Are you honestly trying to tell me ND stopped recruiting Malin Jones before he committed to NU... in October of his junior year?

It's difficult to claim that his recruiting really got underway then.

It's one thing to have a case like Odenigbo, a stud whom Notre Dame really wanted and was fervidly recruiting, and another thing for a kid to have an offer but commit "...in October of his Junior year."

I've read this entire thread, and yes, according to lost of your speculating posters, Alviti had a negative response to Gunner committing.

I mean, I'm sure he had a negative response. Anyone would. Kids consider depth charts, but its only one factor. Every school has positives and negatives. Saying the only reason you didn't get him is because you got Kiel does not logically follow from the fact that it was a negative factor.

The fact that some people on here are so arrogant (or insecure) that they have to cry and make excuses about losing even a couple recruits is hilarious. I saw this thread and was happy to see a lot of well-wishing for NU and Alviti and posted hoping for a little friendly conversation.

The poster who said Fitz hates ND is absolutely right, btw. But it's not for no reason. It probably stems from him not being recruited by ND. More importantly, though, I think it's because he sees ND as a major rival for NU (recruiting and on the field) in his vision of where he wants to take the Northwestern program. And he's probably a little frustrated that ND continues to clobber us in recruiting despite not really being significantly more successful on the field for the last 15 years.

Seriously, Alviti may be good, but ND is the superior team at every position... including QB.

And yeah, of course the only reason you would ever lose a recruit to lowly NU is because they're scared of the competition at big bad ND. Yeesh. I come here peacefully answering a question posed by one of your posters and this is the kind of response I get. Get over yourselves.

Sorry if facts offend you. Go look at their recruiting profiles. There is a clear timeline of events in each.

For Malin Jones it was "reported" that he had an offer (as hear-say through Ty Isaac) for "awhile." This was not an actionable offer and ND never pushed for him. This is similar to guys like Leonte Carroo reporting they have an offer when they really don't. It happens. ND never pushed for him and Jones never contacted ND to try to commit. So it's a completely moot point.

For Alviti, you will notice he set an announcement date and the very day after Gunner commits to end he completely cancels his announcement plans and goes to not havign a timetable commit. Then there are quotes saying that Gunner committing affected his view on things. How wouldn't it? There is a HUGE difference between being the only QB taken in 2 years or being one of two QBs with the other QB being the #1 prospect in the country and an EE who will have a big leg up on you before you step on campus. Kids want to play, not ride the pine.

So you have no reason to get bent out of shape. It's very unbecoming and shows a complete ignorance to how the recruiting of those two players went. Do some research before posting or go away.

This is hilarious. How does it not follow? We get Kiel, Alviti postpones commitment, we take our 1 QB for the 2013 cycle, Alviti goes elsewhere.

When we get kids from California that are USC leftovers because they filled up... you don't see us going to their boards and saying "we beat you for a recruit!!!" We recognize that it was a leftover and we lucked out.

This is such a joke. You're talking about two recruits, Alviti and Jones, that were never lost. There was a "reported" offer to Jones, who was committed to Northwestern early, and then never ever pushed for by our staff. Period. It didn't happen. Ask any insider about RBs last cycle our staff actively recruited. Jones was not one of them.

You say not significantly more successful, I say Northwestern has never been to a BCS game whereas ND went to 3 in 5 years between 2002-2006. 3 BCS bowls in the past decade is still lightyears ahead of anything Northwestern has accomplished.

It seems odd to me that there is anything more than "committed to Northwestern. Good Luck." in this thread. That should be the last post. All of the rest of this is nonsense. We took the QB we wanted. Northwestern got a pretty good one from their own backyard. I don't really see it as a program-changing situation.

I wish Northwestern would get more good players. They're harmless as a program. Its a good school. Whats not to like about this kid going there? Its annoying seeing this thread up at the top of the front page for two days. Its irrelevant.

You're so unbelievable. Recruiting 101 is that there is a BIG difference between a commitable offer and a reported offer. I could "report" an offer from ND right now despite having no collegiate eligibility left.

There are so many examples every year of this. Ken Ekanem had an "offer" to ND and then we told him no thanks. Leonte Carroo reported an "offer" and then months later backed off it. Jones WAS NEVER ACTIVELY RECRUITED TO ND. The end. Alviti was, but after the Kiel commitment and Zaire commitment we were no longer an option for him either. So when you come on our board trying to say you "beat us" for two recruits where ND was not an option for them.... it's pathetic.

Stick to women's lacrosse.

You say excuses, I say correcting someone who said:

"Yes, I realize Alviti wasn't going to go ND after Zaire committed, but I really think we would have gotten him either way. ND is obviously still going to beat NU for recruits more often than not, but it seems to be getting more competitive."

1. You would not have gotten Alviti if Gunner didn't commit.

2. It's not getting more competitive as you have only gotten one recruit (Odenigbo) who ever had ND as an option to choose.

But keep living in your little bubble where we desperately wanted Malin Jones and didn't have the inside track on Alviti until we got Gunner Kiel to be an EE. Because there is clearly nothing anyone here can say to change your mind on those two things.

Actually, given the timeline thing you posted I'm somewhat convinced about Alviti, still not totally convinced about Malin, but whatever. You could certainly be right, and you'll notice I quickly stopped arguing about that point. Like I said, the point was that you guys were so quick to jump on what was really a very non-inflammatory, friendly post (actually, mostly just you, Lax. Most of these other guys actually seem alright)

When I first read this thread and posted, I honestly thought you seemed like a nice group who were going to break down the stereotypes I had in my mind about ND fans... instead you reinforced them. See you gents in 2014.
