you guys being all critical of a PWO's size, speed, competition etc just make me laugh.

he's a PWO for goodness sakes...its like landing on "free spin" in "recruiting wheel of fortune". zero risk, all upside.

Debate over his 40 time aside... I want to know if that vertical is accurate? He has good size, excellent speed and (if accurate) a three foot vertical!

An intriguing pwo, indeed!

I can't stand watching him throw, but I definitely enjoy watching him run.

kind of in the same boat

few things i got from those highlights were:

his O line is not very good

highlights are from his sophomore year so hopefully he's put on 30 pounds
throwing is pretty weak, but he'll be a good scout team QB for navy, air force, army weeks....perhaps Ga tech in certain years

thought #25 was a pretty good small high school WR

coached a small school WR 3 years ago with the same dimensions, perhaps a bit shorter, he went to a combine when he was getting recruited and had a 33" vertical.

i'm not as skeptical

Yeah that type of vertical is definitely realistic. We trained in high school with these type of bungie cords that hooked up to you and i got my vertical up to 34. Our testing of it wasnt that great so it probly wasnt perfectly accurate but if i got my jump right i could barely dunk and im like 5'9-5'10 haha.

that would be called the "vertimax"

Not to be "that guy" but someone who runs a 10.7 does not run a 4.34.... one of these times is inaccurate.

I agree technically, but...

1) Apples to apples. Everyone is reporting hand-timed 40s, not laser-timed. Unless the kid is lying, I think what we learn is that the kid is really fast. 4.3 fast? Very doubtful, but fast compared to other kids who are getting hand-timed.

2) 10.72 is REALLY, REALLY fast for a high school kid. Olympic fast. No, but excellent. Makes me believe that he was legitimately HAND-TIMED at 4.3+. Those two are compatible to me. I doubt the 40 was well-timed, though.

3) The clock starts in the 100m when the gun goes off, not when you start moving--that is very different. The 40m x 2.5 is not a 100m equivalent. For example:

"Jacoby Ford, who ran a 4.28 s in the 2010 NFL Combine, had a collegiate best of 6.51 s in the 60-meter dash (outside the top-40 of the all-time lists). Justin Gatlin was significantly slower at the NFL Combine, achieving a 40-yard dash best of 4.42 s, but holds the fifth fastest 60-meter dash ever with 6.45 seconds. This highlights the difficulties in comparing track running times to football 40-yard times due to the different timing methods."

4) Skinny kids have a harder time coming out of the blocks and generating power throughout the 100.

So why didn't we hear about him? Probably a good but not great football player from a terrible Iowa league 2A. His competition is SLOW.

I would not be shocked if we got a kid with excellent speed who is just not a sure-fire D1 prospect.

He is walking on as a DB at ND.

ND has 3 solid guys coming in as preferred walk-ons to date.

Grant is currently on his "official" visit at ND this weekend.

Clips of him looking pretty darn good at the ND camp, as well as him running various routes and being timed in 2 40 yard dashes.

10.7 FAT timed is definitely fast... it's absolutely not even close to Olympic level fast though. Like, not even in the same universe as Olympic level sprinters. For reference, GAIII ran a 10.66 in HS and Bennett Jackson ran a 10.8... neither of those guys were considered Olympic level sprinters. Darby ran a 10.41 and a 21.05 for the 200... and his 21.05 was borderline Olympic hopeful.

I understand all the nuances of track timing. I ran indoor track very competitively in HS and specialized in the 55m. I know that you can't even really compare and contrast between a 40 (where the run is in large part acceleration) and the 100 (where the run is in large part sustained top end speed)... but all I'm saying is if you're legitimately running a sub-4.4 (which is BEYOND rare for a high schooler...) then you're not running 10.7s. I can't conceive of an athlete that would legitimately post those two times. Most likely, he's much more of a 4.5-4.6 type of guy... which is still very fast. In fact, I'm seeing it reported in my Google searches that he runs a 4.49 which I wouldn't doubt at all... and is blazing fast for a HS guy.

Of course. I know the area and I know the school. It's just worth noting that he looks really fast in part because he's next to a bunch of people who aren't. But the numbers don't lie. 10.7 electronic is quick.

I love the pick up.

From a purely PWO perspective, uber excited about this guy. A ton of upside and potential. And, no risk. Would love to see him speeding down the field on KOs and putting a lickin' on a returner. If he can translate into a contributing DB or WR, all the better. Very happy with just the fact he comes from a football family and seems to be a good person in general.

I left one thing out of the Hammann family tome, I found conflicting school info. YJ's article and the recruiting services profiles have him at Beckman HS. NCSA lists his school as Beckman Catholic under the 2014 Class. NCSA lists Derek Hammann's school in the class of 2012 as Beckman Catholic.

Grant Hammann's Football Recruiting Profile

As long as ND Admissions (and the NCAA Eligibilty Center) knows where he went to school ...

EDIT:

Grant goes to Beckman Catholic HS not Beckman HS. There are two high schools in Dyerville. Beckman Catholic HS's colors are Green and Gold. If you click on the LINK in Coach Gregg Hammann's Wiki it takes you to the Beckman Catholic HS Wiki page even though the link in Gregg's write up says "Beckman High".

This is a small school with 317 Co-Ed Students which explains the caliber of competition.

Umm...there arent two high schools in Dyersville....there is only one.

Not to be "that guy"....but Hammann is a fast kid and i def see him being able to compete for a spot on Special Teams. But there is a significant difference in speed in the video posted earlier of his 100m and this one. I do not buy he is a tenth of second faster than Darby in the rain going into a head wind.

Not taking away from him as an athlete, bc these are just the kids that ND needs to lock up as a PWO's. The smaller school star, that has a great work ethic is what ND needs to be able to push guys in practice. And these guys do have a shot to get on Sp Teams at some point, but ND has needed this for a long time, its great to see.

That's true. Kids in Dyersville who don't go to Beckman end up at Western Dubuque HS in Farley or Cascade HS.

That area is known for outstanding baseball, but not necessarily football.
