From the knowledgeable poster on II:

Jones is certainly not out, and we're not done recruiting DL. I guess I can't say it enough (sorry to annoy!) -- please let things play out here.

Last note on Schutt for me: the staff had Day and Jones, plus a couple others, higher on their priority board than Tommy. They may be right, they may be wrong -- but they scouted and evaluated extensively and that was their conclusion on guys for them and our schemes, especially juxtaposed against our numbers and needs in this class. We'll see how things work out in the end...

Separate Response

That really would be misguided and very unfortunate given that we just landed Day (one of our and the nation's top swing DE/DT prospects); probably fairly lead for Jones; remain in the hunt for Armstead, possibly Kirven, possibly Washington, possibly the Watkins, and maybe even a couple others more off the radar right now (national guys) -- and may only be able to take 2 DL total depending on the numbers and stuff.

Recruiting is a tough game where decisions have to be made. This staff isn't afraid to make tough decisions and fight for what they believe in. We'll see what happens.

There has been a lot of speculation about how this whole thing with Day and Schutt went down.

Looking back at the posts in earlier July, a poster over at DD (da coach) reported that he had verballed to ND which was shortly after his visit. As others have stated on here, da coach has a pretty good track record of info, especially with recruits in Indy.

Here's my speculation....
I think it's just as likely that Day was a silent commit shortly after his visit. However, the ND staff made a smart decision to continue recruiting Schutt as a backup plan. With Schutt planning his visit, the ND staff probably had a pretty strong feeling that he was going to commit. They probably told Day that you either announce your commitment or you risk losing your spot. We may or may not have had Day rated higher, but we gave him an opportunity to grab the spot because he gave a silent back in July.

Of course this speculation is just as likely to be totally wrong, but it's another theory to consider.

Finally back on line after getting back to Michigan and IE refusing to recognize the different computer. Seems like I missed a lot.

On topic sort of: my take on this is
a]. sorry for the young man;
b]. understandable scenario of how this would happen;[given a very tight scholarship numbers to available talent pool situation];
c]. deduction #1: we are operating with fewer scholarships than many of our posters would like to believe. Maybe the 18 number is correct. My former count said 20;
d]. deduction #2: Staff Kelly are confident that they are exactly where they want to be vis-a-vis defensive line [i.e. with what they have plus how they believe they sit with next verbals.] This astonishing development with Schutt should be viewed as great news for us, even though terrible for him, as we are apparently going to be very elite in the D-line again as far as our own system are concerned;
e]. deduction#3: this COULD mean that Diaco is quite high on what either Kona or Tony or both can do at NT; it also might mean that more 4-3 sets are coming;
f]. a random thought of perhaps zero merit: "Romeo, Romeo, whereforth wilt thou play Oh Romeo??" We have an "underage" player coming with the 2012 group who is a strength freak already...who is to guess what he grows in to??

Diaco/Kelly seem to be rolling the dice on EXPECTED major talent hauls to come, and feel that with current player flexibility and a young "monster" on the horizon, they can afford to do it with even a superb talent like Schutt.

Very good point that I don't think has been brought up.

ESPN is reporting that Michigan gained a commitment from 3* DL Ondre Pipkins. You would think Schutt was rated higher than this kid.

If Schutt went to PSU, would that help us with Jones and Spence?

One thing is for certain..., it won't hurt us that is for sure. I don't think we'll get Spence but I think we will end up with Jones..., or at least I hope we get him. I really wish the best for Schutt. It's a shame we had to turn him away, but I guess I understand some of the logic behind it. This kid will be a terror when it all said and done.

If a supposed great NG/DT talent like Schutt decided to go to PSU (or any school, for that matter), I don't know why other great defensive linemen would be less inclined to go there. Blue chip players usually want to play with other blue chip players. And these 3 in particular (Schutt, Jones, and Spence) aren't necessarily the same types of players and wouldn't be competing for the same job with one another.

Are you trying to make me cry?

No, not at all. In the Michigan Recruiting thread I posted UM's newest DL's (Pipkin) rankings along with Schutt's. Like with Day (Rivals compares Pipkin and Day as Similar Defensive Tackles) Schutt has clearly the better pay service rankings. Yet coaches at both ND and UM have in essence said, "We'll take the lower ranked kid".

I suppose I could spin it that Kelly and Hoke are just used to working with the lower ranked guys but I don't see that either.

Since it's been reported that PSU, Iowa and others stepped up their contact with him it doesn't seem like it's an academic issue nor a character issue like appearing on Chris Hansen's show. There's been no negative reports surface on Schutt at all, so it seems to me that both Kelly and Hoke took other prospects that they both think will fit their needs better.

Speaking of PSU...

Dennis Dodd via Twitter:

JoePa bowled over at practice. Reportedly suffers injuries to shoulders and pelvic area. We should be more worried about the kid that ran into him.

Interestingly enough, Day took his #9 DT spot as he dropped to #11 and also tumbled from #51 overall to #94 in the updated 247 rankings.

Defensive Line MVP performance at The Opening showing he belongs as a top 10 guy even if he doesn't have the greatest "upside."

Glad this thread got bumped again. I was thinking about Schutt-gate earlier today, and it occurred to me that we only ever have one pure DT on the field at any given time. Even in our 4-front looks, the other "DT" is a SDE with the Cat OLB next to him.

In 2012, we'll have Cwynar, Nix, Stockton, Springmann (and maybe Hafis) at DT. Turning down Schutt totally makes sense in that light.

SDE and WDE don't look as good, at least from a numbers standpoint. SDE will be Tuitt > Day/ Schwenke/ (Jones?), and WDE will be KLM > Lynch> (Spence?) That's where we need numbers and talent; not DT.

Good for him. Maybe this will draw some of the sting from losing Ishaq and Mahone (!)
