He kind of screwed himself in the move, imo. I think anyone who was familiar with how Fisher operates would have seen that he was going to take a lot of pressure off Golson's shoulders by reducing his contributions to the offense. As a result, 6 weeks into the season Golson had far fewer turnovers compared to 6 weeks into 2014, yet he wasn't sniffing the Heisman race this time because his other numbers were down too. Dalvin Cook was in the Heisman race though, because he was the guy the offense really ran through.
As complicated as Kelly's offense can be, it puts a lot on the QBs shoulders. There's a risk/reward for the QB that runs it. I'm glad he moved on because Zaire and Kizer needed the snaps, but there was a good chance Golson would have been running at least some of the offense in 2015 if he had stuck around, if not winning the job again outright. I think he would have had a better chance at a combine invite if he hadn't made the move.
Everything you say is true.
In these times one part keeps going through my head.
So, I have nothing for or against Golson. I agree he did some good things at ND which should be remembered first.
But I think the Golson saga is generally indicative of what is going on within the Irish football program. You basically said it in your post : Golson was the all around best QB the Irish have had under Kelly. (Tommy was good too, but he couldn't do enough with his feet or his arm to supplant Everett for this distinction.)
So you take the best you have had to date, and eliminate him, or let him eliminate himself, however you look at it; and what happens? You don't have one, but two quarterbacks that rode the bench, on the depth chart behind him, that outperformed him (on his best day.)
The same was true for running back this past season. When is the last time ND had that productivity at the position. Sure Autry Denson had a hand in it. But CJ and Josh are freaks! (In a good way, of course!)
And when people lamented the loss of Zack Martin at left tackle. The overall performance of the line didn't take a step backward, ND just reloaded with another first round draft choice, and has what looks like a third, ready to take over this season. It will be interesting to see, not only the starting five, but how the performance compares to last years line. I bet they are better yet at run blocking!
And so it goes!
