One guy goes down and we are thin?

Were we talking about Utupo; because he isn't from Hawai'i. The only Hawaiin on the roster is Kona.

Does anyone know how they will split the team for this years game? Blue against gold, or offense against defense?

Last year with the defense so far ahead, they went O vs D. This year it will be interesting to see. Either way I think the same guys will play in the halves. Plenty of exposure.

Something funny is going on. Justin may be lining up at a DE position, some of the time. Just something I saw and heard.

The Staff couldn't find a spot for Utupo at linebacker apparently, and, as Diaco still seems to be in learning mode, has realized that sheer bulk isn't absolutely required in a pass-rushing specialist --- Shembo should have taught him that long ago even if we weren't paying attention to Bruce Irvin at WVU and the NFL last year. Plus Justin has that Samoan preternatural "heavy load" body structure and he has proved to have an exceptional burst on the snap. I can easily see Utupo getting snaps in the gap left by Hounshell [and maybe even if Chase wasn't hurt].

Insertion of Jarron Jones ahead of Sheldon Day in any prediction of the Notre Dame depth chart is worthy of two days ago {Palmface Sunday}. Day is an AA in the making, with, as Kelly says, by far the best ability to shed blocks of any of his DLine. The DLine of Day/ Nix/ Tuitt is the best in the country; backed by Springmann/ Schwenke/ and one of Utupo, Jones, Vanderdoes as "next men in", is the finest unit in the country --- potentially, but also largely already proven. WE ARE LOADED for 2013.

Prototypes all across the D-line

Prototypes all across the D-line

What's really nice about having Eddie V on the team is that now there are now prototypical players all over the D-line combined with a lot of flexibility.

I see EV as the prototypical 1-technique for a 4-3 look who can swing to either a 5 or 0 technique depending on what the team needs. Tuitt and Jones are prototypical 5-techniques who can swing to 3-techniques in a 4-3 look. Day is a prototypical 3-technique who can swing to a 5 technique. Nix is obviously a prototypical 0-technique.

Include the down CAT linebackers for a 4-3 and you have great prospects across the line for either look.

So now everybody else is saying that we have eight elite between down line and CAT positions, or are we still not there yet? LMAO!

I did not intend to infer Jones would be ahead of Day, just that they were playing the same position.....so I guess I can remove the palm from the face. I know what Kelly thinks of Day. I did not know Utupo was being switched and that Springmann was being moved either. Both news to me. I appreciate everyone catching me up.

Has there been any word on where the staff plans on putting him at on the Dline since he signed?

Have heard he is in better shape than when he signed. Lost over 20 pounds or so.

He will likely be another Sheldon Day who we all think could play NG, but will get most of his time at DE.

also this was a big part of his recruitment...he didn't want to play NG primarily and was told that he would be used as DE in 3/4 and move inside on 4/3

No matter what was said or understood on either side, EV will primarily be a NG a year from now. It's as if he was molded for that position. Just my opinion.

II has a series for the imcomig freshman and per his trainer Eddie has lost 15-20 pounds and is around 300 pounds.

Eddie's trainer also trained Ndamukong Suh and said they were very similar but that EV is more fundamentally sound than Suh was as a freshman....

Awesome

I hope he is more mentally fundamentally sound than Suh.

That is so awesome BTW.

Looks to me like a prototypical 1 tech. While he has the strength and minimum size to play the nose, he's not Big Lou. He's strong enough to command double teams, but would IMO be more effective as a penetrator than a 2-gapper (although I have no doubt he can do both). He does look like he'd be a more natural 2-gapper than Day (who I love but will play 3-tech in the NFL IMO).

I'm really excited to see this young man play! Whether he plays DE or NG, he will be a nightmare for opposing offenses!
