Incredible. Where are the people that said Kelly was incapable of developing a QB? Or that everyone regressed under him? It'd be nice to see those posters publicly eat some crow.

TBF, regression has happened in season 2 more frequently than not. So we would need to see next year how it goes.

It's gonna be a moot point, because Phil J is gonna win the job. We'll judge after THAT.

When it becomes the norm as opposed to the exception, we'll revisit the discussion.

Well, to be fair they are probably watching tape from Kelly's first 8 1/4 years here. Obviously, the QB position hasn't been all bad under Kelly but definitely inconsistent and often underwhelming.

Not gonna lie, that's actually a pretty good idea. There are some coaches that have shown repeatedly that they know how to spot exactly what you need in a QB.

Based on a quick web search it seems accuracy would be the number one attribute. Makes sense.

“The other thing is, you can go grab a shortstop and teach him to play quarterback easier than you can make someone accurate.” - Mike Leach

He also talked about how coaches often get too enamored with “athleticism” and trying to “coach” accuracy.

I think it has had to do more with focusing on the physical traits when recruiting the QB when the mental aspect is just as important.

No joke, I watched some of Wazzu's game after ours and kinda liked their kid at QB. Not bad

Do y'all remember when people were mad for taking Book thinking it would push Hunter Johnson away?

Yikes. I hope I never mis-typed those words. I KNOW I've questioned/complained about ND taking him and Davis back to back but I called Davis getting moved before he ever played QB so no biggie there.

A couple of positives that always stuck with me is Steve Buerlein comparing him and his accuracy to Drew Brees which so far has been prophetic.

The other thing is during his Senior year, his coach changed up the offense to where Book would be used in a more ND type of scheme and he went for 70+% (from 60ish) had 3000+ yds, 30+ TD's and less than 5 Ints. He also ran for 700 yds (up from basically nothing) and a bunch of TD's.

For those of us who questioned his height, we should all be happy he's only 6-0 afterall.
If he was 6-4, he might be the #1 player in the '19 draft.

During his radio program, did I hear Coach Brian Kelly allude to the possibility of getting Wimbush involved in the running game later on in the season?
Yes I did.
He said Wimbush would be one of our best running backs.
Also, go Book.

Yup.
I, along with a few other posters said we'd like to see this.... and we got pelted with tomatoes. Just him being on the field at the same time as Book would freak out a lot of DCs. We could have a flea flicker flicker.

Saw this. BK/Long seem to get too cute after the 1st drive and through the second Q.... then they get back to basics to start the 3Q after the cuteness wears off.

Even at 68.2 in his worst Q is pretty damn good lol.
I just happy that Book has been so convincing overall. It would have been a painful year if folks were still trying to cling to BW as the starter.

Yep, I was one of the ones getting pelted with tomatoes.

The interesting part about what BK said was that he wasn't in a position to use Wimbush that way (he otherwise would have) because he needed to be back up QB, but he seemed to be suggesting that may no longer be the case in a few weeks (he may not be needed as back up). So I was wondering if this meant Jurkovic has stepped up or whether they could use Jurkovic as the backup without burning his red shirt.

I would agree. The biggest disparity is 12 touchdowns in the second half vs 3 in the first half. Book has been very good the last two games in terms of QBR and hopefully continues to ascend, as BK would say. I wish he would have started the first three games. I think Ball State and Vanderbilt at least would have looked a lot different.

PJ wasn't getting reps (when the change happened), and that could have changed the last 6 games giving BK a bit of confidence. BW also needed time to learn a new position, and that could have happened. There's also the matter of PJ not blowing his RS. He's played in one game.

If PJ is in a position to be the back up, and BW is in a position to be a non-QB weapon, and BK doesn't want to blow a RS for PJ, then we might see BW be let loose vs USC.

All the stuff about BW not being fast or athletic enough, not being able to learn another position, and it being to risky to use him as anything but a back up, are all just opinions and/or matters of timing. They've had 7 weeks to prep, learn, and get ready if that's the direction they want to go.

IF BK thinks BW can be successful at another position, it would actually be the best thing for BW, and for his chances of playing past college. And if successful, could be enough to keep BW in South Bend next year.

Not saying any of it will happen, but it's obvious BK has some interest in that direction.

I wish he would have started earlier as well, but I think things had to play out the way they did. There would have been blow back had he started vs scUM, or the following two games. IMO the games played out in a way that made the attitudes about the transition more palatable for all.

Regarding the per Q performance, I think it's more a product of play calling than anything else. I think BK calls high percentage plays to start the game, then tries to go deeper in the play book and attempt to do things that he's trying to work on and improve at. I'm all for trying to keep the D honest, but the late 1Q, and 2Q play calling (passing) need to stay higher percentage as we play tougher opponents. I expect him to be cute again at home vs FSU, I just hope he goes more high percentage vs Syracuse and on the road vs USC. In the running game, I think it almost just the opposite. I'd like to see him get more "cute" with runs to the perimeter and some trickeration.

Book is getting better at the longer balls. I just think those longer plays would work better in the 2H sporadically once the D is frustrated by all the accurate short and intermediate throws. Let him get a 2 score lead before we get too creative in the passing game. And I'd be happy if I never saw another 10:30 intermediate shot into coverage... Keep it between 9 and 10 on the left sideline, and 11 and 3 on the middle right.

Really? You have to be kidding me. BK better explain this. Is he really that hurt?

This is stupid if u ask me why are we just hearing about this now? And not Tuesday

Why, so you would have two extra days to worry? BK may have a set a certain day as his deadline for Book to show he could practice and play and he moves forward from there.

At least we're not putting in an inexperienced QB. Wimbush's ability to run should help against the athletic FSU D.

There could be a couple reasons why this wasn't mentioned on Tuesday

-No one asked, so why mention it.
-On Tuesday, maybe they weren't 100% certain he'd be out for the game
-And the most important one, why the hell would they want to give FSU extra time to prepare for a QB that is a total 180 from what Book is. FSU's entire defensive game plan just got trashed with 48 hours until kickoff.

Its unfortunate, as now I think this game might be more of a dog fight. On the bright side, the weather might be such a big factor that none of this will matter.

Did you watch the NW game? He got hurt on a third down play and IIRC correctly BK was going for it on fourth down and called a TO so Book could have a couple of minutes to recover.

Looks like this is the thread everyone will be meeting in today and tomorrow.

You don't "rest" your starting QB when you are 9-0 and have a shot to make the playoff. You rest him in the 4th quarter if you are up by 30.
