Can ND block his transfer to any particular school ( those on our upcoming schedule) or is he free to go anywhere?

He graduated, so he can go wherever he likes.

Having said that, if I am not correct, he can only play immediately if he enrolls in a graduate program which ND does not offer. Considering he will probably go to a football factory type school, I don't think that should be much of a roadblock.

My FSU fan coworkers praying he comes here so they have 1 yr of him before Henry gets here this fall.

I told them he's transferring to FAMU.

From AthleticScholarships.net:

The graduate exception is a version of the one-time transfer exception. It is for student-athletes who cannot use the normal one-time transfer exception because they play one of the sports that are not permitted to use the exception.
•The student-athlete must have graduated with at least a bachelor’s degree;
•The student-athlete meets the other requirements of the one-time transfer exception;
•The student-athlete must have at least one season of competition left; and
The student-athlete’s previous school did not renew his or her athletic scholarship or offer an athletic scholarship for the following academic year.

The requirement that the scholarship be cancelled or not renewed is generally not an issue. The scholarship does not need to be cancelled before the transfer or be the reason for the transfer. Because the one-time transfer exception requires you to get a release, what will happen with your scholarship is generally just an administrative detail.

That seems to indicate the first school can block a tranfer by refusing to release the athlete from their scholarship.

Sheesh, how has no one brought up Clemson??

Clemson has a possible superstar already. if im Ev im on phone with FSU, even shitty qbs get drafted from there. Or even Bama, barring whatever the sec issue might be. If he has true aspirations of NFL, some pro style film is his best bet.

Funny how all these fan bases who were ripping Golson to shreds when he was turning the ball over are now dying to have him.

...and that is the one positive in all of this. Golson still holds the ball like a loaf of bread. I love EG, but I am definitely not going to miss that aspect of his game at all.

Secondly, the kid is just not personable. I think we all could see EG duplicating the Russel Wilson scenario... but the one reason that will never happen is the EG just doesnt have that dynamic leadership personality. I really cant see him walking in and taking over a team as a graduate transfer.

Having said all of that, I wish him the best and will always root for him.

Now let's pound the damn ball.

He is not currently on scholly. His four years is up.

Allow me to back up then.

The graduate exception is a version of the one-time transfer exception. It is for student-athletes who cannot use the normal one-time transfer exception because they play one of the sports that are not permitted to use the exception.
•The student-athlete must have graduated with at least a bachelor’s degree;

The requirement that the scholarship be cancelled or not renewed is generally not an issue. The scholarship does not need to be cancelled before the transfer or be the reason for the transfer. Because the one-time transfer exception requires you to get a release, what will happen with your scholarship is generally just an administrative detail.

Here is the one-time transfer exception criteria:

The one-time transfer exception is the most commonly used exception for transfers from one four-year college to another, especially if the transfer involves two colleges in NCAA Division I or II.
•If transferring to a Division I school, the athlete must play a sport other than football, men’s or women’s basketball, or baseball. The exception is that an athlete can transfers to a Football Championship Subdivision (FCS or I-AA) school and use this exception provided he or she has at least two seasons of competition remaining. In Division II, any sport may use the one-time transfer exception.
•The athlete must not have previously transferred from another four-year school.
•At the time of the transfer, the athlete would have been academically eligible at the previous school; and
If transferring from an NCAA or NAIA school, the athlete’s previous school states in writing that they have no objection to the athlete using the one-time transfer exception.

While the one-time transfer exception is the most commonly used, it is technically the last resort. If a student-athlete can find another transfer exception to use, it is generally better since they have fewer requirements and sometime make the transfer not count if the student-athlete needs to transfer again.

The bit in the graduate transfer rule about the scholarship being an "administrative detail" appears to be due to the fact that the school has to give permission anyway.

Golson transferring to Texas is the only way this could go very south in a hurry. While Texas wasn't a great team last year, QB is definitely a position that contributed to a lot of their woes. That defense could shine for them next year, and Golson could do enough for them in an early game that it could make that first game a whole lot tougher for Zaire as he transitions into the role permanently.

Golson could still transfer to another school that we'll play later, like Clemson, but by then Zaire will have more game experience and I think we'd stand a better chance of matching up against the Tigers. While an upset can always occur, I think Golson would give Texas a real shot at beating us.

Right, there is no way this is a positive. We're losing an experience and electric talent that is head and shoulders better than the #3. I've always believed Zaire could get the job done but what happens if he can't.

Too soon?

Like a boss! A classy boss.

This would honestly make some sense. He has played four of the teams on their schedule and it wouldn't be a difficult transition in regards to type of offense.

Eff. The worst part (other than losing him to Mora) would be that UCLA gets the credit of putting him in the NFL if he has a halfway decent season. Bullshit.

Sheesh, how has no one brought up Clemson??

That would be like jumping out of the frying pan an into the fire in terms of QB situation.

Golson will dominate with a coach that won't get in his head too much... he seemed flustered because of Kelly at times. He's going to have a really good year somewhere else. Best of luck to him. I think Malik is the smart pick for ND and this loaded 2015 team will win 11 games at least.

How is this related? I thought they were already one over not including Ishaq? Is that not the case?

It's funny to me how many of you guys are happy about this. Wouldn't be surprised if he's better than whoever we put in this year. I hope not, but it wouldn't surprise me. Good luck to him.

From a numbers standpoint I guess you could say that Ishaaq has a better chance of getting in with Golson gone since 88 (Or whatever we're at) is more than 87, but that doesn't mean he's still able to come back from an academic standpoint or that he'll get through admissions. He has to reapply, doesn't he?

I respect the hell outta Keith, but ummmm no. Williams not coming back isn't about roster management.

Doesn't the SEC still have the graduate transfer rule where they have to have two years of eligibility left? That should eliminate any SEC talk if so.

Statistically, he more than likely WILL be better than Zaire, but as far as system fit and intangibles, Zaire won't leave much to be desired. If ND doesn't succeed, it will be the defense's fault, not the offense's.

I think a lot of us expect there will be some growing pains, but there's no guarantee Golson was going to learn how to protect the ball his last year. The only thing that's been consistent over Golson's career has been his inconsistency. One game he can look like a Heisman candidate, the next he looks like 2nd string. It's been my opinion that's he's a gamer and not a real QB. Gamers can win you games, look at Denard Robinson, but when you put too much on them they can falter and cost you games.

Short term this will certainly hurt, but long term I think this puts us in a better situation as I think Zaire will rise to the occasion and will get the experience that he needs to succeed.

If this is the case, then why wasn't this EVER brought up when all that LSU smoke started coming out right after the bowl game?

SEC bylaw 14.1.15.1

Sorry SEC teams hoping to snag him
the rule in question
"(d) The student-athlete has not been subject to official university or athletic department disciplinary action at any time during enrollment at any previous collegiate institution (ecluding limited discipline applied by a sports team)."
