Castonzo is fine. He's not going to be a Pro Bowler, but he can give you enough where LT isn't an immediate need. If you can upgrade? Perfect. If you can't, no need to worry about it yet. Just gotta make sure that you plan for it eventually, because once those guys start slipping they become huge liabilities.

We'll have to disagree. I've seen him get beat too much. If I could get a Pro Bowler or draft one who has potential to be a PB, I'd get them in a heartbeat and bounce AC to RT.

I'm pretty sure we're saying the same thing.

Great shot of McGlinchey hugging Kelly at the end of the game.

He was interviewed post game by Tappen and had high praise for Kelly.

Mike also noted, "We have a tough game next week against North Carolina State to prepare for."

I'm hijacking the McG posts from ASB's hijacked thread.

Good stuff here and have been thinking about the similarities of McG's and Eich's career path. Only dif is we're expecting Liam to jump into the fire at LT instead of RT like McG did and there's not an All American to learn from and develop in his shadow.

Probably wrongish thread, but he won’t have the same level of protection with McG and Nelson gone.

Eichenberg might be better than McGlinchey in pass protection.

This is madness! McG is pretty damn good... Not as good as Martin, but slightly better than Stanley. He's had a couple of bad beats, this year, but his overall body of work is impressive.

I guess we'll see how Eichenberg measures up, but I expect a huge dropoff, no matter who steps into the LT position. It's not just the individual, but the cohesion that McG and Nelson play with will take at least a year to build up.

Madness? This isn't like he said Golson was a better QB than Huarte. You never know until you see them step on the field. IMO, I would grade Stanley higher than Big Mike. Not by a lot, but higher never the less.

I dont think McG is a LT in the NFL. He could play guard or RT IMO, def not LT. He has struggled with speed rushes consistently.

Don't want to high Jack the thread but agreed I don't see Mike as a LT either. But good ability to run block will still make him a very hot commodity to NFL GM's and coaches

I think he can be an okay NFL LT that has some bad games against the really quick guys, or he could be a great RT. A great RT is still worthy of a high pick.

This. If you can't handle the speed rush in college you'll be eaten alive as an NFL left tackle. Big Mike has RT written all over him. Ronnie Stanley was a prototypical NFL left tackle.

Point about McG was he is heads and shoulders above Eichenberg right now. Hopefully in a few years Eichenberg is considered a first round pick.

As impressive as QN has been, this stat is ultra impressive. Big Mike had a running grade 6 points higher than his closest competitor. Talk about blowing away the competition.

I think he should move to RT in the NFL. Seems like a more natural position for him there

Doubt he goes top 10. Top 20 more likely.

Big Mike going to participate in senior bowl?

So are you saying an OT won't go Top 10 or it won't be McG? If the latter, is that because he projects as a RT or that you don't think he will be valued as the top OT?

It’s the latter. From what I have heard and read the big tackle from Texas is the top rated tackle. But a lot can change from now till April.

I have 2 issues with Mike. First is he has multiple mental lapses that cause him to have numerous false starts the past two years. Second is he had a real hard time with the speed rush. I don’t know if that’s because of his sizes and he can’t kick step and get into position fast enough or what. Saying all that I love the kid and think he is an all pro RT.

His ability versus speed rush isn’t as bad as looks. Teams did it ad nauseam versus ND because Wimbush had no footwork whatsoever. A simple step up and the DE goes flying out of the play.

And the same thing happened last year because Kizer had no footwork whatsoever either?

Two 2018 NFL Draft Top 10 OL for ND?

Nice post. I think we have a tendency to be harshly critical of McG. PFF is an extremely credible source and feel he is the #1 OT. Most years OTs go in Top 10, half the time 2 OTs go in Top 10, some years even 3.

Obviously depends on team needs.

Anyway, thanks for posting. Post more.

PFF isn't saying he is the best tackle prospect only that he graded out the best.

This is gold.
So you are from Boston, do you know Mark Wahlberg? I've been trying to work out if he is a Notre Dame fan. Apparently he is a rabid catholic so I am going to guess he is. If you see him around say hi.

He was charged with three sacks allowed prior to this year in his career.

The way some fans talk, you’d think Mike had five false starts a game and played with cinder blocks on his feet. Guy was a beast for us.
