On the bright side he will be a seasoned player next year, instead of a first year starter.

Also, I asked Sampson if Elliot is now the backup to Devin and he said yes.

Told you. I want to see how his progress is coming. That's the key.

This is clickbait, or a serious point about how good our class of '16 really is. Period.

Studstill is back and ready to go. Glad he didn't go nucking futz over the weekend!

I don't agree with that. It's a serious point that illustrates both the players feelings about how tough the position is in this scheme and our lack of depth at said position. I really like those players but this is far from an ideal situation and neither would be the starting FS against Texas without this taking place.

What sucks is someone like Devin Butler who has experience and is a senior can't slide over to the position. Going to have to rely on Drue. Have to really lean on him.

I see your point!

I'm just ready to turn the page; its kinda refreshing, to be honest. Max was always a bust and I think we truly have a future NFL starter at FS now.

Over his career, I'd be shocked if he isn't substantially more productive and I agree with the general sentiment. However, the ideal scenario would've been a completely bought in Redfield and make a slow transition to Studstill.

One of the things I've noticed this year is that Kelly is really impressed with the attitude and competiveness of this freshmen class. He said you could look in their eyes and see they had no fear when it came to competing at this level. That being said they're still freshmen.

I think that's a very naive assessment. The safety position is a serious question mark

Tranquil just became one of the most important players on this defense. Let's all say weekly prayers for his health.

Seriously, he will likely be tasked with lining up the backend of the defense the rest of the year. We really need him to stay on the field.

I think this kid will be a stud. Still, he is inexperienced so we should expect a learning curve.

Perhaps this will be a blessing in disguise if it forces Van Gorder to simplify some things and play more straight up.

DS was an EE, body still felt the demands of camp. Hard to see him stay healthy for a full season at such a demanding position. That's not even discussing level of play.

I'll be praying for safety play all season.

We will be playing soft coverage with a single safety deep all year. Going to be as conservative as Diaco

BVG hasn't shown much flexibility with personnel and scheme. It's scheme most of the time. per the coaches, they've already made some changes in the secondary with regards to scheme and communication, in an effort to simplify the game for the S's. Beyond that, I doubt they dumb it down anymore.

Big praise from the PFF team.

DE Isaac Roshell led the way for Notre Dame’s defense last night with one quarterback hit, one hurry and five run stops. He also had two missed tackles and still managed to grade quite well, which shows how dominant he was at moments against the run. NT Daniel Cage had limited snaps but also contributed to the run-stuffing efforts, notching two stops and firmly planting himself in the middle of the trenches, refusing to be moved. DT Jarron Jones had limited snaps but made more of an impact in the passing game, where he was able to break down some Texas pass protectors. DE Jerry Tillery had a good game with six tackles and three run stops, but his game was marred with three missed tackles. S Devin Studstill was all over the field, involved in plays totaling seven tackles, one assist, and two run stops.

In his first game he has been rated better than Redfield in any game of the 2015 season. He had the best grade of any player on the back seven.

Been saying it since spring ball, all the fine print said this kid was going to play a significant role this year. With Max gone and Avery sucking, it's Devin's time to shine. I have big hopes for this kid's career as a whole. I think he's going to be great.

The Irish D is going to struggle with any team that has a decent line for QB protection and a pretty decent passing attack. Our secondary appears to be our achilles heel watching all the over the top throws even from the young QB's from Texas.
