A poster on ISD who has legit inside sources at ND (has been spot on with his info, and gives it before anyone else knows anything) posted that things are looking much better for Matt returning to the team down the line. Obviously anything can happen but would be huge for Matt and our team if that happens.

Good for Matt and family!

For the frequent requester's of details it won't be forthcoming from UND due to FERPA, the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act. Details on a student's academics and health are the right of the student to share not a university. UND could comment on whether a student is enrolled or a member of a team.

"Non-football injury" is all I remember hearing.

My opinion on the importance of Matt: There are very few things that our team needs to really clear up before launching a monster array of talent next season.

#1: solidify the offensive center situation;
#2: get Louis Nix and Zach Martin back;
#3: teach the TEs how to locate and block the correct opponents;
#4: encourage the vocal leadership of Lou, Bennett, and Prince on the defense [Diaco will take care of the player replacements];
#5: teach Davaris Daniels to correctly line up every play [GAIII too, would help, but he at least doesn't cause illegal formations];
#6: develop an on-field-coach safety;
#7: don't let this Rolls-Royce monster team get cocky.

Of the above things, #1 and #2 are the critical ones. Matt is the solution to #1 --- if not, we have to really hope that Mark Harrell has come a long way, technique-wise and physically. Since I believe that #2 will happen in our favor, and the coaching staff will handle all the rest, it is my hope for Matt upon which another shot at a national championship mostly rests. Matt's health and ability to stabilize the center between ZMart/ Watt/ and Lombard with either NMart or Stanley, is the Key to at least another BCS game in my crystal ball. The Crystal Ball does not quite see the Crystal Football, but there's just the hint of that there in the shadows....

C'Mon Big Boy. We need those brains and quick feet and muscles to be the foundationstone.

Matthew is recovering from a mini-stroke and heart surgery, per his father. Wow. Glad to hear he is recovering. Get well soon Matt!

Due to some calls from concerned people who have heard that our son, (Matt Hegarty) was ill, possibly very ill, we are providing this update on our son’s health. We want everyone to know that Matt is now fine on injured reserve and his prospects are very good. He is with his team in Miami and Matt wants everyone to know, “his guys are ready for Alabama”.

Matt Hegarty, Sophomore, #77 played in the first nine games of the Notre Dame season as part of special teams or as reserve center before suffering a surprise mini-stroke on 11-8-12. He fully recovered from the mini-stroke. He had a successful heart surgery on 12-14-12 to patch two holes in his heart he has had since birth which caused his stroke… and were never uncovered before. Although hard to believe, he is still expected to still come back as Notre Dame’s center next year. There is precedent for this because an NFL football player also suffered a stroke, due to a hole in his heart, had the operation and returned to his team after he recovered. Matt is finishing rehabilitation now with some new rules to follow.

An amazing item uncovered from his tests was that Matt has always suffered from oxygen deprivation, due to the holes in his heart. After the “heart patch” surgery he should have nearly 20% more oxygen in his blood. This will help him immensely in the future.

We are blessed that he is recovering so well and to have the quality of care at Notre Dame. The coaches, Matt’s friends/teammates, his trainer, doctors and Notre Dame itself, have all been great and very supportive . GO IRISH ! Bryan & Stacy Hegarty

Good Lord, that is an incredible story! Good for Matt- he's very lucky that it was caught when it was still correctable.

Boggles the mind that he performed at such a high level in high school with this condition. Wonderful news.

That is unbelievable. Thank heaven this problem was caught and corrected.

And what a great outcome. Matt will not only recover, but he'll play again. He'll not only play again, but with the increased oxygen, he'll be a better player than anyone could have expected!
