Arena and Canadian League players need representation too.

He's gonna play somewhere if he chooses... if he doesn't make a practice squad.

Best of luck to you EG!

"Kid", "young man", whatever. You call him what you want. I'm just not going to wish ill will on him or forget the good things he did at ND b/c his career didn't end the way we all hoped. He made some poor decisions, showed a lot of the "me" mentality, that's really what I meant w/ "kid".

He kind of screwed himself in the move, imo. I think anyone who was familiar with how Fisher operates would have seen that he was going to take a lot of pressure off Golson's shoulders by reducing his contributions to the offense. As a result, 6 weeks into the season Golson had far fewer turnovers compared to 6 weeks into 2014, yet he wasn't sniffing the Heisman race this time because his other numbers were down too. Dalvin Cook was in the Heisman race though, because he was the guy the offense really ran through.

As complicated as Kelly's offense can be, it puts a lot on the QBs shoulders. There's a risk/reward for the QB that runs it. I'm glad he moved on because Zaire and Kizer needed the snaps, but there was a good chance Golson would have been running at least some of the offense in 2015 if he had stuck around, if not winning the job again outright. I think he would have had a better chance at a combine invite if he hadn't made the move.

Everything you say is true.

In these times one part keeps going through my head.

So, I have nothing for or against Golson. I agree he did some good things at ND which should be remembered first.

But I think the Golson saga is generally indicative of what is going on within the Irish football program. You basically said it in your post : Golson was the all around best QB the Irish have had under Kelly. (Tommy was good too, but he couldn't do enough with his feet or his arm to supplant Everett for this distinction.)

So you take the best you have had to date, and eliminate him, or let him eliminate himself, however you look at it; and what happens? You don't have one, but two quarterbacks that rode the bench, on the depth chart behind him, that outperformed him (on his best day.)

The same was true for running back this past season. When is the last time ND had that productivity at the position. Sure Autry Denson had a hand in it. But CJ and Josh are freaks! (In a good way, of course!)

And when people lamented the loss of Zack Martin at left tackle. The overall performance of the line didn't take a step backward, ND just reloaded with another first round draft choice, and has what looks like a third, ready to take over this season. It will be interesting to see, not only the starting five, but how the performance compares to last years line. I bet they are better yet at run blocking!

And so it goes!

Unless his numbers were outlandish, he's never going to much of a shot at QB in the NFL. He will get a chance as an UFA, but his history of fumbles and INT's will already be in the back of the mind of the pro team that brings him in. He also had a lot of tipped passes while at ND and the linemen in the NFL are even bigger. He was also replaced as the starter last season which won't help his cause. He'll be fighting two things to make a roster, his history and his size.

He should go into the draft with an open mind and be willing to play a role similar to a Randle El. Otherwise he doesn't have much of a shot at strictly QB.

I don't think he's fast enough or big enough to play a role like that. He needs to try and impress some team with his cannon of an arm and hope that they want to give him a shot on the practice squad to get an extended look. Some of the quarterbacks that the Bengals have had third on the depth chart or as their #1 on the practice squad make it seem very plausible that Golson could at least manage that, and maybe luck into a limited opportunity with an injury in front of him.

The problem is that everyone knows he's a deer in the headlights at times, and that he's a turnover machine. His only redeeming qualities as a QB right now are his arm strength and his mobility in the pocket. So he's going to need a QB-cenctric GM to say "I want to bring him in for those two good qualities and try and improve the rest." It's a long-shot, but I honestly think it's better than trying a move to WR right away.

His best bet might be to do what Zach Callaros from UC is doing... head to Canada and try to ball out in a wide-open offense up North.

Chase Daniel is still around in the league. I think EG has a chance as a backup if Chase does. Just has to keep his head on straight and take what he gets.

Daniel has smarts, is a team player and no illusions of grandeur. Not sure EG ticks any of those boxes

I was thinking about position change, but not sure he has the right skill set. EG doesn't have the speed, quickness and elusive moves that Randle El possessed.

Good luck to him, wherever he may end up....like Tommy, he did some really great things in his time in South Bend, and.....some not so great things.

Doesn't matter much either way, although it would be unusual. He has a good arm though. I assume Brown/Fuller will be running routes? Might make them look better...

Kind of funny to compare/contrast KVR's comeback to Golson's. What if Golson hadn't lied to the coaches about coming back for a 5th year and simply gone pro after his senior year? The narrative would be so much different...

"Oh well he knew he was going to get beaten out, at least he came back and gave it a shot..." instead of "traitor lied about coming back for a 5th year, stole reps in spring ball, abandoned his teammates, and transferred to a football factory..."

I think in the long run where Golson will be burned the worst is that the incredibly strong alumni network for football players might not have his back as much as it did for someone like, say, Dayne Crist who also finished out his eligibility elsewhere. Is that fair? The perception of how each of them left just seems so different...

If you allow him to do it, it reinforces the fact that once you get your ND degree, you're Irish for life. That's a good look for the program.

Haha could you imagine Fuller running a go-route with Rees throwing it out there? He'd have time to stop and drink a gatorade waiting for the ball.

(I'm a huge fan of Tommy and what he did for the team on the field. I also realize that they played together in '13.)
