Top Notre Dame QB recruit Barnett Decommits - South Bend Tribune: Football

One prime choice who recently landed elsewhere was Texas standout Kyler Murray, who last week committed to Texas A&M. In fact, CBS Sports Network analyst Tom Lemming believes that Murray's commitment to the Aggies could have affected Barnett's situation with ND. Murray, according to Lemming, was high on Oregon's wish list.

"I think (Barnett) is mesmerized by Oregon," Lemming said. "Oregon didn't make a major push on him until after losing Murray."

And now Notre Dame begins the push for others.

Two uncommitted players that Lemming identified are Calfornians Travis Waller of Anaheim Servite and Sheriron Jones of Moreno Valley Rancho Verde.

"Both have grades. Both are athletes," Lemming said.

The quest, however, likely won't end with uncommitted prospects.

"Go after other people's guys," Lemming said. "I think that's the smart thing to do."

Golson just a few years ago was an early North Carolina commit before flipping late in the process, and there are a number of committed QBs that Lemming identified as fits. Among them:

Brandon Wimbush of St. Peter's Prep in New Jersey. Wimbush is committed to Penn State.

Brady White of Newhall, Calif. White is committed to Arizona State.

Lorenzo Nunez of Georgia, who has pledged South Carolina.

Two other intriguing options are Texans Chad President and Blake Lynch, both of whom are committed to Baylor. President is listed as a quarterback on Rivals.com's Baylor commit list while Lynch, a high school QB, is listed as an athlete who projects as a wide receiver or defensive back with the Bears.

"They're both outstanding quarterbacks who could fit in perfectly at Notre Dame," Lemming said.

Anyone know if Waller is OSU's #1 target?

They told him he is.....

Yet they haven't offered and just offered and accepted a commitment from in in-state QB.

They're evaluating him still and he's supposed to hear back soon from them....

Yet he's their #1 QB somehow...

Damn, on paper, sounds like with Blake going to Oregon and OSU just picking him up, Waller could fall nicely into ND's lap.

Waller has 'warmer' for OSU and Oregon, no one else.

Bama also just offered a QB that is expected to jump on the offer. Waller was a real possibility for them.

3 QBs Loy thinks ND will make a run at:

Travis Waller
Deondre Francois
Lamar Jackson

I'm that guy who just got dumped by 'the one' so I'm out whoring it up at the bars, trying to pretend like all is well and there are other fish in the sea.

So I watched 2 mins of each of their films, and they all look the same to me. If ND told me I could have any of the three, I wouldn't know who to pick. I think it's clear Jackson is the best runner, but that's all I can determine.

Can someone who actually knows what they're doing give us your thoughts on the pecking order here?

Patiently waiting for some sort of new '15 QB offer. Unless they're going to go after one already offered.

Just go with your gut Koon. Watch all thre films again, and write down the first NFL/Hall-of-Fame comparison that comes to mind. Go with whichever NFL comparison excites you the most.

This is random but somewhat pertains. Over at Scout Tim O'Malley wrote a quick article discussing 3 enrolled recruiting classes (2010-2012) top 10 QBs ranked by Scout.com, 24/7, Rivals, and ESPN. He was commenting on who knows if Blake would have blossomed or not and trying give give perspective.

2010 Class - 8 of 10 transferred and no one has done anyone really
2011 Class - 5 transfers, 1 playing baseball and 3 great players (Miller, Bridgewater, Hundley)
2012 Class - 6 transfers, 1 on mission, 1 dismissed, and Winston

Jarrett Stidham--currently committed to TT

OVERALL TRAITS
Size-Strength-Mobility
Tall and wiry. Has yet to grow into his frame. Very flexible player. Shows significant physical development upside. He's a really good athlete overall. Can be utilized as a designated runner or an improviser when things break down. Possesses very good speed for the position.
Mental-Makeup
Highly competitive. Has a nice feel for the game. Shows the ability to pull a rabbit out of hat and keep his poise when things break down. Has a nice presence within the pocket. Shows the ability to track targets and move through progressions. However, at times he will leave the pocket too soon and rely on his feet and athleticism.
Accuracy
Flashes excellent accuracy to all three levels of the field, but not always consistent. Needs to hit the strikezone in a manner that allows for targets to consistently transition upfield with ease. There are moments as a passer on the move where he shows rare accuracy when off balance or across his body. He can make the difficult look easy and fit the ball into tight spots.
Release/Arm Strength
His release is one of his best physical attributes. He has a smooth, fluid and effortless stroke. Ball comes out quickly. You can't coach his delivery. Arm has zip and RPMs with the strength to drive the ball downfield or make throws outside of the numbers. Can make some throws when on the move that are very difficult.
Bottom Line
Stidham reminds us of Derek Carr as a passer and Marcus Mariota as a runner. He is only going to get bigger and better with more experience. He's the type of player that can fit into any scheme and add the dimension of a constant running threat. He is extremely attractive because there is a high ceiling for development.
Junior Eval
STRENGTHS: Nice measurables and impressive athleticism for a skill prospect. Possesses good height and a muscular, well-built frame. Shows surge off the line to create separation as a receiver. Not afraid to go over the middle and catch in traffic. Has good hands and can extend and catch on the run. Possesses raw arm strength as a passer and flashes some underneath zip. ... AREAS OF IMPROVEMENT: Needs to improve speed and develop overall playing strength for the next level as a skill prospect. Lacks suddenness and change-of-direction burst to create big plays after the catch. Not a natural pass catcher and tends to fight the ball at times. Still developing as a route runner. Lacks experience as a QB. ... BOTTOM LINE: Stidham is a versatile athlete who will benefit from improved playing strength and speed and refined throwing mechanics if recruited to play QB.

Here is a question, I often wonder this when we get key de-commits (usually from the defensive front seven, but it still applies to QB this year)...

Why doesn't the staff throw four/five offers at the four/five best fits left out there and let it be known they'll take the first 1/2 that jump on board?

Why not offer White, Jackson, Waller and Co. Instead of just offering the TTech kid... if he doesn't work out you just lose precious time with the other three or four you didn't offer...

They never seem to approach it this way so I'm sure there must be a good reason but I must not seem to grasp it.

Maybe they just don't feel as desperate to to land a QB this cycle as some of us; or at least not just a warm body. I'm.OK with that.

Didn't Kelly say four qb's on scholarship was a bit much? And don't we have BVG's kid Montgomery as a preferred walk-on for number four? And aren't we in the mix for Jacob Easton? What would be the point of pursuing someone in '15?

Honestly, there are very few can't miss HS QB's... it's rare you find a Winston type in HS for example...

to me, they are both rated among the top DT QB's in the country... both top five correct???

I say take the one that wants to be here.

IMO:

Stidham
Barnett

Waller

As of right now I go

Barnett
Stidham

Waller

I just think Stidham isn't quite where Barnett is at yet with the whole package. We can be pissed at Barnett all we want (I certainly am) but he is putting in insane work. He'll be starting day 1 in Eugene thats one of selling points I'm sure. Stidham has just am much upside but not as immediately prepared.

Isn't Barnett one of the lower rated guys in this whole discussion? Why all the faith that he'll be ranked highest and be the cream of the group??

Can one of you guys with a 247 subscription ask why he is rated so high. Honestly from his tape I think he should be around #200 not #50 overall

Notre Dame goes to plan B for quarterback recruiting - South Bend Tribune: Football

Notre Dame didn’t wait long in identifying new options at quarterback.
A day after losing a verbal commitment from 2015 quarterback Blake Barnett, the Irish extended a pair of offers to signal-callers in the class.
The first came to Travis Waller, a four-star prospect from Anaheim, Calif., who reported the offer on Twitter. 247Sports slates him as the No. 2 dual-threat quarterback in the country and No. 36 overall. Rivals ranks him as the No. 5 dual-threat quarterback and No. 104 regardless of his position.
Waller attends Servite, the same Catholic high school as recent Irish tight end Troy Niklas. As a junior, Waller completed 127 of his 235 passes for 1,669 yards for 12 touchdowns. He also rushed 171 times for 1,293 yards and 13 touchdowns. Waller holds offers from Alabama, California, Tennessee and Northwestern, among others.
The Irish could receive a visit from Waller as soon as this month, said quarterback coach Steve Clarkson. Clarkson, who worked with former Irish quarterback Jimmy Clausen and other current NFL quarterbacks Ben Roethlisberger and Nick Foles, recently coached Waller at Clarkson’s annual San Diego Quarterback Retreat in May. He said he expects Waller to make a commitment decision in the next few weeks.
Servite wide receiver Equanimeous St. Brown, a teammate of Waller’s, plans to visit Notre Dame next week. Landing one could help influence the other to join the Irish.
The second offer went to Jarrett Stidham, a four-star Texas Tech commit from Stephenville, Texas, who also shared the news on Twitter. Rivals ranks him as the No. 1 dual-threat quarterback in the 2015 class and No. 50 nationally regardless of position. 247Sports slates him as the No. 3 dual-threat quarterback in the country and No. 65 overall.
As a junior at Stephenville High, Stidham completed 160 of his 268 passes for 2,687 yards for 30 touchdowns. He rushed 143 times for 975 yards and 16 touchdowns. Stidham, who also held offers from Alabama, Auburn, Ohio State and Texas A&M, verbally committed to Texas Tech in March.
Rivals and 247Sports both reported the Irish contacting IMG Academy’s Deondre Francois, but an offer had yet to be made prior to Thursday night. Francois, a four-star prospect at the Bradenton, Fla., school, is considered a Florida State lean by most. His offer list also includes Auburn, Florida and Ohio State.
As a junior, Francois completed 104 of his 213 passes for 1,373 yards and 19 touchdowns. He’s ranked as the No. 8 dual-threat quarterback in the country according to both Rivals and 247Sports.
Waller, Stidham and Francois all received one of the 18 invites to July’s Elite 11 finals, a national quarterback competition, alongside Barnett. The Irish have signed an Elite 11 finalist (Everett Golson, Gunner Kiel, Malik Zaire and DeShone Kizer) each of the last four recruiting cycles.

So quick note on Kendall Hinton. I don't know if he's actually on the staff's radar at all... he's really undersized, but BY FAR the most prolific thrower of the football of any of the dudes that have popped up on the board the last few days. Has very Bridgewater-esque film and has a giant highlight tape of him just slinging it all over the yard.

I think he'd be a great add if we end up out of the running for the premium QBs we're currently looking at, and I hope the staff notices him.

Jr Year Highlight - Kendall Hinton highlights

Seriously... grab yourself a tall drink, watch those highlights, and then go watch the other QBs we're looking at. It's not even close. Hinton is dropping 50 yard dimes all over the field to WRs in stride.

I didn't make it through the whole tape because it is quite long, but damn he has a VERY impressive arm. I'm not sure how a pro-style QB with his height would work in our system, but he has a cannon and puts it right on the mark. Apparently he also threw for 39 TDs and just under 4000 yards last year. Does anyone know about his competition?

I only watched the first 6 minutes and didn't see much of him running, but he apparently got into the endzone 13 times with his legs last year so he must have some decent mobility. Wouldn't mind having him on the radar in case we miss out on the big names. LAX was right, his arm is way ahead of the other guys we offered recently.

If I really wanted to get ahead of myself, I'd also say that bringing in a guy with less of a dual-threat reputation could help assure Eason that we'll call plays to his skill set.

Yeah, his highlight video is LONG. From the 7 minute mark to the 10 minute mark is actually where he makes all the plays with his legs. He's no Denard Robinson, but he has very decent athleticism. Really reminds me of Bridgewater.

H/T to TP for finding this gem. Right now he has mostly regional DI offers (NC State, Duke, etc.) and could be the next Russell Wilson flying under the radar.
