Tranquil at strong. I would rep Elliot or someone else in for Tranquil at strong if I had a chance. But that is all.

You are right, it is all about picking the best possible safety talent with the longest career, unless you have someone who could pick it up really fast and move back in a few weeks.

Like maybe move Vaugh to corner, and Luke back for a couple of weeks because everyone agrees that he knows every position cold. I don't know, there are many permutations that we haven't considered; I am interested in the ones the coaches have.

No - he even joked himself that he's not fast enough to play SS, let alone FS.

Apparently not - although I've literally never seen him run, but based on reports, too slow.

I think it pays to consider Watkins at FS since he could at least learn the plays/calls while he sits out of practice. That doesn't help us for Texas, but if there's an injury at SS or FS, it sure does down the road. And Watkins is tall and fast - I like that at FS.

I agree. Great in coverage and tackles really well. Seems really intelligent.

Don't worry, we have plenty of time left to screw up his form and technique

Got to talk to the media and I'm really impressed with this young man. One of my favorite quotes "I didn't expect to play, I prepared to play." People with that mind set often times breed success.

Thoughts on his play yesterday? How do you guys grade him out?

you first

I just said in the Troy Pride thread where i asked the same question... i was at a loud gathering and watched it like a typical fan. I'm gonna rewatch tonight with the remote so I can see everything. Obviously, both Love and Pride had some negative replay moments but that doesn't always mean they were bad throughout... although Pride would have had to do some incredible things that I missed to get back to an acceptable grade.

Was hoping some of you guys had already watched it with rewind.

Pride and Love were once against solid with their play. DB's had a total of eight passes defended which is excellent. Even when Miami's athletic receivers made catches the coverage was good. Nyles Morgan even complimented the three young corners saying they are going to be great players.

I haven't seen the game from yesterday yet and I understand Vaughn had a great performance, but from what I've seen so far this year I'd say Love is easily our best freshman corner. Great instincts, good tackler. Makes honest mistakes but not a lot of catastrophic ones.

What grade you giving him?

Can't watch the game with the remote till after the Cubs game or tomorrow morning. I fan watched the game at a watch party yesterday. I'll report back afterwards.
