It would be the ultimate luxury to have all five OL perform at the same level. If we can truly run right or left with equal effectiveness, look out.

Hope Elmer has a fantastic season, as we need to put as many of these guys in the league as we can, and continue building HH's legacy.

The statements about Big Steve's blocking have trended towards:

1]. If it's run blocking he's our strongest mauler and will move people every time;

2]. If it's pass blocking then if he can get the guy in front of him it's lights-out [exactly the same as McGlinchey], but he has to work on his footwork to get that done all the time. Coach however said that he HAS gotten better already at that. Given that we jerked him around from tackle to guard and back and back, perhaps the board wisecrackers could cut him some slack.

He's going to do just fine IMO.

Stanley and Elmer together on the left side should be a very strong part of this offense. It will be nice if they can produce the holes the running game will need and know that they can be run behind even when the D knows it's coming. Throw Luatua in as he comes in motion and there could be some chunk yardage plays made. I too like this a lot.

Elmer is at RG between Martin and McGlinchey. Nelson/Bars at LG.

Hoping for big things from Elmer this season, he's the only ND recruit i've ever seen play high school ball in person :)

I played on the same team as John Sullivan and saw Conor Hanratty play.

Back to Steve. I think after four years at Notre Dame he will have a chance at being the number 1 guard off the board in the draft.

Uh I'll be happy when he stops whiffing on blocks every other play. Lsu game was a good starting point, baby steps.

Whiffing on blocks...That was his freshman year and early part of 2014. He was real solid the second half of last year. Kid will be a rock this year.

The Big Man will be a giant for us this year. Amazing on how criticizers blow off the jerking around different position to different position that he had to try to adjust to. The last two thirds of last season were the only times that we saw a Steve Elmer settled in, and the staff began constant praise --- but of course armchair critics know better.

And as an aside, we may have just gotten a commitment for Steve Elmer Mark II in Parker B.

The young man learns from "big brother" and steps right in.

Agree on two points :

1. Parker probably will step in for Steve after two, and by then there may not be a lot of drop off!

And, B) Steve didn't whiff a lot last year. The biggest whiffer we had at right guard was Christian Lombard, and I would take his play. Both guys moved positions too much, and particularly once Steve got settled in, he was a solid. Perhaps you mean that he had a hard time picking who he should block, or it took him a while to develop a knack for dropping off of his first level block, and addressing the second level?

Don't forget, Elmer played as a Freshman so he's gone after '16. There's no way PArker is going to take Steve's spot with Montelus, McGovern, Byrnes, Bivens, Mustipher (if he goes back to guard if Hoge can beat him out)... not to mention Ruhland and his own classmates Kraemer and Eichenberg are healthy and still on roster. I hope he doesn't start a game until '19.

And that's not a bad thing.

Heard Elmer was the latest knee casualty. Can anybody confirm if he did get hurt and how minor or serious it is? Thanks.

You know how it goes...friend of a friend of a friend. Not sure how reliable so that is why I put it out here so those that have connections can confirm or deny.

If true, it's that dammed field turf everyone was raving about I tell ya! This has a "we are slow, Longo must go?!?" type thread written all over it.

I didn't worry about transfers; I'm now worried about injuries.

Well it comes in threes, and we are down two. I'll try not to panic until Lax confirms, which might be awhile, seeing he is balls deep in the Pats thread as we speak.

Jones Crawford Folston makes three. Never mind. I'll stop worrying now. Also, Bars would be a competent replacement.
