You really can't put Jaylon Smith into a certain position. He can do it all. On the 4th down play where we won the game, he was playing corner. Jaylon was all over the field, and that pick was one of the biggest plays of the game. He has been getting better every week.

That int was crazy, i was already preparing to scream because i could see it was going to be completed. Nope JS with some insane closing speed.

Every week he shows improvement. Not a little. Miles of improvement. Not just the closing speed on the WR, but he did it while reading the QB. He knew where the ball was gonna go, and he got there. Not only that, he got turned around and in between the ball and the WR. Great reading of the QB, great closing speed, great instinct, great hands. As a freshman. Its a thing of beauty.

I know he isn't perfect, but I'm going to say something I have thought about since ASU...

Get ready,... This kid is a better player now than Manti was by the end of his freshman year, comparing outside to inside of course.... And he's only gonna get better.... Seeing a linebacker consistently take perfect angles, not over pursue, look good ish in coverage and actually make most tackles gives me a stiffy...

Now, if Cole and Max live up to it all.. We are in great shape...

When a kid has that kind of motor, raw talent, AND responds to coaching...All-Americans are made!

I think ILB requires a lot more awareness and thinking in our system so I'm not sure if I'm quite ready to say he's ahead of Manti, but his athleticism and size give him a MUCH higher ceiling. Add his performances of late to that ceiling, and I'm psyched to see how he develops.

Jaylon's intelligence has really helped him a lot. We remember how smart of a player Te'o was, but Jaylon's football IQ is miles ahead of where Te'o was a freshman. He's picked up the defense perfectly, and is able to make the smart choice almost 100% of the time. The INT was just a great read and a great athletic play. Watching his body language on the sideline and field shows what a great leader he already is. I could seriously see him being a captain next year with his work ethic, smarts, and demeanor.

Cole and Butler both had their moments yesterday. We should be alright.

The thing I noticed being at the game, able to see the whole stage, and all the pre-snap interaction, is how comfortable he looked at the start of play. I only saw players really direct him on a couple of plays. He knew where to line up and what to look for most of the time. He didn't get caught nearly as much, against a faster team to the edge.

Don't kid yourself. SC moved; even the linemen!

And that inter, not only did he flip his hips; his spider sense must have tingled (read the receiver) and he rotated through the play to face the ball and grab the pick. It looked as he did a complete 360 while maintaining his speed and having a receiver hanging all over him! I am not sure I have ever seen a play like that from a freshman.

I said this in February. Doubling down on this statement. He has exceeded my expectations.

I don't usually get to exited about players until after they have played a few years but after seeing him with the INT and then crash down on the RB in the backfield and demolish him... I'll admit I am a bit excited.

idk if this has any merit or not, but i'd be interested how much danny spond is doing behind the scenes during the games, in the film room, on the practice field to help with jaylon's development.

i know jaylon is simply just a special talent, but my gut tells me that spond is doing a bunch to aid in jaylon's accelerated development in all reality a pretty short amount of time

Mayock mentioned that Spond was mentoring him. Big ups to Danny.

I wonder if the number of tackles Jaylon's been racking up, and the INT are an indication that teams thought he would be a weak link on the defense because of his inexperience? He's turned into such a strength though, shutting down these offenses. He's really stepped things up, it's a good thing we've got guys like Spond that have helped his development along. It's exciting to see how he's coming along.

I remember back to the fall camp thread I believe and how everyone was projecting who would have the biggest impact amongst the true freshmen players. Well... we have a winner. Everyone knew this kid was special... but good grief, he is a dam* fine baller. Hats off to him for working his butt off and making an impact.
