I'm confident in this offense's potential with Zaire taking snaps, but Kizer is no Cardale.

I think Kizer has a lot on his mind right now, so I don't blame him for a poor showing in the Spring Game. I think Kelly learned from his mistake in 2010 when he didn't have a backup QB properly prepared. Kizer will be a decent #2 come fall I think, or Wimbush will step up to the challenge.

Fair point, and there may be something to that. God knows if it were me, it would absolutely affect me in other aspects of life. That said, all things considered, I actually kind of expect Wimbush to be the primary benefactor here (other than Zaire of course, but he was already gonna get game day snaps). Wimbush may not get game day snaps, but he WILL get #3 attention (from Sanford and BK) at a minimum vs scout team attention. Likely means quicker development which, if all works out, means a year better come time to take over the reigns in 2017.

This is a big blow to this team. Don't forget who led us on the final drive of the LSU game.

1. MZ better be ready to ball out.
2. Kizer better be ready to step in when needed.
3. Our OL better be ready to blow people off the ball all season long. We can't afford to have a bad game.
4. EG will do very well in a simplified offense so don't be surprised when we begin lamenting our loss and inability to get maximal production from him.

This is possibly the biggest loss we could've had, but I hope fate doesn't attempt to prove me wrong.

Can EG transfer to Clemson? I know ND isn't technically in the ACC for football but were there any rules that were put in place to govern the relationship in football vs the obvious ones that are in place for all other sports?

Neither seemed to ever feel at home at ND.
Stop it. Just...stop. One will have ND an undergrad diploma in hand. The other, a cancer. EG made some bad choices, but it's completely unfair to lump him in the same category as Lynch.
Fine... then lump him in with Ishaq if you would rather. My point is that some kids feel at home at ND and some dont. The ones that dont always seem to lead to drama.

This is a very dark day IMO. I've always thought he gave us a better chance of winning than Zaire. I thought the combo with Golson starting was the answer. Now we have a run first QB who is one hit away from "Kiser time". Can't blame him a bit...think the staff blew it...big time. I don't give a fvck where he goes...I follow ND football.

I was looking forward to a Golson-Zaire combo in 2015, but I'm not pessimistic regarding a 2015 season without Golson.

Golson was an exciting quarterback, but he could never get over the hump at Notre Dame. He seemed to never fully grasp what Brian Kelly wanted out of him in regards to reading the defense. His athleticism and lack of competition won him the starting job in 2012, but our 12-1 season was more the result of opportune defense than Golson's leadership. Rees rescued him a couple of times during that season, as well. Golson's 2013 season was a washout due to his own academic issues. And in 2014, he quarterbacked us to a 7-5 season with several of the losses a direct result of his turnovers. The bowl win against LSU should rightfully be credited to Zaire.

With Golson it has always been about his potential to be great. The first half of the 2014 season, he seemed to be finally producing up to everyone's expectations and then the bottom fell out with turnover after turnover. A return of Golson in 2015 would have left us once again hoping for him to finally put things together over a full season. Even he realized that he had not shown enough to-date to earn a spot in the NFL draft. His stock with NFL scouts dropped dramatically as the 2014 season wore on.

Perhaps, Golson will find the right spot where he can showcase his skills minus the fumbles and interceptions. He is an exciting player when he is not turning the ball over. As for myself, I was ready to move on to Zaire well before Brian Kelly opened up the quarterback competition prior to last year's bowl game. Zaire hasn't proven he is capable of leading the team over the course of a full season, but if we are going to rely upon a quarterback's potential I would rather place my hope in Zaire. I waited through 3 seasons for Golson to live up to his potential. It just never happened on a consistent, season long basis. I'm ready to support Zaire as the quarterback of the future. And I'm ready to wish Everett Golson the best wherever he ends up. Hopefully, he can put together a full season of consistent leadership. Even in his worst moments on the field, Everett never gave up the fight.

Nice. Good for him. Good luck EG.

No problem with that and 100% confident with Zaire. Not a fan of a 2 QB system either.

T Town's take:

It is never good when you lose a QB with the type of experience that EG had. Yes he had some ball security issues. But now the Irish are left with a QB that's really only played two games total(?). While I think MZ can get the job done, my concern is that if he runs the ball a lot, he better know how to slide off tackles and big hits. If MZ goes down, the backup situation looks pretty thin.

I hope EG lands in a good spot somewhere and can finish his college career on a high note. He seems like a really good kid. Good luck EG. And good luck to MZ. Ball out.

I'm not much of a fan either but I think it could have worked here b/c their skill sets are so different yet both could work within BK's system. Opposing D coordinators would have had their hands full trying to prep their defense with limited practice time. It would have been an interesting chess match.

I wish him well and good luck on his new adventure on his new team.

I hope he does great.

It will only mean that MZ is that much better.

In the end, the best fit and man for the job remains.

Go Irish and thank you EG for what you did for my favorite college football team!

Here's the thing with EG when it comes to this upcoming season, when he throws the first pick or loses the first fumble, will he fold? How much will it rattle him? How many times was EG relieved during his career? Next season is the one with him at the helm. Sure, he has some experience and so did Cardale, wait..

Point being for me, experience is on the lower end of the priority pool when it comes to college football in my opinion.

Its time to move on and I wish him nothing but the best at his next stop. Now that Zaire is the official #1, perhaps he can elevate his game since he doesn't have to look over his shoulder.

To me, this is a positive for ND.

Do I understand the concept? Yeah but I still don't agree with it. Again, just my two cents. I think QB is a position where you have to name your starter early and stay on him throughout. I never liked the whole, we don't know yet. That is more of a problem to me then if BK came out and said this is definitely our guy.

We shall see but I do believe this to be a good thing...especially for the running game.

Good golly Miss Molly! I am amazed at the proliferation of Chicken Little out there.
THE SKY IS NOT FALLING!

I have been following ND football for 60+ years. This sort of thing happens all the time and always will. We adjust and move on. How is this any different than if he had sustained an injury?

I fully expected Golson to transfer since the bowl game.

It also solves part of the problem of getting down to the 85 roster limit.

Everyone, take a deep breath and relax a little.

Good Luck Golson...

I can't wait to see Malik run this offense.

Sure you rather have Golson there just in case, but as long as Malik stays healthy we just became a much better TEAM imho...

How glorious will it be to watch our running game dominate on Saturday's....

I think BK had a good idea this was coming, but he was just trying his best to convince EG otherwise with his comments this spring. Obviously we're screwed if MZ gets hurt, but if there is a continuation of the LSU gameplan and (hopefully) some improved passing, this should be a really successful season.

Sorry to quote myself but I'm sure some of our lawyers have gone over the agreement with the ACC. Clemson looks like a great place for him to go if he is allowed under the terms of the ND-ACC relationship.

I'd much rather he be at ECU or a Big 12 school. The SEC is out per their own bylaws.

It was discussed earlier in the thread, but Clemson seems highly unlikely. They have Deshaun Watson who many are predicting to be an absolute stud this season. Other than Clemson being in SC, I see no reason for him going there.

Same Page.

This is a major blow. I'm afraid that we are traveling towards the Navy spectrum in the sense of being a one trick pony. Run, Run, Run. I don't think Malik is a throwing threat. I hope i'm wrong, but I really don't see it happening. Thank God we have 3 capable running backs and lets hope the OL is eating there Wheaties

EDIT: i'm all in on running the ball with a 60/40 split ( 60-run) I just don't know how well Malik will do with the 40 part.

Per sources to Irish 247, there are two front runners. South Carolina and UGA. He'll ball out for the old ball coach.

...I would love to be angry about this, but he did everything he was asked to do...play hard, get through adversity, graduate...I can't help but be a little sad at what might have been, and all at once proud of him, and wish him well. And wish him turf toe if ND faces him...:). Always Irish to me...good luck EG.

He didn't get suspended for a year for doing everything he was asked to do. The adversity he had to overcome was self-inflicted. He paid the price and did the time. He earned his job back. Good on him for that, but it was a job he never should have lost.

Good luck to him wherever he goes. Hopefully he can make it into the NFL.

couple things:

the 2015 team would have been better WITH him than without him. this is in no way a "good thing" for our 2015 squad.

hope his next coach gets plays in with more than 8 seconds left on the play clock

will never know for sure but I feel that had kellly wanted him to be here in 2015 he would have been. I think he "lost Kelly" for good after the "debacle in the desert".

the LSU rumor in january coupled with Big Lou tweet listing them as 1 of 3 teams, I would bet he plays for LSU.

and can we stop with the "he couldn't get into the graduate program" pablum please. sometimes the hubris is simply baffling. kid 100% left because he wanted to not because he had to.

I just texted a buddy of mine that works for USC athletics and he is hearing it's a no-go at this point. He said things could change, but as of now EG is not coming back to South Carolina.

I tend to agree though - it would be a nice fit for both EG and USC.

Not sure if this was posted previously. From the NCAA website:
Can a student-athlete transfer to a graduate program at a different school to compete?

Student-athletes who have received their bachelor’s degree and have at least one remaining year of athletic eligibility are subject to the same release requirements as undergraduates. In Division I, a student-athlete with remaining athletics eligibility who enrolls in a graduate or professional program at a different school may be eligible to compete immediately if they have not previously transferred from a four-year school and their undergraduate school provides a written transfer release. Graduate students who compete in football (Football Bowl Subdivision), men’s and women’s basketball, men’s ice hockey or baseball also must show their undergraduate school did not renew their athletics scholarship. In Division II, student-athletes with remaining athletics eligibility who transfer and enroll in a graduate or other post-baccalaureate degree program at different school are immediately eligible for competition.

So it appears ND may have the right to release him only to certain schools.

My only reply to those who think this is a good thing:

With a 2 QB system, we beat the best defense in the SEC. Many observers this spring said Golson was CLEARLY the better passing QB. I hope Zaire continues to develop because we will have to rely on his arm to make plays this season. He's shown he can complete 6-10 passes and rush for nearly 100 yds. Can he complete 20+ if called upon?

One thing we can certainly be excited about: we will be running the ball at a good clip this season. We will have jumbo packages galore.

LSU plus Golson plus Fournette equals nightmare for opposing teams and possible Heisman for either, laugh if you want but I would not be surprised. In no way is this positive for ND, we would need them both at some point in the season.
