That's crazy to me. If I was an ND player, I'd stay in South Bend for summers, work out with my teammates and take as many sprint/mini courses as I could get away with at IUSB so my falls would be no more than 15 hours, 12 if I could swing it. Football players have it made with only playing during one semester.

Sorry, I should have been clearer. I'm nearly certain that is what all football players do. They actually build up enough credits that some guys in the fall are only taking 6 hours or less.
I was speaking more to the University's stance on accepting credits from other institutions for all students.

Must be a full time student during season I believe, which is 12 credits. Could have changed since my day

No, minimum of 6 creditsi in a semester. They have the full year, fFall, Spring, and Summer sessions to meet the NCAA annual progress toward graduation requirement.

You know I didn't know for sure what the rule is. So, I looked it up:

"In Division I, student-athletes must complete 40 percent of the coursework required for a degree by the end of their second year. They must complete 60 percent by the end of their third year and 80 percent by the end of their fourth year. Student-athletes are allowed five years to graduate while receiving athletically related financial aid. All Division I student-athletes must earn at least six credit hours each term to be eligible for the following term and must meet minimum grade-point average requirements that are related to an institution’s own GPA standards for graduation."

So, I don't really know what to make of this. Maybe they can go as low as 6 credits? I could be confused by players who are on track to graduate in the fall might have different expectations. Honestly, I'm not really sure. Thanks for questioning me, I learned something!

This kid gonna play?

I'm glad you reminded us. We Notre Dame fans always forget all this stuff.

In seriousness, we won't know before the coaches and the coaches don't know. It's not looking good, but there's always hope.

It doesn't look good... If he does get cleared, He hasn't been practicing with the team.. Seems unrealistic he will be in game shape and shake off the rust before week 4 or 5....

lost appeal

That's a bummer. Good on him for coming back. Hope he sticks it out and graduates.

Also: Without knowing details of Ishaq's case beyond what's been reported/posted here, this would appear to be yet another example of the NCAA getting its priorities completely backward. He's served his time.

Wow, the recruiting class from 2011 has certainly turned out to be a "hard luck" group:

Ishaq Williams

Stephon Tuitt

Eilar Hardy

Troy Niklas

Aaron Lynch

Ben Councell

Davaris Daniels

Ben Koyack

Matthew Hegarty

George Atkinson III

Nick Martin

Conor Hanratty

Everett Golson

Chase Hounshell

Matthias Farley

Brad Carrico

Jarrett Grace

Cam McDaniel

Jalen Brown

Anthony Rabasa

Tony Springmann

Josh Atkinson

Kyle Brindza

Between injuries, transfers, and simply not living up to expectations; there is a whole lot more "what could have been" than "what was" in that list.

Found it, and paid double for my blind faith that something good would come out of this mess.

I didn't bet on it but i had the same blind faith that he would somehow suit up for us again. I'm excited that he is back in the class room working on that degree and hope that he get's his shot at the next level.

So long as he gets his degree, I'm happy he came to ND.

T/F - Ishaq Williams still gets drafted based on potential and workouts and makes ND fans suffer as he becomes a producer in the NFL?

Between Ishaq and Greg, Ishaq definitely had his head on his shoulders. Good luck, dude, it'll pay dividends.

per fortuna at espn

He re-enrolled at Notre Dame this summer and will continue to stay on scholarship, but he will not count toward the limit of 85 that a school can award, Kelly said.

False. No way he gets drafted after sitting out two years, and not being all that impressive in the two years he did play. He may still get an invite to camp based on potential, but no team is going to spend a draft pick on him when there are hundreds of other prospects.

It's weird to think about our 2011 DE class. Lynch, Williams, and Tuitt. Lynch left after one year. Williams only played two years. Tuitt only played for three. Man, what could have been. Oh well, onward and upward!

We had a weird stretch in recruiting there for awhile in 2011 and 2012 where we sold the farm for blue-chippers who didn't necessarily "fit." I agree you've got to stretch for kids who might not be obvious Domers, and hope they stretch, too (like, say, Louis Nix did). And a couple of them - Tuitt and especially Niklas, jumped to the NFL early.
But it's striking how few of those top-tier kids played much, and graduated. For the 2011 class - a top ten recruiting class - you're basically looking at Ben Koyack, Nick Martin, Cam McDaniel, Joe Schmidt and Matthias Farley as guys who played out their eligibilty, stayed healthy and contributed consistently. Of those, only Koyack would have been considered an elite recruit.
