If we were adding anymore, he would not say a number at all. It's not like he was asked how many players will be in the class, he said it on his own.

Again, that's out of context. He said that our current 23 man class is built around the lines.

I see 'current' no where in the tweet. If you saw another tweet that includes that, please share.

hes 1st team all state in texas -- i dont think 5 star potential is really drinking the kool aid

Hill was 1st-team all-state for his division. 4A is still extremely competitive in Texas, but you've got to consider the all-state team for 5A as well. So, you can make a case that Hill is probably one of the best 44 players in Texas, but even then, those all-star teams have positional limitations, so it's not a perfect measurement. There are only 30-35 5:s: prospects in the entire nation each year.

Like a lot of guys in this class, Hill's a high character kid with a very high ceiling. Could be very productive in college; maybe even All-American level. But a 1st round draft pick? Probably not, given his physical profile.

Dude, it's a freaking tweet. I'm watching the presser and have the context of the statement. He basically that we currently have 23 guys with a focus on the lines. There was no implicit statement on Quick or JuJu.

I don't necessarily think we will get either of them. But BK certainly didn't say our class is done.

quit making sense. Sure Kolin Hill is gonna wreck sh1t up but I don't see any 5 star traits but he is going to be a good player for us.

Two things:

1) I would say that Lynch definitely proved himself as a pass rusher. Kid is a very good pass rusher. His results were limited at ND, so if we are talking "productive for ND", but he is definitely a proven pass rusher.

2) People "expect" recruits to be awesome every year. If you would have asked anyone on here what they thought Ishaq would turn into, pretty much everyone would have said "day 1 NFL talent" on NSD of '11. So it's all hindsight, imo.

What else would we be talking about. And its not like Lynch was incredibly productive at USF. He had 5 sacks last year. Do you think Kelly thinks to himself that he got out of Lynch what they recruited. Obviously no. They would much rather have a guy be consistently productive over 4 years than great for one. The 2011 class wasn't nearly as productive as everybody thought. Your right its hindsight. Hindsight says that the last time we all circle jerked over 5 star Dline talent we didn't get nearly the production that we thought we would or should have.

Don't get all worked up. I'm not watching the live stream, so if you are, next time say so so your argument has credibility. I thought you were just drunk on koool aid and refused to believe the tweet.

Von Miller. Didn't project very well out of HS because it was recruited as a weakside DE not a 3-4 OLB. One of the best pass rusher in the league. Rivals had him as the #15 weakside DE's.

heck of an effort by denbrock, but OU is hot right now with their big win over bama...he'll be good there, plus the pipeline they have in place was much better than ours currently at ND in regards to the Fresno area

So are we going to list every kid that's an exception to prove that Hill will be a first round talent?

What over the last few years makes you think we can compete with the top SEC teams? Sure, we can toast teams like Kentucky, Tennessee, UF and compete well with the middle of the road SEC teams. But last time I checked, Bama wiped the floor with us with the best team we have had under BK. There is no evidence yet that we can compete with the Bama's and LSU's, imo.

Also, Let's not start trying to overplay guys like Mokwuah. Is he a good prospect with an extremely high ceiling?… Sure… but he is also a consensus 3 star that no Tier 1 teams had as a #1 option at DT. Shoot… we didn't even have him as that.

This is a nice class. Filled with depth and kids with high upsides. It clearly lacks star studded talent and will need several prospects to beat national expectations for them in order to be considered a success down the road. I give it a B.

I'd say it's a little early to be handing out grades to a recruiting class. You've gotta wait a good 2-3 years before you can really pass judgement. For instance, looking at a list of the top 50 draft prospects this year and where they were rated coming out of HS there are about 20 guys who are 2 & 3 stars.
Recruiting profiles of top 50 prospects in 2014 NFL Draft - NFL.com
3 of which are DTs, which seems to point to the fact that DT is one of the hardest positions to project and success there comes from good coaching and development to realize potential (Hello Cage, Mokwuah!). As far as Bama and LSU go at DT: Bama's starting DT was Brandon Ivory (3* - 5.6 rivals rating) and their backup was Darren Lake (3* - 5.6 rivals rating). LSU starting DT's left for the draft, leaving them with starting options for next year of 2 3*'s that were second string this year or one 4*, one 3* true freshman. I'd say at least at the position of DT (in response to your comments about Mokwuah), we're matching up just fine with Bama and LSU. We also match up just fine with them on O-line recruiting. I'm a big believer that your lines are the most important of your team, and we do well comparatively.
Now I'm not trying to start the argument that ratings are irrelevant; clearly being a 5 star gives you a higher % chance of being a high impact player. I'm only suggesting we wait and see in this class. There are plenty of examples just this year in college football of big impact players on great teams. Cameron Erving, Jameis' blindside protector, was a 3* DT. Bradley Roby, one of the best players on OSU's D, was a 3* CB. Dennard, the best player on MSU's top 3 D, was a 2*. Calvin Pryor, the best player on Louisville's D (which finished 2nd in PPG), was a 3*. Chris Borland, the best player on Wisconsin's excellent D, was a low 3*. I think there's a lot of potential in this class, especially in the defensive front seven.

One thing I like is that we're no longer reaching to fill out classes with players who probably shouldn't be getting ND scholarships like we were at the beginning of BK's time here (Heggie, Roback, Tate Nichols, etc.), but instead we're filling out classes with plan B's that have legitimate starter/impact potential. Our talent level on the depth charts is definitely seeing a significant rise, as evidenced by the way our young guys played this year when we had all those O-line & D-line injuries.

i understand and 5:s: that dont produce/flame out... if his hands/feet/speed are as legit as they are on his film, it will be very difficult to keep a sack monster out of the 1st rd

I disagree with this statement. Hindsight is always 20/20. You have to make judgements / grade each class with the information we know now.

Haha, no I was just having some fun. I don't think he's a first round talent but very similar traits and similar prospects. Who knows if he develops like Miller did but I like our staff and I love his upside.

No doubt. But the services generally hand out a 5th :s: to those few recruits who project well as 1st round draft picks. So what standard are we going to use? "5:s: potential" is pretty ambiguous, as a 5:s:s are projections based on physical profile and high school production anyway. It's probably more accurate to say that a lot of our recruits, including the 3:s:s, have All-Conference or even All-American potential.

because that was the justification given by Wooly -- 5:s:s are those who end up 1st rd draft picls... if thats the standard he chooses to evaluate a class then all you can do is talk potential

it also defeats the argument that just because someone is a 4:s: or 3:s:, it means they are depth players

Just to clarify, I didn't say that 5 stars are first day draft picks. The questions was asked "how can you judge whether a kid develops into 5 star talent". So we are talking about development of players into their future potential. I used the example of "first day NFL draftee" as a benchmark for a player developing into 5 star talent.
