This is what needs to happen. The freshman DB's need to play, as well as Daelin and Jay Hayes. We basically played 5 DL last night with a couple of appearances from Bonner.

You can't bring in pass rush specialists when Texas was playing at that tempo... When they were gashing us with the run, we had to keep in our best rush defenders... I expect it to be much different against MSU

I was referring to the fact that we got worn down not the pass rush. Even when we rotated is was only Cage or Bonner coming in. We had the same problem last year...we have to play more bodies up front. I just want a lot of decisions Kelly makes to be different

Is defensive line rotation Kelly's calls? Or is BVG and the DL coach who makes the calls
Serious question, because I don't know.

The delusion behind BVG is what has me worried. He's probably a very smart guy just no longer a good coach. BK's statement have a sense of stubbornness behind them and I'm not sure this is the guy you need to out your foot down for.

Was this from the teleconference? I've been searching around for a link or transcript.

As a head coach, you have to stand up for your staff. You can publicly state things, but throwing coaches out to dry isn't a good look for a head coach nor the program.

What happens behind closed doors is another thing, but what benefit does anyone get with Kelly degrading to the public.

In that game, it's tough to sub. You don't want to have Daelin Hayes and Kareem stuck out there at the same time for multiple plays. People would be complaining about why they were out there.

I realize that, not looking for him to bus drive his staff but there should definitely be pressure.

You don't have to specific just our defense wasn't acceptable.

I did hear Kelly say they didn't coach well so he did make a generic statement.

I'll edit my response some now that I've read the entire transcript, he did go into some detail about needing to coach better on the defensive side of the ball.

It's posted in the Texas thread. I haven't found the audio yet. When one of the ND official channels uploads it I'll put it with the transcript in the Texas thread.

This is exactly right...what are ND fans looking for an absolute dumpster fire?! The job of a head coach is to stay calm and show a united front. If he starts throwing people under the bus directly who'd ever come work under him? What recruits would want to come play for him? I thought he's handled this loss perfectly, he stated its not acceptable and all coaches need to coach better. Well said, no more needs to be said. Like TP said what happens behind closed doors is where that other stuff needs to stay!

Publicly stating your DC is a great coach after a performance like last night isn't standing up for your staff, it's stupid. There are plenty of other ways to word it and stick up for the guy without complimenting him. Unless I missed it somewhere, Kelly has now complimented BVG more after last nights shit show than the QB who lit the world on fire. It's pathetic

Anyway, Dru Tranquill.
TBH, I've never thought he was much more than a thumper to bring in for the Navies of the world, and an oft-injured one at that. Circumstances made him our starting strong safety, but was hard to see that sticking. If Sebastian moves over to strong and Studstill to FS with Tranquill playing in running situations, that'd be fine.

Whatever. Kelly says what he thinks he needs to say at press conferences. I tend to think what he says behind closed doors is quite different.

I think that is what's going to happen. Except Drue will also be in on passing downs to blitz. Also expect to see Jalen Eliot get a lot of PT also.

But in every game last year we had the same issue. Gilmore mentioned it in fall camp saying they only played 6 guys (he said he wanted at least an eight man rotation) and players like Rochell and Day played an average of 65-70 snaps. That's too many for the trenches, they're gonna wear down. It results in holes opening because guys can't get off blocks and lack of pressure because you're fatigued. We have to split reps more equally along the line in the future.
As far as Drue...he struggled but coming off two ACL surgeries we knew there would be set backs. A lot of the guys like Jarron Jones, Joe Schmidt, Jarrett Grace, and even Folston and Zaire haven't looked the same since their leg injuries.

Good for him! Is that the same girl that he has been dating ever since he got to Notre Dame?

We could use more guys like Drue on this team.

Good for Drue.

Pete Sampson on II's podcast has been saying since spring that the staff expects great things from Drue this year. The words NFL and All American were thrown out. That would be so awesome

Yes, it's the same girl.

Yes we do. This is the type of prospect I expect Elko and Lea to find more of. We'll see.
