I know a lot of people, including me, want Kelly to establish the running game. But this staff has landed a lot of receivers this year that have a very good chance at being really good in college. With ESB, Alize, Miles, Guyton (don't forget about him), and CJ it's going to be really interesting how BK handles this. I wouldn't mind seeing 5 receiver sets cause you can't leave these guys on the bench.

Fuller, Robinson, ESB, Boykin, and CJ all on the field at the same time. How do you even defend that?

That route running is dirty. Think I like him more than ESB.

I've always been really high on Boykin, much higher than most. He lacks elite top end speed but he's beefy and athletic... should, at minimum, completely dominate as a blocker.

And that's the thing about committing to the run. With smaller/explosive WRs, I understand why you wouldn't. But if you have monsters on the perimeter plus someone like CJ Prosise who is BIG for a WR in the slot or use two TEs with Luatua it makes it very easy to pound the ball on the ground and then hit a big pass play over the top to a beat up corner or cheating safety.

I agree that he is unexpectedly evasive for his size and his senior film looks great, but his competition is not in the same league as Alize's.

Boykin's team played a tough schedule this year and won a state title. He's playing against top notch high school teams in that film.

He could be playing top notch high schools and it still wouldn't compare to Bishop Gorman's schedule.

They played Centennial (CA), John Bosco (CA), and Bingham (UT).

Idk if there is another team that has 3 Top 25 teams on their schedule.

He has a chance to play next year. Don't really think we need him to, but he looks ready to see a college football field.

I don't think he has a shot. Justin Brent came in physically prepared to contribute and couldn't crack the line-up. Now the roster is stocked, I can't imagine who he'd displace. He'll be a player for us but it'll take time for him to get acclimated to the level of competition.

Justin Brent may have been physically ready, but he wasn't mentally. Boykin could be different.

Boykin looks to have refined parts of his game. I wasn't speaking just phystically.

This. U can tell boykin has spent some time with someone who understands the we position.

Unfortunately for Brent, he spent his entire has career as mr. everything. That's takes a lot of time away from working on a craft.

I've been very high on Miles as well. His route running and stride i just so smooth and he catches the ball very well with his hands. I think he's going to be a monster for ND in the future. Not sure about next year, but soon.

Geez hope this isn't the case with Brent...somebody needs to "get to him" to get him serious about his craft. Boykin is going to be a nightmare for a small DB.

"I think people are buying way too much into that whole issue (myself included for a while). Brent should be on the right track, but it's a loaded group right now and Brent's WR knowledge is far less than practically everybody ahead of him now.

When looking at WRs, I prefer the camp film over the field film. Here's a Chicago camp with some one on ones (competition isn't good). Mkyelti Williams 1-1 with Boykin for a few reps starting at 20 seconds.

Not much of a sample size, but Mykelti looked like a beast against Boykin.

Good video Koon.

After Mykelti broke the pass up on Miles, he beat an Indiana commit named Leon Thornton with a pretty good break on the ball. The QB play leaves a little to be desired though.

At 1:07, Miles breaks Aaron Garland ankles on a slant (UCONN commit)

The white kid Nagel (Duke commit) is pretty impressive.

Your logic here confounds me. Why is it you like looking at camp film over game film?

I would have imagined it was the raised competition level, but if you say the competition isn't good...

It's man on man vs. guys looking to get offers. No worry about zones, over the top help, pass rush, etc. It's the best way to evaluate WRs IMO.

No, this particular camp didn't have great competition, but it's relative. Meaning it's still better than the average HS corner in game film.

the best film to evaluate wr play is endzone tape. Which you rarely see.

Does he properly stem the db on his routes. Were his feet under him on his cuts. do his arms give his cuts away?

Side film may show you how fast a kid is. But that isnt the name of the game 95% of the time.

Boykins full stride seems effortless. He was easily the most talented guy in that video.

Mykelti seemed pretty solid in coverage. But I don't think we will ever see him playing man like that.

Now that's the type of response I was hoping for, good post Koon.

Putting a big, physical receiver like Boykin with a speedster a la Fuller is a nightmare for defenses. Boykin will probably make a living on the intermediate routes, while a big body like that can block on bubble screens. But the WR's can't try to jump the short routes because eventually the go route will burn them. No good options for the defense.

Kelly Visits Boykin

Miles Boykin didn’t need to be convinced of anything Sunday over dinner.

Head coach Brian Kelly and offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock joined Boykin and his family to talk Notre Dame, which has held a commitment from the four-star wide receiver since July 2. Conducting the in-home visit was more preparation for National Signing Day than recruiting pitch as a result.

“It was just really cool seeing the people side of them instead of the coaching side for a change,” Boykin said. “I think that was the biggest thing for my family. I was at my grandma’s house, so coach Kelly and coach Denbrock got to meet my mom and dad and my brother and my grandpa.”

Topics of discussion ranged from what Boykin can expect in the classroom, how the Irish might finish off recruiting in the next week and the ribs being served for dinner.

Kelly and Denbrock also filled in the 6-foot-4, 220-pound prospect on the environment he’ll step into this summer upon enrollment. Boykin will be part of a veteran receiver room that includes Chris Brown, Will Fuller, Corey Robinson, C.J. Prosise and Amir Carlisle.

“Just the atmosphere and the type of players I’ll be around,” Boykin said. “The type of leaders I’ll be around. No one really gets left behind. It’s not like a clique team where certain kids only hang out with certain kids. The whole team kinda goes out as a whole when we do things.”

How Boykin fits into that mix remains an open question to the coaching staff.

Fuller crossed the 1,000-yard mark last season while Robinson, Carlisle, Brown and Prosise all topped 20 receptions.

Torii Hunter Jr., Justin Brent and Corey Holmes are also expected to move into more prominent roles with another year of experience under their belts.

“It was kinda mutual on both ends on how we talked,” Boykin said. “Probably the biggest and most important question my mom asked coach Kelly was if he thinks I’m gonna redshirt. He said it’s gonna be a tough decision and a tough call because they think I’m ready physically. It’ll come down to how I learn the offense and how I am in the red zone. He said if I’m gonna be a threat to score they have to look at that right away.”

Right now Boykin is part of a three-receiver recruiting haul that includes Jalen Guyton and C.J. Sanders pending the National Signing Day announcement of four-star prospect Equanimeous St. Brown. Five-star tight end Alize Jones joined the fold earlier this month.

Boykin doesn’t have strong feelings one way or another about the possibility of redshirting.
“I’m kinda indifferent about it,” he said. “Obviously, my goal is to go in there and play right away. But at the same time if I redshirt, it’s not that big a deal to me because I’m gonna go into the business school and I should be on track to graduate in three and a half years. If I’m redshirted then hopefully I’m able to get a master’s degree.”

Love seeing the last part

Boom.

My red zone 5 wide:

CRob, ESB, Boykin, Luatua, Jones.

Offensive audible.

Luatua and Jones come inside, doubletight.

QB designed run play suspected.

Then Golson or Malik yells, "500, 500."

He throws it straight up in the air. A mile damn high.

Irish touchdown.
