Auburn was always a fave before ND was even in the picture. I think we hold onto both but won't feel comfortable until the ink is dry.

Yeah. It doesn't seem like a shock that Auburn is trying to get back in on guys like Bryant and Folston. The program has its appeal, but everyone knew their old coach wasn't long for that world. Now they've got a pretty good new one, with all the energy that can bring. They're going back around, especially to southern kids who committed to one of them Yankee schools up north.
Now it's ND's job to remind these kids what's good for them. I'm sure Kelly & co. will do just that. Bryant, at least, seems pretty solid.

Bryant to Auburn? lol. Don't make me laugh. Do you even recall Bryant's commitment? We weren't even on his list when he came to visit and he ended up comitting. Recall why? ACADEMICS. From what I remember, Bryant's dad said that the reason they chose ND was the 100% grad rate of student athlete's. Knowing that, and considering Auburn's academic reputation.....dare I say more?

Sounds like you haven't been following recruiting too long. Even the most ignorant kids that can barely read or form a sentence say "academics are important to me" whether or not they really are. Not saying they aren't imporant to Bryant, but a statement he made a month ago does nothing to reassure me today.

and there's this.

Greg Bryant @GB6for6

Rumors are Rumors im not going no where else but the University of Notre Dame thats my home for the next 3-4 years!

Why are we freaking out when he said explicitly that these were rumors, he's changed his handle to his ND number, and said he's not going anywhere?

I know we've been burn't in the past, but it seems we're being a little silly about this one.

Alex Anzalone, Deontay Greenberry, etc.... there are a bunch of guys who made similar bold proclamations and didn't end up sticking with it. Cautionary tales are why guys get anxious this time of year.

This kids feet/balance in traffic are realy nice...he seems to be able to ping around in traffic, and find a crease...boom. Most all kids going DI can outrun everyone in HS...so yea, he's fast...don't know whats been said about him by scouts, but DAMN!

BK, Martin and Alford had an in-home with Greg last night.

That is big! If flips at this point it was never meant to be. I think we are in great shape with both him and Folston. Can't wait until NSD so solid bowel movements return again.

nahh only way that would be possible is if he EE'd

Russell started on day 1 at one of the hardest positions to possibly do so without EE'ing.

Greg's biggest hurdle (same for all frosh RBs) is getting the coaches trust to pass protect. He has shown great aptitude for doing so from everything I have seen. I think he has a great chance to either start or get a ton of carries very early next year.

With how good he looked in pass pro against Jaylon in the Army AA game, I wouldn't be surprised to see him take the job. Of course, BK has always played multiple RBs so he will probably never have to be a true no.1 workhorse (Theo was the closest thing I've seen in terms of BK having a workhorse in terms of reps).

In my opinion I think he will undoubtedly be a part of the 2/3 man RB rotation right away. The question is who are the other 2? Carlisle and GAIII, Mahone and GAIII, Mahone and Carlisle?

There is a surplus of talent at RB, but there won't be many definite answers until we see how much Carlisle works at slot during the spring, IMO.

Maybe Kelly has never gone with a #1 work-horse becasue he never had a #1 work-horse. I don't know. But if a guy represents your best chance of success in all situations (3rd and short, running both inside and out, pass catcher and pass-blocker, etc.) then he will be the work-horse. Someone mentioned "trust of the coaches" above...that will be key.

I think this is a good point. Kelly loves to rotate guys in and out but when he has found a guy who is undoubtedly the best at his position and who is central to what the team is trying to do, he has left him in on every play -- I'm thinking of Harrison Smith and Manti Teo. So Bryant could be the only back to get meaningful carries if he proved to be far and away the most talented one ... but I don't think any of us thinks that will be the case, at least not right away.

I'm all for a rotation when it's about keeping keeping equally talented guys fresh. But when it starts to reveal tendancies (did anyone call Cierre Wood running wide left before it happened)? No doubt some guys are better equipped for different plays but the defense starts to pick up on that. would love to see that work horse that does it all.

I think the issue is Kelly's focus on "big chunk" plays. Isaiah Pead at UC was far and away the best back Kelly had, and should've gotten every carry IMO (I'm a UC fan after ND). However, in order to keep everyone fresh and capable of gashing tired defenses, Pead basically split carries with Jacob Ramsey. Pead was hands-down 100% better, but still the carries were pretty close if I recall correctly.

I find it hard to believe Kelly would let someone be a do-it-all workhorse. He values fresh legs and chunk plays too much. Theo will be as close to a workhorse that we see I think... But I am often wrong.

RB is the easiest position to pick up.. wouldn't surprise me in the least

Gotta disagree, pass protection schemes, going out on routes and not staying in for protection, who to pick up on blitzes, etc. Hear about those things all the time. Little things make a running back great.

Here's the ball. Run forward. lol

That's the same as telling a WR to go catch or a QB to just throw it. Need to know holes, where to run, how to get there (counter-steps, etc.), pass protection, motions, and routes. It's a much more complicated position than you'd think.

Pass protection is the most difficult part of it , but runningbacks are usually physically ready to step in and play. Also, the ability to run the ball does not change that much from High School, where it does with wide reciever and Oline and DB. Linebacker and Dline are not that complex but it is difficult to be physically developed enought to do this.

Right. The physical game of RB is probably the easiest jump to make from one level to the next, certainly on offense. The mental game is tougher, but it does depend some on how much pass protection you ask of a guy.
No matter who are top RBs are next year they're not going to be super experienced at pass blocking, so maybe the schemes get a little simpler.

Bryant can easily start from day one if he comes ready to go, no question. He is a freaking Sherman Tank.

We perpetually like to over-rate our current guys, but the honest truth is Bryant will blow away all competition if he is even 75% what is advertised. He is the real deal.

I laugh when people say things like "Nix may leave? Ok, just beef up Springmann," with a tone that implies that would work, and Springmann would crack the two deep anywhere else noteworthy.

The future is now. Guys like Bryant bring the horse-power needed to win big games. I guess what I'm really trying to say is "You don't snuggle with Max Power. You strap yourself in and feel the G's."
