13 shot in Chicago park, including 3-year-old child - CNN.com

By David Simpson and Tina Burnside
9/20/13

A 3-year-old child was among 13 people hit by gunfire in a park on the South Side of Chicago late Thursday night, police said.

All the victims were alive when transported to various hospitals, deputy fire chief James Mungovan said.

Four of the victims are in critical condition, CNN affiliate WLS-TV reported .

The shooting occurred in Cornell Square Park, where police taped off an outdoor basketball court.

No suspects were in custody late Thursday. A police spokesman said investigators believe the shooting was gang-related.

Gun violence in Chicago was spotlighted in a February speech there by President Barack Obama. The president, whose home is in the city, spoke about the shooting death of 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton just a week after she attended his inauguration ceremony in January.

The FBI's annual crime report this week showed Chicago had 500 homicides in 2012, up from 431 in 2011 and more than any other American city. Chicago officials have said homicides this year are below the 2012 pace.

MSNCS reported the shooting took place at 10:15 pm Wednesday night.

I had the same thought when I first saw the news but no locations were given for the victims such as park, street, or home in bed.

Boy, 3, Among 13 Injured in Chicago Park Shooting - ABC News

By HERBERT G. MCCANN Associated Press

A witness, Julian Harris, told the Chicago Sun-Times that dreadlocked men fired at him from a gray sedan before turning toward Cornell Square Park in Chicago's Back of the Yards neighborhood and firing at people. He said his 3-year-old nephew was wounded in the cheek.

"They hit the light pole next to me, but I ducked down and ran into the house," Harris said. "They've been coming round here looking for people to shoot every night, just gang-banging stuff. It's what they do."

Chicago Fire Department officials said the child was in critical condition. Officials at Mt. Sinai hospital said Friday that the boy was a patient there, but could not provide an update on his condition. Two other victims were also in critical condition. The others were reported in serious to fair condition.

REREAD- He said he was by the light pole when they shot at him, then he ran in the house. They THEN turned to fire at the park. Not sure why we would need to ask the question anyways about a resident being at a local park even though he wasn't. The question that should be asked is who did this and where do we find them. The next question- why isn't there a war on gangs from the federal/state government?

We seriously need to curb stomp these groups because they are becoming more of problem in my opinion. They also are not your home grown local gangs anymore as much as foreigners(salvador, Mexico, etc.) and they have a purpose for banging on the street corner and shooting at crowds in parks. They are slowly taking over the territory and they are ruthless.

Rack em- I'd love to hear your take on why he doesn't know **** about the city? I don't know much about the subject. My friend used to live a few doors down from his residence. It is literally a block from Hyde Park. You don't want to be in Hyde Park for too long, especially at night. No fun in those parts. Not to say he has walked the streets there...just saying.

People are going crazy these days. What would make a person go and open fire in a park where kids play. I know it was at 10 at night but that's just crazy.

No problem, just a bad morning on my end. Didn't mean for it to sound as mean as I just realized that it did. Go Irish!

In regard to the baby in the park at 10. I can't speak for the area where this happened as I know nothing about it. But I can speak as a parent who has a fussy kid and the only thing that calms it down is a walk, at any hour, to get it to rest.

I've taken one of my kids on a drive around the city at 3AM before because he just wouldn't settle down and he enjoyed the car rides. You do what it takes when you are sleep deprived.

Obviously not speaking on behalf of these parents but I can see it.

Plus Moar Guns!

I agree with a poster above about why these gruops aren't being targeted by the feds. I think gangs should be called domestic terrorist groups instead .

Guys,

This city, which I love, is out of control!!!!! There is not a place that is safe/off limits any more. Two weeks ago 3 people were shot sitting outside of a church, people are getting shot in parks, and outside of schools. The CPD is so undermanned its crazy. There seems to be no end in sight. The only reason numbers are down from last year is because we had awful weather in March, April, and May. The worst part is, my students this morning were bragging that they live in the murder capital of the US. Kids don’t understand!!!!! It's my job as an educator to help inform, but the unfortunate thing is you can’t help those that don’t want to be helped. So So Sad:(

The situation in Chicago doesn't get close to the national attention it deserves. It reminds me of a Kanye West lyric from the song "Murder to Excellence", which goes:

"It’s a war going on outside we ain’t safe from
I feel the pain in my city wherever I go
314 soldiers died in Iraq, 509 died in Chicago"

I don't know where that statistic came from or if it's even accurate, but the point is there's a serious problem in one of our nation's great cities and no one seems to be doing anything to address it. Very sad.

The child's uncle, Julian Harris, told the Chicago Sun-Times that dreadlocked men in a gray sedan shot at him Thursday night before turning toward the nearby park and opening fire. He said his nephew was shot in the cheek.

Harris identified the boy to WBBM-TV as Deonta Howard. Relatives told WBBM-TV that Deonta was at the park with his mother.

"They hit the light pole next to me, but I ducked down and ran into the house," Harris told the newspaper. "They've been coming round here looking for people to shoot every night, just gang-banging stuff. It's what they do."

So what's this all about? Did he say something wrong?

I agree with a poster above about why these gruops aren't being targeted by the feds. I think gangs should be called domestic terrorist groups instead .

The tough thing about this is that the feds have done such a good job knocking out the leadership of the most notorious organized street gangs of the '80s and '90s that what's left of the gangs is a decentralized, disorganized mess.

I worked on a case recently in which a member of the Black P Stones from the Uptown area testified against a member of the Black P Stones from the South Side, and when one of the lawyers asked him why he was doing that, his response was: "Ain't the same, really." The North Side Black P Stones don't even consider themselves part of the same gang as the South Side Black P Stones any more.

So the feds did get involved ... Jeff Fort and Larry Hoover are both in the most secure federal prison in the country in Florence, CO. But their people and their descendants are still on the streets wreaking havoc crew by crew. It's an impossible situation. There's just a leaderless mob of gangsters who grew up in a culture of violence and don't know any other way.

The old Chicago street gangs really were like terrorist groups though. Jeff Fort tried to buy rockets from Libya to blow up a police station. Crazy.

This is both right and wrong. The Sun-Times had a recent op/ed on this:

Murder capital? No, crime in Chicago is down - Chicago Sun-Times

What's going on in Chicago is extremely sad, but the media is blowing it out of proportion a bit. I mean crime here is nowhere near as bad as it was at the tail end of the crack epidemic in the early 90's. There are numerous U.S. cities that have higher crime rates, but Chicago is the third-biggest city in the country so we have a higher volume of crimes, plus crime is down in NYC right now, so Chicago looks bad by comparison (not that it isn't), and therefore it gets outsized media attention.

That's not at all to say that crime here isn't a terrible problem, but if what makes something worthy of national news is that is an event of historic proportions, then I actually think Chicago crime gets more national media attention than it deserves, not less. Things here are bad but not historically bad.

Agreed. When I open fire on a park, I always make sure there are no kids around.

I think a lot of the attention comes from the fact that the president claims to be from there.

reality is, that is reserved for "angry white guys" in the pan handle of Idaho and remote parts of Montana. It would be too awkward for the press and sheeple to deal with the expansion of the terminology to its full meaning. But I agree with the categorization of what gang bangers are doing...

Frankly I don't care what label they put on these guys...and as far as I'm concerned they've declared war on humanity...so I'm just fine with lifetime confinement on the "Rock" or Gitmo...wanna gang bang?...cool, then face military special forces responses, with military justice. See if that sh!t doesn't calm it right down...

You're right, you don't seem to know much about this subject.

1) Foreigners? No, it's primarily black on black crime. Unless we're getting "African-Americans" from Mexico and "Salvador," your claim is complete horsesh*t.

2) In what world is Hyde Park a bad neighborhood???? There have been 2 murders in Hyde Park over the past 52 weeks. The same neighborhood that the University of Chicago, University of Chicago Lab School, 4 seminaries, 4-5 museums and a number of prominent Chicagoans call home.

3) Obummer technically lived in Kenwood, just one block from Hyde Park, where violent crime is even lower. Only one murder in the past year. The victim? Hadiya Pendleton, the girl whose name Obama disingenuously and sickeningly invoked to push his gun control agenda. I guarantee you Obummer wouldn't have cared about her, and waxed poetic about her love of "Fig Newtons and lip gloss," if she were murdered 2 blocks north, outside of Kenwood.

The problem is these gangs are not as organized as they used to be. CPD went and took down the majority of these gang leaders, and without the structural organization these young kids act crazy. Gang life in Chicago isn’t what you may think it is, there are so many of these things called "clicks" as opposed to gangs. There is a pod cast on NPR about Harper High School and it talks about this new "gang life". Its interesting and a good listen. All in all it is sad and drugs and money over ride everything!
