Due to some calls from concerned people who have heard that our son, (Matt Hegarty) was ill, possibly very ill, we are providing this update on our son’s health. We want everyone to know that Matt is now fine on injured reserve and his prospects are very good. He is with his team in Miami and Matt wants everyone to know, “his guys are ready for Alabama”.
Matt Hegarty, Sophomore, #77 played in the first nine games of the Notre Dame season as part of special teams or as reserve center before suffering a surprise mini-stroke on 11-8-12. He fully recovered from the mini-stroke. He had a successful heart surgery on 12-14-12 to patch two holes in his heart he has had since birth which caused his stroke… and were never uncovered before. Although hard to believe, he is still expected to still come back as Notre Dame’s center next year. There is precedent for this because an NFL football player also suffered a stroke, due to a hole in his heart, had the operation and returned to his team after he recovered. Matt is finishing rehabilitation now with some new rules to follow.
An amazing item uncovered from his tests was that Matt has always suffered from oxygen deprivation, due to the holes in his heart. After the “heart patch” surgery he should have nearly 20% more oxygen in his blood. This will help him immensely in the future.
We are blessed that he is recovering so well and to have the quality of care at Notre Dame. The coaches, Matt’s friends/teammates, his trainer, doctors and Notre Dame itself, have all been great and very supportive . GO IRISH ! Bryan & Stacy Hegarty
